Florida State University found guild of "major violations" by NCAA

Per ESPN, FSU self reported major academic improprieties across 10 different sports. The football team will have to forfeit all games during 2006 and 2007 in which ineligible athletes participated which will lower Bowden's career win total. They lose 2 scholarships this upcoming year, 3 the next year, and 1 the following year. The team is also on 4 years probation.

wow that sucks he looses all those games for his win total.

Dr. Sak 03-06-2009 03:28 PM

I bet he doesn't...Stoops lobbied to have his put back on a few years ago when Oklahoma got in trouble. So I expect the same thing to happen to Bowden.

I love how teams are happy to retroactively lose wins in most cases because it is a penalty that sounds harsh but has absolutely no bearing going forward. But, now that career wins actually means something to Bowden, FSU is drawing that line in the sand.

If he cheated (or allowed a culture of cheating to happen on his watch) then he should lose the wins. If he did not, then he should not.

Note--I can have such a reasonable opinion because I don't really care one way or the other about FSU. If, however, I liked them or disliked them, I would let that affect my view of the proper punishment and, indeed, of right and wrong itself.

just goes to show what we all knew - FSU is evil

Noop 03-06-2009 04:02 PM

:D One step closer to Bowden being sent on his merry way.

BB and *lousy* Prez TK can be shown the door, new leadership badly needed.

Its funny, I never liked Bowden until I saw "We are Marshall". I don't even know if he was represented accurately in the movie. But after I saw it, I couldn't help but change my opinion of him.

Is the NCAA officially a joke yet?

You mean for letting USC and the SEC get away with whatever they want while hammering teams like OU, Florida State and Co??

I'm sorry but I really hope Bowden loses about 15 wins. It's normally a crappy penalty but at least this gives it some teeth.

I don't understand the rolling of the eyes....

When was Kansas ever sanctioned by the NCAA?

I am not much of a Bowden fan these days but I am not sure why so many people dislike the man. Speaking as a Florida State fan I think he is really killing our program and that's why I am eager to see him leave.

Last year or two years ago- academic fraud, same type of stuff. Pretty much out of the football and women's hoops programs. Just ended a few months ago

I'm not talking specific to Bowden in that he deserves it more than someone else in his shoes. But you know how it is with "giving up wins"- it's crap. Everyone saw the games they won and will still remember them as wins, not losses, even if the record books say otherwise. This time that penalty actually means something because of Bowden's predicament, if it holds up.

These sanctions really mean nothing in the grand scheme of things other then bad publicity. The lost scholar ships means walk-on players will not be receiving one for the next two seasons. The whole thing is the NCAA grandstanding like they actually did something when this is really a slap on the wrist, if that at all.

sterlingice 03-06-2009 08:47 PM

Well, that's all it ever is- lots of silly grandstanding. It's not like the NCAA will ever death penalty anyone ever again and definitely not a big name program ("that's it, Sienna, you get the death penalty" "We just helped 2 hoops players write papers; USC football pays their players in cars, the SEC pays everyone in hookers and cash, and, for God's sake, Baylor killed a guy" "Um... go to your room).

I just mean that if the penalty costs Bowden a shot at the all-time wins title, it will actually mean something.
