FWIW, I just chose Dallas, TX arbitrarily just so we could have a baseline for the cost of living differences. CNN's COL calculator seemed a little unweildy and the other ones wanted information like the cost of a meal. This is hardly scientific, but the results will be pretty interesting I think.

I did a comparisons between

Austin vs. Las Vegas - Las Vegas is 6% more expensive
Austin vs. San Diego - San Diego is 53% more expensive
Austin vs. Los Angeles - Los Angeles is 62% more expensive

Those percentages seem very very high.

Hmmm, it says I would only need to 41,000 to live in Dallas. Not knowing Dallas much other than where Kennedy was killed, just doesn't seem like it would be enough.

Kinda defeats the whole purpose of 'getting ahead' if I were to take that big of a pay cut just to live in Dallas. :D

Wait, how is LA more expensive than San Diego???? If anything they would be tied or much closer than that. Weird.

Dallas is only 11% more expensive than Greensburg, PA, and Greensburg ain't that expensive. Nice.

20% more expensive than Buffalo

13% less than Pleasant Grove, Ut where I used to live..

The thing that has changed in six months is the 37% increase from Buffalo to PG :eek:

I'm guessing real estate prices determine at least 50% of the variance among different cities. Real estate in Dallas is inexpensive compared to most large metropolitan areas (esp. SF/LA/SD). You can buy a decent home in a good suburb of Dallas (~2,500 sq ft, with good public schools) for around $275K.

Seattle is alot more expensice the Dallas

Keeping in mind this is household. If I had a employed wife I'd be throwing the curve more :).

Edit--maybe the best thing to do is convert your currency to US and vote that way. From what I hear, Australia (Groundhog, et al) and England are much more expensive than the US. Not sure about Canada. I have heard the Phillippines are much, much cheaper from the people that I know that have retired there (Neon Chaos).

Crap, I didn't read the comparison thing first. I selected 2 levels too high for my "Dallas Income"

Atlanta is 17% more expensive than Dallas with housing being 40% higher.

Dallas is 44% cheaper than Washington.
Housing is the biggest factor in the cost of living difference.
Housing is 70% cheaper in Dallas.

I didn't see the calculator before I did the poll, but Flower Mound is only 5% more expensive than Dallas, so I'm still in the proper range...

I live close to San Francisco, CA. So...needless to say there is a rediculous cost of living difference. A 2,500 sq foot anything up here would cost well over a million dollars.

Yeah, I have a cousin who lives in SF, and she came to visit a couple of weeks ago. She was stunned to find out how "cheap" my house cost...
