SANFORD AND BUNCH

CAST:

Mom - Florida Sanford
Dad - Fred Sanford
Brother - Theo Sanford
Sister - Marsha Sanford
Best Friend - Fred "Rerun" Stubbs
Pet - Lassie
Bad Guy - Deacon Frye
Wildcard (Teacher/Coach) [not pictured] - Mr. Cooper
Butler - Geoffrey

Synopsis:

Fred Sanford sells the family's junkyard to developers looking to "renovate" an area of DC. He makes a killing, but decides to stay in apartment 227 where they have always lived. He does however upgrade his lifestyle, quits working (doctors tell him he has to because of his heart), and hires a butler. Shortly after the sale of the junkyard a close friend of Theo's, Marsha Brady, comes into school with a horrible broken nose. After allegations of abuse run rampant Marsha is invited to come live with the Sanfords (along with her dog Lassie for comfort) and is eventually adopted. The show initially revolves around Fred, but as the show progresses it shifts to Theo and his best friend Rerun. Theo and Rerun are on their local High School's basketball team coached by Mr. Cooper. Mr. Cooper's team is terrible, but he teaches them as much as he can - on the court and in the classroom. Another ongoing theme is the local church Deacon, Deacon Frye, is constantly hitting up Fred for large donations after the sale of the junkyard.

This cast provides fantastic comedy relief, but also tackles serious subjects like abuse, death, obesity, dyslexia, and many other serious life issues. It does it all with a hint of humor that is a hit with all audiences.

To me, the blurb about a pick can mean as much as the pick itself, since it helps put some context around the picks, here are the ones for my picks:

Perhaps the greatest character ever created for TV. He was much more than the gruff malcontent that so often came through. Most people have some part of the character that they can either strongly identify with or know someone just like him.

The selection of Mayberry might have forced my hand a bit. I was hoping this would slide a couple more rounds, but probably not now that location has been brought up and people are thinking about it.

Is there a better locale for a sitcom than a tropical island? I think not. Everyone else can have their urban scene, suburbia, or idyllic countryside. My family is living large on the shores of Gilligan's Island. Just watch out for the occasional headhunters.

I almost went with 'son' as the category here, because Fred and Doris Ziffel treated him as their son. But name me a smarter. more kickass pet in all of sitcom history. Go ahead. You can't. That's why Arnold gets my pick for the pet category. Everyone else can have their dog, cat, bird or fish. For a sitcom, you can't get wackier than a pig.

One of the only sitcoms I can think of with the focus on the brother. Also, I don't think they ever said the family's last name on the show, that's why I left it out.

"Hello, Jerry."
No more chilling words have ever been spoken during a sitcom. Another character with an unknown last name, Newman is a postal worker who is always on the edge of breakdown, and is a cunning mastermind. The others on my family team will do well to keep a close eye on him.

Going with a wildcard in the truest sense of the word. You only knew one of his names, never saw his face, but he was always ready to give some well needed advice.

7.3 Daphne Moon, Frasier - Housekeeper/Butler/Nanny

She filled all of the above mentioned roles during her time on the show. And a stone cold hotty to boot.

Fits the category description to a T. Has been Vince's best friend since they were kids, and is the only one that continually puts put with the crap when Vince goes into star prima donna mode, and often times is the only one that can reel Vince back in.

Ok, thinking outside the box on this one. A lot of sitcoms have a wacky theme, and my next pick most definitely fits the bill. With Archie Bunker as the dad, having a mom that can handle and deal with him is a tall order. So that led me to my pick:

9.3 The car, from My Mother the Car - Mom

Only a car possessed by the ghost of Jerry Van Dyke's character's mom that only communicates through the car's radio can take the spot of Edith Bunker.

10.10 Buffy Wilson, Bosom Buddies - Sister

This character is the 'sister' to Tom Hanks' Kip Wilson, when he needs to keep his female identity in place, and not get kicked out of the all-women's hotel where he is staying. This construct was a key reason the plot was able to work. Plus, it gets Tom Hanks on my team.

Edit to expound(I didn't change my vote):

The winners in my eyes ended up being the ones that didn't have too many bad picks. Maple Leafs didn't have the best pick most times IMO but none of his picks dragged him down any. Raiders Army did great until he went all Disney on us. I had Wade in the lead after 7 rounds but really didn't like his last few picks, espicially the Deacon from Amen and Mr Cooper as a Wildcard. To me the wildcard character was a chance to take an iconic sitcom character who didn't really fit anywhere else in a family. Kramer and Sam Malone got huge points from me there as a result. Others will interpret that category differently I am sure.

I expect the voting to shift quite a bit depending on if you go with:

A) Which list has the best characters in those categories
B) Which list makes the best Sitcom Family

I shot for B here, curious to see how the voters look at it.

Maple Leafs 01-20-2009 08:43 AM

I'm with Wade on this one.

And since Lassie wasn't a sitcom, we all agree he's disqualified, right?

Maple Leafs 01-20-2009 08:46 AM

I won't bother with a long-winded lobbying campaign.

Look, folks.... I have Balki. I mean, I really don't know what else you need. Balki is going to be hanging around with Homer Simpson and Tony Macelli, and occasionally Larry Dallas will come over to talk about girls with Mike Seaver. Also, the dog can talk.

If you wouldn't watch that show, then you are secretly a woman. You just are. If you don't vote for me, you should sit down the next time you pee.

I'm not gonna do a ton of campaigning but I have in my stable Sam Malone, George Costanza, Bart Simpson and Mike Brady.

DeToxRox 01-20-2009 09:40 AM

Fonzie, Latka, Kevin Arnold, Al Bundy and the CHeers Bar.

The hyjinx that'd ensue!

MrDNA 01-20-2009 09:44 AM

I have my top three, but I need to put them in order still. Tough, tough, tough. Some real good drafting here.

Tasan 01-20-2009 09:45 AM

Hi folks. Not a lot to say other than I feel I have a very strong team. Roseanne and Red bouncing off each other, but really being able to work well together, then Richie and Rudy both in those classic "kid to teenager" hijinks, reeled in my Mr. Belvedere when they go too far. Al coming over and driving Red crazy but being a real good friend Red never had. Then, can you imagine Urkel coming through the door, Richie and Rudy being happy to see him but Roseanne and Red going out of their mind because of him. Finally, Dino being the loyal pet Red never had in the weiner dog in that 70s show, helps him foil his boss's, Burns, evil plans. All this revolving around this all too familiar neighborhood

Doesn't get much better than that, does it?

MrDNA 01-20-2009 09:50 AM

1. Maple Leafs
2. Danny
3. Larry

To me, the most important spot was the wildcard. Maple and Danny had GREAT wildcards, but who would Larry's Mr. Wilson have to yell at? Beaver is too much of a goody-goody to create any kind of interesting dynamic there, so that's why Larry is third. Maple gets the nod at number 1 because of the Homer/Edith dynamic - she's a perfect enabler for him. Also, with Balki coming over to call the whole family ridiculous? Too nice. I don't think this small Colorado town can handle them.

Bad-example 01-20-2009 10:36 AM

Every list has a loser pick that leaves me unwilling to vote for it.

1. Fail
2. Fail
3. Fail

MikeVic 01-20-2009 11:55 AM

I'll say:

1. Danny
2. DeTox
3. Lathum

Honorable mention to Maple Leafs, and a special shout out to Raiders Army... I think he has the most characters from "newer" shows.

I think I'd have the most fun watching Danny's show. Stewie is one of my favourite characters ever. Kramer and Mr. Ed would be great, and Cory and Samantha are awesome too. Really solid.

I think a problem with me for this draft was that I don't think I've seen half the shows people picked from. And the ones I've seen recently for the first time because of Peachtree TV (Sanford & Son, Diff'rent Strokes) weren't very good, so I don't care for their characters at all.

1. Maple Leafs, by far the best, good job
2. Larry most for last pick, Ethel. Nearly every best friend in sitcoms is based on her
3. DeToxRox

Fun to watch. I think there should be more time between the creation of the draft and the start (historical person draft needed this too). Could of cleared up sitcom/drama/cartoon prob, making it mom/wife (or not). In other words, finding the categories that will have the richest well to draw upon.

ISiddiqui 01-20-2009 12:36 PM

What, no Colonel Tigh for Best Friend of a Main Character?! Shame.

Anyway:

1. Maple Leafs
2. Danny
3. larrymcg421

RendeR 01-20-2009 01:19 PM

All I'm going to say is that I tried to create the best all around sit-com family based on individual talent.

Every single one of my picks either DID get their own show or could very well carry their own shows if given the opportunity.

Of all my Live person picks I think Jon Cryer is the only one that did not get /have his own sitcom already and he may well get a spinoff from 2.5 men.

RendeR 01-20-2009 01:22 PM

Dr Sak: Are we allowed to critique everyone's list also? or should that be saved for after the voting?

Izulde 01-20-2009 01:38 PM

1. Tasan
2. Karlifornia
3. DeToxRox

I think Karl's list should be getting more love. Some great all-around picks there that I think are being overlooked.

No question about it, though, Tasan's got the deepest, best draft out of the bunch.

Crim 01-20-2009 01:38 PM

Definitely no runaway favorite for me, five drafters were bunched at the top. I fooled around with different ways of scoring, and kept getting different winners.

I settled on a point for solid pick, two additional points for winning a category. Then I nudged people up or down based on the overall theme of their draft. This got wade in for example. Crim's Official Definitive Selections of the Top Three are:

1. Danny
2. RendeR
3. wademoore

Honorable mention: larrymcg for several solid picks, and Karlifornia for winning two categories.

Incidentally, when I said there was no runaway winner for me, here's evidence. Nobody won more than two categories. All participants except for one made at least one "solid" pick, by my scoring system.

Congratulations, Danny, for winning the contest! Because I said so.

I dont see any problem with it. You are talking about other people's drafts not votes right?

BrianD 01-20-2009 01:55 PM

1. Maple Leafs
2. wademoore
3. Danny

I am voting based on overall sitcom cohesiveness. The main pairings I looked at were brother and sister, brother and best friend, mother and father, and the other spots filling in interesting characters.

Maple Leafs: The Homer Simpson/Edith Bunker combination sounds like fun. I'm not sure how a cartoon and a human make a marriage work, but they would play off of each other well. Mike Sever and Mallory Keaton would make for an interesting family combo and both of them could be the exact same as their original character. The addition of Larry to Mike would surely add hijinks. Add in Balki and Buck and you've got a winner.

wademoore: This cast is arguably good enough to take over the top spot. Fred and Esther make an excellent pair. Theo and Rerun would be loads of fun, and adding Marsha is brilliant.

Danny: A third place entry that has lots of potential but a few missed spots. Jed and Samantha...fun and could probably be done decently well, but not a homerun. Corey and Samantha (the younger) could be loads of fun, and adding Charles to Samantha gives us all kinds of sexual tension (if you allow Samantha to be old enough to have the tension not be creepy). Adding Kramer to the mix with Mr. Ed gives just enough craziness to pull this pack to number 3.

Yeah their drafts , the voters will vote whatever way they choose thats up to them.

rowech 01-20-2009 02:45 PM

Tough call but I think my voting goes like this:

1. Larrymcg -- His top five picks are outstanding. He has a defining choice at all five of his spots and lands another with his final picks.

2. Maple Leafs -- He doesn't have a bad pick in the bunch but I think he falls short of Larrymcg.

3. Tasan -- came down to him and Lathum for 3rd place and I just matched them up 1 by 1. I had him come out in front 5.5 to 4.5.

Coffee Warlord 01-20-2009 02:46 PM

1. DeTox
2. Larry
3. Wade

I went for overall strength here. 1 or 2 top flights and the rest (in my view) mediocres were excluded. These 3 I think assembled the strongest cast.

gstelmack 01-20-2009 02:51 PM

Danny
larrymcg
Maple Leafs

I took points off for shows that weren't really family shows. Really Danny and larrymcg were very close in my mind, but Stewie Griffin FTW!

Miley... yeah. :D
