NFL Week 17: It's the Final Countdown...

Yeah, somewhat not good form by starting it before the Monday game, but they announced some Week 17 game time changes under the flex plan.

As expected, the Broncos-Chargers "Winner Takes the AFC West" game will be the Sunday Night game at 8:15

The Pats-Bills game will be at 1. If they win, they will be huddled around the TV afterwards as both games that can get them into the playoffs have been moved to 4:15 starts.

The Jets At the Dolphins will start at 4:15... if the Pats lose, this becomes a "Winner takes the AFC East" game.

The Jaguars at the Ravens will also be at 4:15, Baltimore makes the playoffs with a win.

On the NFC side:

Oakland @ Tampa Bay is at 1. Tampa Bay needs to win to have any shot. A Tampa win eliminates the Eagles. If the Bucs LOSE, however, then the Cowboys-Eagles (4:15) game is Winner Make the Playoffs. If the Bucs win, then the Cowboys need a win to get put in.

Cringer 12-22-2008 12:24 PM

Lions at Packers. Packers probably lose, just to top off our great season which I am sure will also see us lose to the Bears tonight.

You mean like "the Jimmy Johnson-led Dolphins teams in the playoffs"? :p

MIJB#19 12-22-2008 01:47 PM

Still looking at playoff scenarios. I think I'm going to wait for MNF. That AFC picture was pretty clear and easy to figure out, but that NFC picture... Dallas, Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Chicago and Philadelphia could setup for a couple of freak scenarios... It took a little bit too much time so far to make it worth the effort. ;)

MIJB#19 12-22-2008 01:50 PM

AFC playoffs clinch scenarios:

Miami Dolphins
* clinch AFC East with win (they secured tie-breakers over New England)
* clinch AFC East with tie + New England loss/tie
* clinch wild card with tie + Baltimore loss

New England Patriots
* clinch AFC East with win + Miami loss/tie
* clinch AFC East with tie + Miami loss
* clinch wild card with win + Miami win + Baltimore loss/tie
* clinch wild card with tie + Miami win/tie + Baltimore loss

New York Jets
* clinch AFC East with win + New England loss
* clinch wild card with win + New England win/tie + Baltimore loss

Pittsburgh Steelers
* clinched bye week as 2nd seed

Baltimore Ravens
* clinch wild card with win
* clinch wild card with tie + either Miami or New England loss/tie
* clinch wild card with New England loss (in this scenario either Miami finished 2nd (over whom the Ravens have head to head tie-breakers) or the Patriots)

Tennessee Titans
* clinched home field advantage

Indianapolis Colts
* clinched wild card and play at AFC West winner

Denver Broncos
* clinch AFC West with win/tie (vs San Diego)

San Diego Chargers
* clinch AFC West with win (over Denver)

johneh 12-22-2008 03:15 PM

Steelers 999
Browns (49)
(Browns get negative 49 because the scoreboard couldn't go any higher)

Hopefully the crappy one.

Rooting for the Cowboys to lose so the Lions get a better draft pick is all I have left anymore really.

Go Eagles!

Izulde 12-22-2008 03:19 PM

Finally I'll get to watch a Dolphins game on TV. :)

Normally we go back to Racine on the 28th from up north, but this year we're heading back on the 29th so I can watch the Dolphins on the 28th.

I'll be geeked out in my Dolphins gear and cheering us on to a hopeful AFC East title!!!

Steelers 997
Browns (42)

NFC Playoffs scenarios

New York Giants
* clinched home field advantage

Dallas Cowboys
* clinch wild card with win
* clinch wild card with tie + Tampa Bay loss + Chicago or Minnesota tie
* clinch wild card with tie + Tampa Bay tie + Chicago or Minnesota loss
(the last two scenarios are not cummulative because of Tampa Bay winning a three-way tie at 9-6-1 all)

Philadelphia Eagles
* clinch wild card with win + Tampa Bay loss + Chicago or Minnesota loss
(Philadelphia has losing tie-breakers to all three wild card rivals)

Minnesota Vikins
* clinch NFC North with win
* clinch NFC North with tie + Chicago loss/tie
* clinch NFC North with loss + Chicago loss
* clinch wild card with tie + Chicago win + Philadelphia win + Tampa Bay loss
(Minnesota only goes into the wild card hunt with a tie and can only take it if they're only tied to Philadelphia)

Chicago Bears
* clinch NFC North with win + Minnesota loss/tie
* clinch NFC North with tie + Minnesota loss
* clinch wild card with win + Minnesota win + Dallas loss/tie + Tampa Bay loss/tie
* clinch wild card with tie + Minnesota win/tie + Philadelphia win + Tampa Bay loss/tie
(Chicago only wins the division by doing better than Minnesota; the wild card is only their's if they end up untied (unless it's just Atlanta), or just tied with Philadelphia)

Carolina Panthers
* clinched wild card
* clinch NFC South with win/tie or Atlanta loss/tie

Atlanta Falcons
* clinched wild card
* clinch NFC South with win + Carolina loss
(fall back to 6th seeds if they lose and Dallas wins)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
* clinch wild card with win + Dallas loss/tie
* clinch wild card with tie + Dallas tie + Minnesota tie +Chicago win
* clinch wild card with tie + Dallas tie + Minnesota win +Chicago tie
* clinch wild card with tie + Philadelphia win + Minnesota or Chicago loss/tie
(if 10-6, they have tie-breakers over Chicago, but not over Dallas; if 9-6-1, they have tie-breakers in all 3-way ties, plus in a 2-way tie with Philadelphia)

Arizona Cardinals
* clinched NFC West as 4th seed

Greyroofoo 12-24-2008 10:10 AM

I wonder if Brett will be giving the Lions any advice again.

EagleFan 12-24-2008 10:30 AM

Lousy Eagles, the NFC playoff picture could have been much clearer if they beat Washington last week.

Sadly we probably get more Andy "isn't the running game against the rules" Reid as the excuse will be "We came so close and a couple of breaks would have gotten us in".

(Sorry, still pissed off from that loss. I have never been so angry at a loss before in my life.)

Thomkal 12-24-2008 10:57 AM

I'm just glad so many teams have playoff hopes still. It will make this last week of games a lot of fun to watch.

Honolulu_Blue 12-24-2008 11:15 AM

I fear this scenario.

Tampa beats Oakland. Oakland stinks and Tampa has the playoffs in their sights.

That game is over before the Eagles/Cowboys game, so the Eagles are deflated and go out and play spiritless game and the Cowboys win.

That would be sad.

MIJB#19 12-24-2008 11:25 AM

Bears are probably screwed because I doubt the Giants play many starters, and no way is Jacobs seeing much action, if any.

ESPN - Wes Welker of New England Patriots fined $10K by NFL

"The NFL told the newspaper that Welker was fined for "unsportsmanlike conduct for participation in an illegal demonstration by going to the ground.""

... ugh. A 15 yard penalty is bad enough, but a $10,000 fine for making a snow angel?

Bloody Stupid, that's what it is.

BTW, I know this is not going to be warmly received, but I really think Belichick should get the Coach of the Year award. Not just for losing Brady, but here's a stat for you.

Only three teams have more players with at least one start in the NFL, then the Patriots

(Top 5 teams ranked by number of starters and their record)

1. Seattle Seahawks (46) (4-11)
T2. Cincinatti Bengals (45) (3-11-1)
T2. Detroit Lions (45) (0-15)
T4. New England Patriots (42) (10-5)
T4. New Orleans Saints (42) 8-7

The rules are pretty straight forward where that is concerned. You go to the ground to celebrate you get fined. There is no "snow angel" clause. He could have gone to the sideline and done that all he wanted but not in the field of play.

Thanks.

I use nothing but Notepad (to write in), some website's standings and schedules (used Yahoo!'s as that site loads relatively fast on my old laptop, compared to NFL's). It helps if the standings include divisional and intraconference records, because they come to play at times. That and my own brain to forsee possible scenarios.

The whole breakdown making is something I like doing and have built quite the experience with it through FOF MP leagues. It helped me in finding tricks to quickly figure out common games tie-breakers and seeing other trends. Sometimes I write out stuff, but having built experience really helped to be able to do it relatively quickly.

If the NFL would get rid of ties, that would make things a bit easier. Although, this season the Eagles tied game and their week 17 clash with Dallas eliminated dozens of scenarios between potential 9-7 teams in the NFC wild card race. :D

miami_fan 12-26-2008 11:52 AM

Where the hell did all this Bronco hate by the Chargers come from?

larrymcg421 12-26-2008 12:25 PM

I'd be annoyed about the scheduling if I was a Pats fan. If they win at 1pm, then the Jets don't have much motivation to beat Miami at 4:15pm.

But you can go to the ground, pray, point to the sky, etc and that's all cool.

Pumpy Tudors 12-26-2008 01:02 PM

Some random thoughts from a Broncos fan:

After enduring the past few subpar years, it would be kinda nice to see the Broncos return to the playoffs, but they really don't deserve to be there. Of course, I'll be cheering for my favorite team on Sunday night, but the Chargers deserve it a little more than the Broncos do. Hell, if Hochuli doesn't blow that call early in the season (and all other results had been the same), the Chargers would've clinched by now. I honestly won't be very upset if the Chargers win on Sunday, as the Colts would probably go into Denver and blow out the Broncos in the playoffs anyway. The Chargers are more likely to give Indy a good game.

It's embarrassing that Denver could make the playoffs with a 4-2 divisional record in the AFC West (and it should be 3-3). The Chargers have taken care of business within their own division, so with all other things being equal, they really should be in.

I guess it's easy for me to say these things because it's not a terrible situation for Broncos fans either way. If Denver wins, playoff time. If Denver loses, they didn't deserve it anyway. I feel bad for Chargers fans in a way because their team has been competitive or dominant in almost every game, yet their season comes down to having to beat a team that they should've already gotten a win against.

Oh, well. Go Broncos anyway.

New England win/tie + NY Jets win + Baltimore loss => wild card

See above.

But I do love how the "Favre is thinking about not returning next year" stories have already started, and I'd love to see the Jets have given up the picks they did for one season that ends without a playoff bid...

I love the Jets and wished they never let Pennington go, but if they don't make the playoffs, isn't it just a 4th rounder? I wish we kept Chad and our 4th rounder, but I don't see it as a total bust. I think having Favre there really did help Thomas Jones get going, but I'm not sure Chad would've had the same success he's had in Miami.

gstelmack 12-26-2008 02:58 PM

Quote:

It cost the Jets a conditional fourth-round pick in 2009, but the pick will escalate to a first-rounder if Favre appears in 80% of the plays and the Jets make it to the Super Bowl, according to a league source. The pick could be a second- or third-rounder depending on Favre's playing time and the Jets' performance.

So yeah, definitely a fourth, maybe more, don't know what the specifics of playing time / performance are.

Just an interesting note for Week 17 ..

Since Hyzuinga is selling the Fins, Parcells has 30 days to opt out of his contract and get paid remaining monies since his deal stipulated if the team was sold at any time he could leave.

Should be interesting to see if he decides to do it.

It seems like an easy decision to leave.

He gets his entire contract, paid in full, no strings attached. So if he stays, he's basically working for free.

SirFozzie 12-28-2008 12:20 PM

Wow. This is going to be a three yards and a wind gust of dirt game in Buffallo. Apaprently the wind is so bad that Buffalo, against the wind, has decided not to throw at all.

I think short passing is still possible - that's something of an advantage for the Pats (I think still Cassell is dreadful throwing deep, and he's going to crash hard with some other team next year - assuming Brady can come back).

Yep. As a Lions fan I can only hope Old Man Ford realizes the gift this could be. Parcells was rumored to have called in 2000 before Millen was named President to say he was interested because he has a lot of respect for Ford and would love to work under him.

The problem is Ford is stubborn and doesn't want to fire Lewand and Mayhew, but if that's what it'd take for Parcells, you have to do it.

Anyway, I think at the end of the day Parcells opts out and gets like 6 mil per year from the Dolphins to stay.
