POLL: Which Big 12 QB would you Draft?
If you were an NFL GM and you needed a QB, which QB in the B12 would give you the biggest chance of success?
For me, I'd pick Chase Daniel. Kid is going to be Drew Brees 2.0. Makes all the throws, has good mobility and is a fearless player. Josh Freeman would get some consideration as well. He calls his own audibles, makes reads at the line and he has a big arm and good mobility. Colt McCoy is from that country club in Texas. I am not sold on Texas players that go in the top 10 because none of them seem ready for the NFL life. McCoy could be different, but I have my doubts. Graham Harrell is a darkhorse. Love he can make so many throws, but I don't know how to project him from that offense he runs, and lets be honest, having Crabtree makes things a lot easier. Sam Bradford I wouldn't touch until the fifth round. Great accuracy, but I don't trust anyone who's played in that offense. He could fit in well in a West Coast Offense, but those are becoming extinct. Zac Robinson is another guy who has some skills but I am not sold on. Ditto for Todd Reesing. He's a great college QB, but that's the extent of it. Poll to come. |
VERY good poll.. and VERY tough choice here.
I love Chase D, but if I were being honest here, I'd draft Sam Bradford of Oklahoma. Josh Freeman? Please.. he doesn't do much for me at all.. kills me they were gushing over him last night and time after time he made horrible throws... and if he runs like that in the pros, he won't be around very long. Graham Harrell is definitely the dark horse, but he's probably my #2. |
I'm torn between Harrell and Daniel, I don't think I'd take either until mid-2nd round unless they have an impressive combine.
|
People are voting for an Oklahoma QB? I have seen him play once, and he looked good. I still can't get over him playing for Oklahoma though.
|
I voted for McCoy. I don't what exactly it is, but he just seems to have winner written all over him. Call it a hunch.
|
As a Mizzou fan I really hope Chase follows the Drew Brees model. Wouldn't ending up in New Orleans as Brees' backup be a win-win for the Saints and Daniel?
Further complicating the question is when are you drafting these guys? Daniel and Harrell are the only seniors. You want to like Harrell but the flameout of every Tech QB before him hurts. Chase benefits from being the first in the spread line at Mizzou -- Brad Smith didn't run the same offense Daniel is. NFL scouts supposedly love Josh Freeman for his size and skills. From watching him in person last night, I love the way Freeman moves and looks -- until the ball gets where it's going. He can't judge touch and makes poor decisions. Maybe his senior year will be different. Bradford and McCoy should be quality prospects but Bradford is a sophomore -- if he comes out this year, he's a project. McCoy probably has the the best pro prospects right now. Robinson is a nice college QB but I don't see NFL stud right now. Reesing has no chance. He has Daniel's physical skills without the resume. But what about the senior Big 12 QB not listed recently on the cover of ESPN Magazine? Matt Cassell anyone? :) ![]() |
Bradford seems like he's on a different level than the other guys. McCoy looks pretty good, too, but he seems like a massive injury risk in the NFL.
|
The ESPN guys (Todd McShay and Kiper, I think) have Bradford as the top QB pick if he decides to come out. While I think he has all the tools to be an NFL QB (strong arm, great size, good footwork, very smart), he's still young. Obviously being an OU fan, I hope he comes back for at least one more year, if not two. I believe he will, though if the projections are accurate, it will be a tough decision, particularly in a year that most believe the senior QB class is very weak. He can still improve in some areas and gain some much-needed strength.
As for the others, I think Harrell probably projects the best. He'll get the tag of system QB but is far more talented than past Tech QBs if you ask me. Someone will take a risk on Freeman because of his size, but I just don't see it. And Robinson, though a good college QB with his mobility, just isn't going to be an NFL guy. |

Drew Brees was projected to be a late 1st round/early 2nd round pick, and he was the first pick in the 2nd round. Chase Daniel is projected to be a 5th or 6th round pick. He has a short fuse, loses his temper frequently, and sulks on the sidelines when things aren't going his way. Those intangibles don't exactly do anything to enhance his draft status. |

Bradford is first for me. He just has the best tools of the bunch.
I like Harrell a lot, but it's hard to judge a Mike Leach QB. Even if you throw out the recent TT QBs who were never serious pro prospects, Leach was the offensive coordinator at Kentucky when Tim Couch was the 1st overall pick. That will really hurt Harrell's prospects. I agree with Karl that McCoy just seems like a winner, and I wouldn't be surprised if he has a solid pro career. |
I don't get the love for Chase Daniel. I would expect his NFL career to be closer to Brooks Bollinger's than Drew Brees'.
I suspect that Bradford, McCoy, Freeman, Sanchez, Tebow and Stafford all come out this year. |
Tebow won't see a down as an NFL QB. No way. He throws ugly passes and doesn't have a lot of speed compared to NFL defensive players.
He will be worse then Alex Smith, and no one will touch him with a ten foot pole. |
There's a pretty decent chance that the first two QBs drafted next spring are both Oklahoma products: Bradford and Rhett Bomar.
|
Hopefully the Vikings can draft a QB that might play within two seasons because their situation is absolutely horrendous.

I'm not sure who that is. Nope, can't remember that name at all. |
Bomar can't even complete 60% of his passes at Sam Houston. No chance he gets a whiff of the firsr day.
|
I wanted to vote for Todd, but I just couldn't :(

I thought McCoy already announced he's staying for another year. From what I read, he's not expected to be a top rated QB on draft day. |
And FWIW, I think college stats are generally meaningless, but I do think if a QB isn't completing 60% of his passes that something isn't right.
|
I have read in a couple of places, including I think here, that because of some change in the cba, rookie salaries are expected to drop after next year. So players like McCoy or Sanchez are better off coming out early.
Don't know if its true, but its also a fairly weak qb class, quite a few teams need qbs, and the success of Flacco and Ryan will probably inflate the value of qbs on draft day. Put it all together and I'd be surprised if any half-decent qb stays in school. |
Quote:
Oh no that is true. Yeah I suspect more juniors and RS sophmore then ever to be in this draft because of that CBA thing. |
Of course, more underclassmen declaring expands the talent pool, which could force you even further down the board, which lowers your salary even more. And since it's the bonuses that are much more out of whack than the actual annual salaries, I can't see how this would affect anyone by a huge margin outside of (maybe?) the top 15 or so picks.

I would really love to see where you get this kind of information on Chase? He is the opposite of everything you say about him. He's a leader and everyone on the team and staff love the way he carries himself at practices and during games. |
Quote:
Fixed that for you, but I have just one question. Are you Chase Daniels wife, or just his mistress? |
Bradford for me. I think he and McCoy will be starting NFL QBs.
Harrell is a complete wildcard to me. I think Reesing and maybe Daniel will get to carry clipboards for a few years. |

Colt McCoy is the #11 player at DraftTek's big board, and the #2 QB. Per their site, Draft Tek does not rank players, their list is a blend of lists compiled by other reputable scouting sites. Its still very early, but McCoy appears to be a genuine prospect, at least in some people's eyes. |

However, in their four round draft they did on Nov. 4 they don't have anyone selecting McCoy. |
I choose Harrell. He can make the throws. If he can drop back, he'll make millions.
|
As someone who follows the Big XII very closely, I can assure you that Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford will both be coming back next year.
|
If ALL the guys who could come out do come out, the QB class of '10 looks pretty bleak. Juice Williams? Jimmy Clausen? That's an argument for staying in school for somebody like McCoy - he'd almost certainly be the first qb chosen in '10, if everybody else leaves.
Bradford, though - I think if he comes out he's the first qb taken in '09. He'd be crazy to stay. imo |
Bradford and no one else is close.
Harrell hasn't taken snaps from under center and its something that a lot of fans overlook. The adjustment from reading defenses while in the shotgun to making the read while dropping back, and more importantly, having to turn your back to the defense during playaction is something that most of these guys can't overcome. I don't see Chase Daniel or Todd Reesing getting much of a look from the NFL. Every year there seems to be 1-2 guys like this that are short, average-weak armed players that are a dime a dozen at the end of NFL benches. |

I have the same feeling. |
I'll fill in some information about Bradford. He was not a highly recruited player out of high school. He was rated 3-stars on Rivals. OU signed him as a career backup. He ran the scout team while redshirting his freshman year. Last year, after Bradford's phenomenal start, Paul Thompson was interviewed at halftime of one of OU's games. Thompson took over at QB after Bomar was kicked off of the team in August 2006, while Bradford ran the scout team. The announcer asked Thompson if he was surprised at Bradford's early success, and Thompson basically said that he didn't know him very well, and that he wasn't aware of Bradford's talent.
Bradford is a redshirt sophomore this year, and I'll say that there's almost no chance that he comes out early. He has spoken out in several interviews that he has a long way to go to improve his skills, that he enjoys college life, and that he's serious about his education. |
I don't know that any of these guys becomes an instant NFL star, but I think Daniels and Harrell have potential for productive careers. Verdict is still out on Bradford. By the end of next year, I think we know a lot more about whether he's a top draft pick or not. McCoy reminds me of a more athletic Major Applewhite. Great college QB, but I don't know that his game translates well to the pros. The rest of these guys wash out of the NFL, or are career journeymen.
