Cover Songs You'd Like To Hear

I believe there have been threads in the past on the topic of cover songs, but I'm not sure if there has been one on this question specifically.

What song would you like covered, by which artist? Could be alive or dead, doesn't matter.

The idea popped in my head while looping She Blinded Me With Science on XM during the ride home the other day. I decided I'd like to hear a cover version sung by Tom Jones (well really, what song WOULDN'T I like to hear covered by Tom Jones??).

cartman 02-19-2009 01:17 PM

Lil' Jon covering "Nothing Compares 2 U"

Lathum 02-19-2009 01:30 PM

May be a little OT, but if someone likes cover songs they should check out a band called Me First and the Gimme Gimme's. All they do if fun covers of songs like Take me home country roads, Rocket Man, Walking on sunshine, etc...

Mustang 02-19-2009 01:58 PM

Everything Bob Seger has done should be covered by someone so maybe I won't hate his music as much. I doubt it, but it is the only way to be sure.

Mandy is my favorite.

I love cover songs. It's part of the reason I like Punk music. I'll try to think more specifically on this topic, though. When I was a teenager and listened to country I used to always think about rock/punk covers of country songs.

Kodos 02-19-2009 03:15 PM

It seems like usually there are more country covers of rock songs. Like the abomination they made of Life Is A Highway.

rowech 02-19-2009 03:25 PM

My neighbor doesn't seem to complain when he's cashing those royalty checks. :D

Yes, and clearly that has been a failure -- so let's do it the other way!

Although Johnny Cash doing Hurt was awesome.

I watched Cars for the first time the other day and just did not like that cover of the song. Absolutely awful

Groundhog 02-19-2009 04:38 PM

I like the Flaming Lips' "symphonic" cover of Kylie Minogue's "Can't get you out of my head", and I'd like to hear them cover more pop songs.

Sgran 02-20-2009 02:52 PM

I would like someone to not only cover, but also complete John Lennon's unfinished Beatles songs, like Mean Mr. Muster.

CamEdwards 02-20-2009 03:25 PM

I'd like to hear the Black Keys do a version of The Kinks "20th Century Man".

My favorite Kinks song is "Living On a Thin Line", thanks to the Sopranos.

I'll give a list of my favorite cover songs, and try to think of some songs I'd actually like to see covered. Here goes....

Favorite cover songs:

Urge Overkill- Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon
My Morning Jacket- Tyrone
Sublime- Scarlet Begonias
Ween- All Of My Love
The White Stripes- Jolene
The Red Hot Chili Peppers- Higher Ground
The Horrors- Jack The Ripper
The Smashing Pumpkins- Landslide
Oasis- There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

Songs I'd like to hear covered:

After some thought....wishing for a song to be covered seems hollow to me somehow.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes Ruin Johnny's Bar Mitzvah is hilarious-- recorded live at a kid's bar mitzvah they were hired to play at.

cuervo72 03-05-2009 10:04 AM

Came up with another one. I'd like to have heard Sammy Davis Jr. sing Get Down Tonight.

(came to me singing to The Strobe while congested)

ISiddiqui 03-05-2009 10:46 AM

The White Stripe's "Death Letter Blues" is probably my favorite cover song of all time. Let's just say I'd like to hear the Stripes cover any classic blues song they haven't covered yet ;).

B & B 03-05-2009 10:49 AM

Love Shack - The Smiths

sterlingice 03-05-2009 11:07 AM

I'm curious about the economics of a cover song. Quite a few bands have had their "biggest" single with a cover. I heard Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal" this morning and that's the only thing anyone has really heard of them. The Atari's highest single on the charts was the remake of "The Boys of Summer". Both were quality covers for bands no one had really heard of.

Why don't more "unknown" bands do this to get some airplay, basically piggyback on the success of the "big song" to get heard?

SI

Because it usually brands them immediately as a gimmick, and it really doesn't make stations more likely to play a song #2.

DeToxRox 03-05-2009 11:22 AM

I'd pay great money to hear an acustic version of Tom Waits doing Pantera's Cemetary Gates

cthomer5000 03-05-2009 11:32 AM

I have no specific desire to hear this, but i think any female songstress could probably do a killer version of Linkin Park's "What I've Done."

DeToxRox 03-05-2009 11:37 AM

Oh, here is one Pumpy would love to hear:

Easy E covering House of the Rising Sun.

This. I would pay Lil Jon in blowjob dollars to get him to do this.

I wish Barry White would have covered "Oops! I Did It Again". Or Celine Dion doing "Baby Got Back" just to hear her sing "L.A. face with an Oakland booty." I can totally hear her singing that. She probably sings it in the shower. At least that's what I imagine when I'm feeling freaky.

I'd like to hear the Fun Loving Criminals cover some hard 70s funk/soul.

Atari's also did a cover of "I Remember You".

I do have a version of "Baby Got Back" done by Orange County metal band Throwdown that is surprisingly great.

Detox coming with some inspired ideas, between this and Eazy E. I had no idea you even knew who Tom Waits was.

STFU. Just because I want to hear good shit, and not the White Striples covering DMB like you doesn't make me less of a man. Bish.

cuervo72 04-12-2012 09:04 AM

I would like to hear an adapted version of Van Halen's Beautiful Girls done by Caro Emerald in a more jazzy, swing style. I think DLR's vocals already have that swing kind of rhythm, just take the rest of the song in that direction.

I also would have liked to hear Barry White sing Don't Leave Me This Way. Yes, it was originally sung by Teddy Pendergrass as a member of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, but...Barry White.

Grover 04-12-2012 09:34 AM

Some of my favorites...

"Suffragette City" - The Horrors
"I Want You (She's So Heavy)" - Last Shadow Puppets
"Fixing A Hole" - The Wood Brothers
"Strawberry Fields Forever" - Noel Gallagher
"Death Letter Blues" - The White Stripes
"Get Down Make Love" - Nine Inch Nails
"Just Got Paid" - Joe Bonnamassa

I'm with Siddiqui on "Death Letter Blues." I've seen Meg and Jack perform it live and it's something else.

Chief Rum 04-12-2012 10:19 AM

Just for shits and giggles, I would love to see Metallica do a cover of the Beatles "I Want To Hold Your Hand."

CrimsonFox 04-12-2012 10:32 AM

Romeovoid's "I might like you better if we slept together" done by Cee Lo Green :)

Heh...that might be interesting.

Never Say Never (the actual title) is a weird song for me as elements of it remind me of both March of the Swivelheads (from Ferris Bueller - specifically the 3:05 mark of Never vs the 3:30 mark of Swivelheads) and also Who Was In My Room Last Night (if you really amp up the beat/bass).

CrimsonFox 04-12-2012 10:47 AM

Ahhh Never say Never that's it! can't believe i forgot that

CrimsonFox 04-12-2012 10:51 AM

they were on bands reunited. was sad that the sax player couldn't play as there was something wrong with his hand. He just had to watch from the sidelines.

Pumpy Tudors 04-12-2012 10:53 AM

Cover songs I'd like to hear:

Miley Cyrus - "The Devil Went Down to Georgia".
Adam Sandler - "Under the Boardwalk"
Prince - "Material Girl"
Paul McCartney - "Let Me Clear My Throat"
Bette Midler - "I Touch Myself"

Well, usually ... but not always.

Take Alien Ant Farm for example. Smooth was actually their second single from their debut album... the first, Movies , was subsequently re-released as the "second" single and spent 30 weeks on the charts, reaching #18 on Modern Rock after stiffing the first time around.

The first single off their second album also charted, but peaked out at #29 on ModRock and that was their last chart appearance.

In their case, it wasn't so much that they got branded as they appeared unable to follow up on the success they had with the cover & radio simply moved on from them.

Another test case of sorts is out there right now, Charm City Devils who are getting Rock and Active Rock airplay with Man of Constant Sorrow. I believe this is their first taste of chart success (in spite of touring with Motley Crue a couple years back), I think it definitely gives them a better shot at airplay for their next single than they would have gotten otherwise.

CrimsonFox 04-12-2012 11:48 AM

Kathy Griffin - Brian Wilson (BNL), and in her version she sings "Kathy Griffin" instead of Brian Wilson.

CrimsonFox 04-12-2012 11:49 AM

Cee Lo Green singing Seal's "Crazy" and Seal singing Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy"

Suicane75 04-12-2012 11:56 AM

Someday I'm going to record an album of nothing but 80's pop songs covered in the style of Country. It's so easy, It's so money.

A buddy of mine & I used to do this with rap songs. I think the funniest one i remember is The Humpty Dance ala Brooks & Dunn style country.

Some funny shit right there if you just start singing it country style in your head. :)

Matthean 04-12-2012 01:43 PM

I was thinking of naming a band something like "The Can't Sing All-Stars" and feature songs by Dylan, Waits, Cohen, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. You can find local level talent and still get better signing in that band.

I can't believe no one here has ever heard of Beatallica!

I bet you didn't expect someone to actually post something that pretty much fulfilled your wish. :)

http://

Ksyrup 04-12-2012 02:06 PM

The song titles for Beatallica's songs are probably better than the songs themselves.

While My Guitar Deathly Creeps
All You Need Is Blood
Blackened in the USSR
Hey Dude
The Thing That Should Not Let It Be
Anesthesia (I'm Only Sleeping)
Leather Submarine

My wife found an mp3 somewhere of Brian Wilson covering that song.

Edit: It's not really a cover, but another of my favorites is Don Henley getting up on stage in Austin with Mojo Nixon to sing "Don Henley Must Die".

britrock88 04-13-2012 12:08 AM

We should not discuss covers without tipping the hat to the Cleverlys...
