IGN's Top 100 NES Games

A nice stroll down memory lane. Some of these games I totally forgot about. They're down to 61 right now and there are have been some good ones.

hxxp://www.ign.com/top-100-nes-games/index.html

I'm finding it hard to come up with what I think they're top 5 would be. SMB, SMB 3, Zelda and Metroid have to be 4 of them. I can't think of what the other would be. We'll see!

Big Fo 10-14-2009 10:45 AM

1. Tecmo Super Bowl
2. Super Mario Bros. 3
3. Baseball Stars
4. Super Mario Bros.

PackerFanatic 10-14-2009 10:47 AM

TMNT at 98? That would be much higher on my list, I loved that damn game.

Mizzou B-ball fan 10-14-2009 10:50 AM

Super Mario Bros. has to be #1. That game was to the NES what Wii Sports was to the Wii. Those two systems don't have nearly the success they did if they don't have those crucial pack-in games that highlight the strengths of those two systems.

MJ4H 10-14-2009 10:50 AM

Zelda should be #1.

Lathum 10-14-2009 10:52 AM

Baseball stars was the best. First customizable sports game that I remember

Ramzavail 10-14-2009 11:10 AM

oh man, I've completely forgotten about Cobra Triangle (#68). I used to play the hell out of that game.

I forgot about The Guardian Legend and Legendary Wings. I wonder if they hold the same awesomeness today.

watravaler 10-14-2009 11:42 AM

My favorites:

1. The Legend of Zelda
2. Little League Baseball
3. Anticipation
4. Bases Loaded 1 and 2
5. RC Pro Am
6. Tecmo Bowl
7. RBI Baseball(oh, the tournaments we had, acually had one a month ago!)

spleen1015 10-14-2009 11:46 AM

RC Pro Am is another classic. That game was awesome.

Vince, Pt. II 10-14-2009 12:07 PM

I just fired up my old NES and tested my games. Sadly, River City Ransom doesn't work any more :( A handful of games that I think deserve consideration for the top ten:

Final Fantasy
The Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Brothers
RC Pro-Am
Metroid
Baseball Stars
Tecmo Super Bowl

Terps 10-14-2009 10:15 PM

My faves:

1) Zelda and Link's Adventure
2) Castlevania
3) Mario 3
4) Tecmo Super Bowl
5) Baseball Stars
6) Double Dragon
7) River City Ransom

Terps 10-14-2009 10:16 PM

Dola,

Forgot Contra.

Terps 10-14-2009 10:17 PM

Ahh,

And Mega Man.

mauchow 10-14-2009 10:31 PM

Thanks for giving me a link to an incomplete list!!

Brings back lots of fond memories and it also makes me realize how many games I did not play and how many more I have never heard of.

JS19 10-14-2009 11:01 PM

Tyson?

Vince, Pt. II 10-14-2009 11:56 PM

Obviously personal preference goes a long way in things like this, but the following games are WAY too low on this list:

Tetris
Tecmo Super Bowl
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II
Ninja Gaiden II

I'm also disappointed that they seem to be including every single Mega Man title just because.

spleen1015 10-15-2009 04:14 AM

60-41 is up today.

Damn. They ranked Crystalis way too low. It belongs in the top 20 at least.

Neon_Chaos 10-15-2009 05:43 AM

Is it purely NES or along with SNES?

If it's NES, there is no reason whatsoever why Super Mario Bros. shouldn't be the #1 game. They built an empire around that game.

spleen1015 10-15-2009 08:32 AM

Purely NES

Scarecrow 10-15-2009 12:24 PM

This list is now officially crap...

Tecmo Super Bowl has made the list - AT 53!!!!!!!!

PackerFanatic 10-15-2009 04:54 PM

Wow, I figured at least top 10.

Sun Tzu 10-15-2009 05:33 PM

Dr Mario.

Vince, Pt. II 10-15-2009 07:00 PM

Love that some of my favorite lesser-known games are getting some love - Crystalis and StarTropics specifically were both amazing games. I think Wizards and Warriors deserved a little more love, if only for soundtrack alone. Other than a few notable weird entries (Fester's Quest? Really? That game was terrible), this is so far a pretty impressive list. Games that are more than likely left to come:

Metroid
Super Mario Brothers
The Legend of Zelda
Excitebike
Final Fantasy
Mega Man II (easily the best Mega Man ever for my money)
Tecmo Bowl (though I think Tecmo Super Bowl was better, I can't imagine this not making the list)
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!!
Castlevania
Super Mario Brothers 3
Contra
R.C. Pro-Am

I wonder if the following make the list...

Castlevania III
Super Mario Brothers 2
River City Ransom

+1 billion

53rd? REALLY? I now doubt any of these reviewers even had a NES

terpkristin 10-15-2009 07:14 PM

Fun list. :)
Like seeing Zelda II: The Adventure of Link at 21. I'm very proud to say I beat that one. And speaking of hard games, was also happy to see Battletoads on there, which I don't think I ever beat but I know I got pretty far (level 5 or 6?).
Was happy to see Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers make the list. That was a fun game. Oooh and Qix. I never had it on my NES but had it on the Gameboy.

Still hoping to see Final Fantasy, SMB3 (which I am guessing will be #1), and The Legend of Zelda, and I expect I'll see them all. I would like to see (but probably won't) Marble Madness make the list.

I think they have to give the nod to Super Mario Brothers over SMB3. Even though SMB3 was a huge step up, Super Mario Brothers spawned the entire Nintendo Empire.

It depends on if the list is about best games or most important games.

Vince, Pt. II 10-15-2009 08:21 PM

Bionic Commando might be in there somewhere, too.

That's definitely in my personal top 10. I love the original method of movement.

Radii 10-16-2009 05:25 PM

They've completed the countdown now. I like it. I'd put some games(Baseball Stars) way higher but anything like this is going to be super subjective. Fun walk down memory lane.

stevew 10-16-2009 05:32 PM

RBI Baseball.

Ronnie Dobbs2 10-16-2009 05:33 PM

Damn, I loved Faxanadu! #36. I had no idea it was so little-known.

stevew 10-16-2009 05:51 PM

Ikari Warriors.

terpkristin 10-16-2009 06:07 PM

Hmm forgot about Duck Tales and Dragon Warrior, both were games I loved when I had an NES. :)

Fun list, and is a click-magnet for them, I'm sure.

General Mike 10-16-2009 06:37 PM

Glad to see Tecmo World Wrestling on the chart

Vince, Pt. II 10-16-2009 07:18 PM

Duck Tales being on the list is fine...but at #10 it's a travesty. For a list of 100 though, it's a pretty darned good one.

EDIT - Outside of the random Duck Tales at #10, the top 25 is pretty darned good. I'd slide Dragon Warrior down below Final Fantasy, and swap Tecmo Super Bowl in for Duck Tales, and this list isn't too far off of how I'd do it up at the top. I'm also disappointed in myself that I forgot about the original Ninja Gaiden when predicting the top 20 or so a few posts back.

k0ruptr 10-17-2009 02:22 AM

Duck tales was pretty damned awesome though , IMO.

k0ruptr 10-17-2009 02:22 AM

Dola, but I think you're right, I'd put it in at around 25 or so on my own list.

Tigercat 10-17-2009 08:38 AM

Duck Tales was the best platformer on the NES that wasn't a Castlevania, Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, or Mario. (And considering NES was built on platformers, that means something.)

Thought Tecmo Super Bowl and Dr. Mario were too low. Always surprised when people call StarTropics a lesser known game; Nintendo Power covered the hell out of that game, and back then NP was what determined how well known a game was.
