Out of Office Irony (or maybe not, let the irony nazis decide)

Interesting little sequence happened today. I was chatting with a co-worker about how I felt a little out of the loop on the company 'happenings'. We're a pretty small company (25 people or so), but since I'm working off site I really have little to no communication with many of my co-workers, etc. We used to have monthly status meetings but those have dropped off in the last 8 months or so.

Anyways, I decided to email the two co-owners and let them know I was feeling a little out of the loop, since I'm likely not the only one, and to ask if they were planning a status meeting any time soon.

Immediately after hitting send I got two little Out of Office replies, each saying the recipient would be out of the office until the end of September. I had no idea they were gone, so I messaged my buddy and asked if he knew where they were.

Turns out, they are both climbing Mt Everest. I'm not kidding. So apparently I'm so out of the loop that the two guys that run the show can go and climb Everest and I don't even know. Which made my email to them about feeling out of the loop decidedly ironic.

Anyways, on the one hand I think it's really cool that they are doing something like that. On the other hand, I feel kind of hurt (in a stupid sort of way) that I didn't even know. I'm actually kind of confused by the hurt feelings, I would not have expected to feel like that at all.

All in all, I guess I just thought I'd share an experience that certainly doesn't happen to me every day. Hopefully they don't both die in an avalanche, or I guess I'm out of a job.

If you didn't tell them about your push up challenge...I call it even.

I think it is kind of weird that the two head honchos in a relatively small company are gone for at least a month, and the entire company didn't know about it.

I didn't know you were a woman.

Me neither, hence the confusion!

Everest? In September? You don't climb Everest in September. You climb Everest in May.

Well, maybe they are climbing ON Everest and not summiting.

That's not quite true, it can be climbed after the monsoons, depending on snow depth. Plus, if they are hardcore climbers, it can be climbed anytime - some months are much more challenging than others.

Don't the monsoons last from June-September, though?
Yea. I guess they could be hardcore. I assumed that they were not based on absolutely zero info.

The Fall climbing season runs from September to November. Exactly what weeks typically, I don't know.

I make voodoo dolls of my coworkers. I envy you!

Sounds kinda Brokeback Mountain-ish.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Marsha Marsha Marsha!!

What really would have sucked is if they invited all the office people to go...

The Dilbert guy could get at least a month of strips out of this story
