What the hell do your tattoo's look like
 

Did a quick search and didn't see much in the way of pictures posted (at least of users tattoo's, found some fun shots of tats found on the web that were posted here) so hopefully I'm not duplicating.

I just got my first piece done and once it's healed up I'll post a picture of it, but it made me curious to see some pictures of the other tattoo's posters on here have (and any stories behind their meaning/significance). I'd been wanting one for almost 10 years and had never found a design I felt worthy of having made permanent, but am pretty happy to have taken that step now.

So yeah, please post some and share some stories. The conversations I came across in the search were a pretty good start, would love to hear and see more.

Oh I fully assume I'll get my fair share of that here and IRL. It'll be even more fun in the summer when I wear shorts as I got what I think might be a pretty controversial design (got a cross on my left calf that, once it's healed, should look like it's been torn into the skin more so than a tattoo).

So while it has religious significance to me (and I'll post more on that once I get a picture up), I'm sure it'll tick off a certain portion of the religious for bastardizing the symbol, others for having it done at all and others just to be contrary.

In the end though, worth it for me no matter what flack I catch in the future. Best part was that the procedure wasn't all that bad, I actually napped through about half of it which apparently isn't so much the norm for first timers, heh.

People make it out to be way worse then it really is. I actualy enjoy the pain from it.

Some people can't even watch someone else have it done. I got my last one when I was in Vegas with Cartman. He had to walk away :)

I'm scared to death of needles, that's why i never got a tattoo.

I assume that I would be better about getting it than watching it done to someone else. I don't plan on getting one (dont' have a problem with them, just not for me -- I actually like them a lot on other people), but I think if I did it wouldn't be that bad -- but I would wince a lot watching it done to someone else.

I dont think it hurt all that bad...... its just psychological.. :)

I'm not going to take a picture, but I have a Kanji on my right shoulder that (supposedly) means "energetic" or "prosperous". In reality I'm pretty sure it means "peer pressure", because that's what led to it appearing on my shoulder on my 25th birthday while on a road trip to Calgary.

Mainly a lurker around here...but I'll post first. I realize tattoos aren't for everyone. They are a very personal decision and some people are very much against them for a variety of reasons. I, however, love them. From the art you see, to the meaning they have to people...they are just something I gravitate to.

Keep in mind, I'm a 34 year old happily married father of three. I'm a career Fire Captain (16 years in the fire service), a homeowner, and an all around nice guy. My point in saying that? I'm a person who's made good decisions my whole life and done what is right for me and my family...including my tattoos. My wife, for the record, loves tattoos and currently has three beautiful ones herself.

Anyways, without further wait, here are mine:


My first tattoo I got at age 18. It is a terrible picture, and the tattoo was done by a friend. It needs a LOT of touch up work. It is a flaming skull wearing a fire helmet with two crossed axes behind it. My only "fireman" tattoo. Located on my upper right arm.


My second tattoo. It is the Bad Religion "Suffer Boy" from the album cover of Suffer. Along the top are the names of my three children. The tattoo encompasses a number of things: My favorite band, my favorite album, and most importantly three of the most important people ever to grace this Earth. Located on my upper left arm.


My "Tiger Bat"...logo for the band Tiger Army. Yeah, another band related logo...but I'm very loyal to the band that I like. Plus, I just like the look of the logo. Located on my right forearm.


My Psychobilly Zombie tat. Representitive of the ties between 50's Rockabilly type music and Punk Rock of the late 70's/early 80's. Also a genre of music that I really enjoy. Most of my friends say it's a great representation of my wife and I. Located on my left forearm. This one is my current favorite.


My newest tattoos...my Nautical Stars. The green star on my right wrist (starboard) represents finding your way in life. The red star on my left wrist (port) represents always finding your way home.

Well, that is them. I plan on getting more and so does the wife. I enjoy them, the process of getting them, and showing them. The pictures, however, don't do them justice. Seeing them in person and talking about them really is what it is all about.

I don't have any tattoos, but I work with a couple of young women who do. I look at them and imagine that they're on me.

Wait, I'm not sure if I'm talking about the women or the tattoos anymore.

The first one was by an old friend named Paul. He wasn't a professional and was kind of a "back yard butcher" as tattoo artists tend to call people who work out of their homes.

The Suffer Boy was done at a local studio called "Ink Addiction." Originally the owner, a great artist named James Kerr, was scheduled to do it...but ended up getting hurt and had to pass me to another artist. I can't remember his name (embarrassingly enough), but I love the work he did. I also fell in love with Ink Addiction and all subsequent tats were done there.

The Tiger Bat was done by an artist named Nate at Ink Addiction.

The Rockabilly Zombie one and my stars were done by James at Ink Addiction. He's also done two of my wife's tattoos. He is now officially "our" artist. Great guy, does awesome work, and just completes the experience. We're both actually planning our next tattoos with him.

Another "lurker" here. I don't post often but I come here everyday. (I'm also "Mrs. Hawk"). Thought I'd post pics of my tats as well!

The next two my second tattoo on my wrist says "I am not afraid I was born to do this" a quote from Joan of Arc. Which has become almost like my mantra. Reminding me I really can handle whatever life hands to me. The first photo of Ewok from Ink Addiction doing the tattoo, the next the finished tattoo.

My latest tattoo from James at Ink addiction is my rockabilly zombie tattoo, showing both my love of rockabilly and stand-up bass and my love of Zombies!

I have heard some of their music, and I really want to hear more of it but I just haven't sat down and listened to it. It is on my list of things I need to do!

My tattoos are an expression of myself. I love when people ask me about them and explaining what they mean to me and why I got them.

They're alright...I do like their music and look. I just haven't given them a lot of time and "listen to's."

Coincidentally, the upright bass player for Tiger Army was a former member of the Horrorpops. Tiff and I met him at the Hootenanny in Irvine, CA last year. Nice guy. Got our pic with him too. Though, his tattoos are a wee bit more extensive than ours:

Oh, I have a question: Why do people who sport tattoos have so many skeletons. I've never gotten that part. Not a criticism, just a question.

So I'm confused.

Old sailor's adage = red right returning, which we all recall when coming back into port (my dad has a sailboat). Of course, that means that when you're laving it's on your left...

However, there is also the rule of thumb that "port is red wine" which is for your running lights on a sailboat (and seems to hold true for planes), that is red on the left.

I love the stars, don't get me wrong, I have tattoos myself and am not trying to judge, just trying to understand..

I think it probably varies from person to person, but I just personally like the look. Now my wife isn't a big skeleton fan...but the Social D logo is a skele....so it is not so much about the skeleton its self, but more about the band and her love for their music and style.

I guess the best way to sum it up would be that you can see 100 skeleton tattoos out there, and each would probably have a different story as to why they chose it or what it means to them. :)

Questions are a good thing, and critiscism is understandable. Not everyone likes tattoos or gets them...but that's cool. Everyone views stuff like this in their own way. No worries at all.

I have 2 tattoos right now (plans for more). Neither is in a place easily self-photographed (lotus bloom on my right outer calf, bat on my right shoulderblade). If I can find someone to take photos for me when I get back in town, I shall post. If not, well, y'all lose. ;)

I took my meaning from some reading and research I did a while back on sailing, etc before lights, etc came into play. Kind the "ancient mariner" type thing. The subject of the nautical stars came up and that is how it was explained to me. :)

Like with many other things, I'm sure there are a lot of interpretations out there. That is the one I latched on to and that is what it means to me.

All is good and don't worry about explaining about judging, etc. Everyone is entitled to questions, opinions, etc. Heck if everyone shared the same opinion on things, life would be incredibly boring.

Heh....nowadays I am out of the norm because I don't have a tattoo. And in Austin, I am noticing a lot of people with some form of a tat regardless of age. At least the people I have worked with.

As a side comment, and I have no idea what to make of it, I've found that the more...remote towns I've been in seem to have more obvious tattoo parlors. I'm not sure if there's one in Columbia, MD and I'm pretty sure there isn't one in Ashburn, VA, but while up here in Vernon, NJ, there's one right down the road and saw one each of the next 2 towns over while driving around...none of these towns are what I'd consider anything approaching even the size of Ashburn.

Similarly, a co-worker who lives in Monrovia, MD said that one opened up near him. Don't get me wrong, I know a fair few in larger cities (like DC) but it's interesting that they seem to be prevalent in the smaller towns.
