OOTP MP Feedback: What's Your Take On This Contract

i want to guage what people think of this contract. 16 team league, salary cap of $62million. contract is for a mid-20 year old 2B, 5 star uber stud.

miked 10-02-2008 09:47 AM

Welp, in UBL we don't allow escalation to that degree. No contract year may differ by more than 40%, and no bonuses more than 1M. It looks like a cheety contract and the league would do well to band together and vote this guy MVP to bankrupt the team.

Plus, we both know that guys who are arby eligible have no idea what their worth is.

Anthony 10-02-2008 09:50 AM

the player was asking for 5 years, $18million per.

miked 10-02-2008 10:05 AM

Still very silly, especially with that bonus, Interestingly, I believe OOTP counts projected bonuses against the cap. So apparently he's using 1/2 his cap in the early seasons, and 70% of it in the later seasons.

i'm hoping the Gods of OOTP make this player a 5-time MVP.

even overlooking the mvp bonus (which is ludicrous), i'd be interested in seeing how the team can compete when 35% of their budget is invested in 1 player. espeically when you consider how easy it is for a young player in their mid-20s to experience unexpected ratings drops.

The bonus is uber-ignorant. Obviously some sort of exploit.

If I were in the league, I'd be all for some fool giving a player this contract. One less team to worry about.

i guess that's where the consequences come in, someone explained even if he released the guy in like Year 7, it'd be a huge hit to his finances so it'd prevent him from releasing additional players in the event he wanted to sign other guys in FA. so i guess i'm ok with that. no one else in the league seems to mind so far be it for me to cry about it. just wanted to make sure i wasn't being dramatic here.

I think you have to determine the value of a win in your league and then determine how many wins this guy is going to give you in a season. Then determine if his value is anywhere near what his contract is.

I have a hard time believing the guy is going to put up the type of numbers required to be worth a third of your cap on the back end of the deal.

In the short term, it might be a good deal as long as the bonuses don't kick in.

Barkeep49 10-02-2008 01:04 PM

I would be worried about this contract, because when it becomes clear how hamstrung the team is that they will lose this owner and make it very hard for the new owner to rebuild the team.

Maple Leafs 10-02-2008 01:08 PM

Do you have any sort of rule to prevent the owner from benching the guy in September if he's having an MVP year?

Anthony 10-02-2008 01:22 PM

the league i'm in is FOOL. we sim a season every week. it's a very weird and different league, but the benefit is compiling stats very quickly and progressing through the years at a very brisk pace. so the season is simmed on a Friday nite, no way to pull funny business like that.

funny thing about that - even if this wasn't a fast league, you'd be hurting yourself more than helping if you sat a guy out cuz you're paying him a king's ransom to play on your team. talk about chopping your arm off to spite your hand. lol

the good thing about this is the back-end of his deal is, in real time terms, like a month and a half away so the consequences will come very quickly. i don't want to start throwing names around and creating unnecessary negative publicity cuz it's a good league and i love the fast pace, but the person who offered this contract isn't likely to step down due to being the person who runs the sims. great guy and is very excited about his team so i don't think he's the type to just leave the bad contract to a new owner.

my stance on this is i don't have a problem if these contracts happen if it's allowed, cuz i'll simply offer similar contracts to compete. its like when you go to a friend's house and you need to go urinate and there's a long line for the bathroom but then you see everyone pissing on his lawn. you didn't think it was proper to piss on a guy's lawn without consequences but the ole "when in Rome" comes into play.

or, put another way, to use a sample from a Beastie Boys song (Freak Reak):

"if it's gonna be that kinda party - i'm gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes".

Commo_Soldier 10-02-2008 05:26 PM

One thing that should be corrected is the cap is actually 65 million, but every team has almost 30 - 65 million each they make over the cap. So cutting him for poor performance would not be an issue and paying the bonus would not be an issue either. Additionally we have done some tests that seem to indicate bonus have little importance to a player.

Anthony 10-02-2008 08:34 PM

so lets not play with financials then, if its gonna be such a farce.

apparently i can sign players to a 22 kagillion deal and there'll be no ramifications. lol
