Got these photos from a neighbor. Here's what it looks like when a funnel cloud drops down and becomes a tornado.......

And here's what it looks like when baseball-size hail hits a plastic table. In summary, the table usually comes out the loser......

You'll love this little addendum. We had my sister-in-law and her husband in town from Baltimore. SIL is from this area, but her husband is an East Coast/New England guy. We went out to take a peek at the tornado as it was still a couple of miles away. He was flipping out. You would have thought the Grim Reaper was in my front lawn staring him down. We went to the basement eventually to be safe, but it wasn't nearly quick enough for him.

This tornado is only a F1 or F2, so relatively small. We had a F4 go within a half mile of our house last year and you could feel the house and ground moving. That's a bit more intimidating. Glad our East Coaster wasn't there for that one.

If the hail did that to the table, what did it do to your roof?!?

The benefits of a steep roof. While it's a bitch to shingle, the steep angle allows the hail to deflect with minimal damage. We did have a neighbor that had a hail stone go through a roof vent. It tore the vent right off the roof and it flew into the attic. The metal was twisted up pretty good.

That is the coolest thing you have contributed to the forum. You will not top this.

You can walk away now.

That reminds me of a story of my wife's from last year, back when we lived in Lawrence. She was with some people from her work at a conference in Albuquerque. They had a little F0 spotted like 20 miles away. Everyone at the conference was freaking out except for the Kansans who wanted to go chase it.

LOL....yeah, that sounds about right.

Yeah.. MMBF is a little closer to tornado alley than I am. :)

Great pics.. btw...

CamEdwards 06-08-2009 12:01 PM

Nice pics MBBF... almost makes me want to go back to Oklahoma for tornado season. It's been at least five years since I've covered one!

Fidatelo 06-08-2009 12:04 PM

I'm confused why I can't see the pics. All I see is file names and sizes.

RainMaker 06-08-2009 12:13 PM

Great pics. Did it damage any of the cars outside?

It's been, gosh, more like 15 years for me but I think those days are over. Last time I tried getting nice & close to one to be first on the scene (had a good pursuit angle, enough daylight for good visibility, minimal traffic between me & it, was working out perfect) I ended up leaving the recorder in the car & helping locals make sure nobody was trapped under what little was left of a couple of mobile homes. Somehow the fun just sort of sapped out of it for me after that. But it can definitely be a hoot if you're in the right mindset about it that's for sure.

Oh yeah. There were very few windshields and back windows that survived if they were outside. Couple that with the dents and there will be a ton of totalled cars in the area. I guess it's a good time to replace one if you have to do so. :)

Some cool pics indeed.
