Thanks for the info. Thankfully we didn't go with a drop-side crib, those seem to be getting recalled all over the place recently...

I read today where dropsides are essentially going to be banned soon.

In our 'baby bargains' book, all the cribs they recommended didn't make dropsides anymore, and I think we'd resigned ourselves to not getting one.

We got a dropside, but I have to say the period of time you actually use the dropside for is pretty small. Assuming you have a crib where you lower the mattress level as the kid gets bigger, by the time he/she is old enough to stand up happily in the crib (and thus represent a falling risk), he/she is standing up and so you're able to pick them up much easier than if they were lying on the mattress.

Of course, people shorter than me (I'm 5'6") may find the dropside still useful. I know we haven't used the dropside in months.

Agreed - we have never had any issues with ours, it seems pretty well put together to avoid something like this. Plus we just took the side off anyway (went to the "big girl bed" *sniff*)
