Octopus Using coconuts!

Its not the zombie apocalypse we have to worry about, its the octopus overlords!

"Bizarre" Octopuses Carry Coconuts as Instant Shelters

Honolulu_Blue 12-15-2009 10:34 AM

I've read about octopi over the last year and what they are capable of in terms of play, intelligence, etc. They have officially been removed from the animals I will eat list.

Drake 12-15-2009 06:29 PM

Octopi weren't on my eat list when I still believed they were dumbasses. I have 5 leg/tentacle/appendage maximum.

JPhillips 12-15-2009 06:30 PM

How wise to have an out for cows with a mutation.

Pyser 12-15-2009 06:31 PM

i ate one that was alive

it stuck to my plate and was salty

thanks for the inspiration, oldboy!

No lobster? Crabs? Calamari?

Groundhog 12-15-2009 06:35 PM

I've seen video of an octopus leaving its tank, making its way across the floor and then into another tank, eat a crab, then climb back into its own tank as if it knew what it had done was wrong, and wanted to look innocent.

This is so great!

And for the record, I had a fried octopus down in Cancun that was positively delicious. Now I want one with coconut cream pie for dessert.

MrDNA 12-15-2009 07:37 PM

Groundhog, I want to see that video! I also love the story about the octopus flooding the aqaurium. Curious Octopus Floods Aquarium

Mischievious little suckers, ain't they?

I'm glad you brought this thread to our attention.

Just imagine if colossal squids started using tugboats for protective shells!?!

SI

The only seafood I'm willing to eat has to be battered, rectangular, deep fried and served with a side of tater tots.

I know, I know, people have spent my whole life telling me that I'm missing out on one of the great pleasures in life with fresh seafood. It's not for lack of trying. My tongue just tries to crawl out of my mouth and throttle me every time.

Who lives in a coconut under the seas?

Seriously I had no idea an octous was so interesting or intelligent.....I have found myself reading more than I ever thought I would care to tonight about octopuses (octopi?)

But I have to ask, where do they find coconuts on the ocean floor.

The swallows apparently dropped them. It was a simple matter of weight ratios.

MikeVic 12-15-2009 11:06 PM

This is so awesome, thanks for sharing.

Groundhog 12-15-2009 11:23 PM

Didn't realise that octopus have such a short lifespan. Mating effectively kills them. With that level of intelligence it's probably a good thing that they don't live for 70 years...

"Oh, yeah, an African swallow maybe, but not a European swallow. That's my point. "

digamma 12-16-2009 09:22 AM

And to think the Octomom used a borrowed nut, yet we called her stupid.

One of these things is not like the others
One of these things just doesn't belong

I don't eat squishy. Of course, for me the real answer is crabs is an exception in the shellfish world. I'll eath fish, and I'll eat crab, but I won't touch pretty much everything else (including lobster, but that's just because I didn't like the taste, not because it makes me sick just thinking about putting it anywhere near my mouth).

Back to the topic, I want more octopus videos.

Apathetic Lurker 12-17-2009 09:56 AM

I need new reading glasses..I was positive it said Octopus Using Condoms

I still think it's cool how he put the lime in the coconut & drank them both up.

molson 12-17-2009 04:32 PM

The awesome thing about the video is that the Octopus doesn't even eat the shark, he just kills it to eliminate it as a threat.

Ya, if these things lived 100 years and could acquire that much more knowledge, etc, they'd pretty much be running things.

And I for one, would welcome the change.

Draft Dodger 12-17-2009 06:02 PM

am I really the only one wondering how the coconut halves got on the ocean floor???

gstelmack 12-17-2009 06:49 PM

Thanks sabotai!
