Lollapalooza Lineup Announced
Lollapalooza: August 7-9, 2009
Looks like a good lineup. Quote:

Wow. I counted 25 off the bat I'd like to see, and about 5-6 others I've heard interesting things about.

Depeche Mode Tool The Killers Jane's Addiction Beastie Boys Lou Reed Snoop Dogg The Decemberists Neko Case Band of Horses Of Montreal Coheed and Cambria Those are the bands id like to see, not a bad lineup - I havent been to a Lollapalooza since the first one (which was one of the best shows of my life). |
I counted 7 bands...that I've heard of. So out of the loop.

What do you like? As long as it's not metal I could ping some of those names for you to check out on itunes or whatever. |
Coheed & Cambria are the only ones that I recognized that I wouldn't call the cops to shut down if they were playing in my back yard.
I'm surprised that I actually recognized more than a dozen of them at least by name (16 to be exact). |
That's a pretty damn awesome lineup.
|
Good lord, even with all the names I don't know, that's a stacked line-up.
This used to be an annual tradition for me, too, ever since they started this thing -- but marriage/kids/blah, blah, blah. I guessed the tickets to be about 200 bucks and it turns out advance passes are $190. I'm sure it's worth it, but . . . . |
I've heard of 90% of these and don't like a damn one of them...well, except Ben Folds and Andrew Bird, but unfortunately they are a few years beyond their best work, IMO. I wish Bird would go back to his Bowl of Fire stuff.

This from the guy who pointed out Tally Hall for me? No to Los Campesinos!? Band of Horses? Gomez? Gaslight Anthem? Silversun Pickups? Ah man, I'm disillusioned now. ;) |
Wow, I made it to double-digits in the recognition category with exactly 10. That was more than I expected.
|
wait... is it only in Chicago now? what happened ot the tour?

Eh, a lot of the bands in this lineup are just too...indie-sounding for me. Bad production, weak singing, a lot of 80s Brit-influenced music or post-grunge/punk stuff, etc. Of those you listed, Gomez is the only one that's vaguely interesting to me and I should try to hear some more of. But I'll admit I'm in a music rut right now. Nothing is really interesting me, other than what I've been listening to for the past 5 years or so - metal (mostly thrash, death, and symphonic), power pop, and singer/songwriter with definite Beatles/Beach Boys/60-70s pop-influenced vocals and musical styles. I've even lost my interest in Tool and barely touched the last 2 albums. Hell, I'd say my most exciting musical discovery of the past year - thanks to my 10-year old daughter - is figuring out that Drake Bell is not just another TV-created and hyped actor trying to make an extra buck by singing, but actually a legit musician who loves 70s pop and Jellyfish and is involved in writing most of his music. His last album is actually pretty great, and he's got a double CD/concept album coming out later this year. And he covered Joining a Fan Club on his DVD. But I digress. :) |
It's funny, I actually have no desire to see the headliners listed. Metal is the one genre (other than Jazz or new Country) that I really don't listen to at all, but there are some decent power pop bands listed here -- Vampire Weekend, Ra Ra Riot, Campesinos! and even Kaiser Chiefs come to mind.
Gomez puts on a good live show. IMO their best album is In My Gun if you're looking for somewhere to start. |

You have GOT to be shitting me. I cringe every time I've heard a note come out of him, poor guy simply can't sing a lick in spite of it being pretty obvious he'd like a music career instead of an acting career. I've felt bad for him on more than one occasion because of that. |
I have a very narrow/traditional definition of power pop, rooted in Big Star/Raspberries-type stuff from the 70s.

I don't know if they're in print anymore, but the DIY power pop compilations from Rhino would be right up your alley then.......four of them (two American and two British) power pop discs from mid-late 70's. Good stuff. |

Hell no, dude is great. And he can sing just fine, for me anyway. He's not pitch-perfect live, but that doesn't really bother me since I generally don't go to concerts anymore. But I've heard the DVD and seen a bunch of Youtube clips, and he does jsut fine. he does Jellyfish justice, which means he's more than adequate (as is his band). More important to me...his style is right up my alley. |
Tool...awesome
|
Lollapalooza? They still make that?
I've only heard of 9 of these performers, and since I don't see Weird Al on that list, Lollapalooza won't be seeing Pumpy Tudors. So there. |

BTW Ksyrup, have you checked out Tinted Windows yet? I haven't picked up the album, but it sounds like it'd be something up your alley.

I've heard it and wasn't all that impressed with it. The results are decidedly less than the sum of its parts. It's OK, but it didn't make me run out to buy it. I was expecting more. One new CD I'm digging is Fiction Family, which is the lead singer from Switchfoot and the "other guy" from Nickel Creek. When She's Near, which is streaming on their website, is great, and the album is solid. |
For those who have only heard of a few of these acts, you don't have to go far to have heard of them, if you actually want to. The "What are you listening to" 2009 thread mentions 13 of them, and the 2008 edition mentions another ten. So that's 23 right there, and that's not including some of the bigger acts like Depeche Mode, Tool, Jane's Addiction, Beastie Boys, Lou Reed, and Snoop Dogg.
What the hell are you listening to...2009 Edition - Front Office Football Central |
Indie has now become what alternative was about 1993 or so.

Fitting, since that's about when I stopped listening to new music, only to start up again about a year ago. |
