Spartacus: Blood and Sand on Starz
Supposed to start on January 22nd.
The trailer below and it looks interesting. Kind of looks like a version of HBO's Rome on steroids. |
cool - nice find!
|
A lot of the people behind Dollhouse are supposed to be behind this show.
|
I'm watching it right now and so far I am enjoying the first episode at least. The action scenes remind me of movies like 300 which isn't necessarily my thing but I know others enjoy it. The plot of the movie is kind of a Gladiator knock off, which is fine with me.
My wife's comment was that it seems to be all blood and nudity, which I suppose means it will be a successful show. |
It's already ready to watch instantly on Netflix for those who don't have Starz, but have netflix. I wonder if all the episodes will be up that quick?

Netflix has an agreement with Starz play I believe which means Starz video on demand is available on netflix instantly as well. So I assume each week it will indeed be up there. Just my guess though. |
It's already on mine, came up the day it aired.
|
I thought it was okay...considering they did the big "extended flashback" stuff to set the scene I thought it was about as good as can be expected (although some of the CGI during that was pretty obvious - but since it was a flashback i tried not to let it bother me). The "present day" stuff was cool...I liked the slo-mo application and the blood. And nudity is always good.
I'll keep checking it out to see how it goes. |
I fell asleep at 10:30 on a Saturday night trying to watch this. I thought the acting was horrible, the special effects were really cheap looking, and the plot was incredibly predictable. I was really looking forward to this show too.
|
I'm hoping that it gets better, let's just say that Cam. Like you said, the special effects (the CGI mattes) were pretty "meh" looking. The acting wasn't anything to write home about. Plot (so far) was very predictable, but then again it was a pilot, and typically they're nothing "amazing" - especially given that it was a 60-minute pilot of what is going to be a 60-minute show. They had a lot to cram into it.
I'll give it a couple weeks to see if it improves - primarily because that's my favorite period in history and i really want to like this show. |
I started watching it, and I just couldn't get into it and ended up shutting it off after about 10 minutes. I wanted it to be good, but felt like it was a waste of time.

Needs more bush.
|
So as season finales go, I have to say that was a pretty good one. Talk about not pulling any punches!
I was a little "meh" on this one after the first couple of episodes, but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. It definitely got better as the season went along. Apparently Starz has already renewed it for Season 2, but the lead actor is dealing with a pretty serious illness, so they're going to make a 6-episode 'prequel' next. |
I enjoyed the series also. I tend to like this type of genre though. I could do without some of the graphical depictions that they used (made parts look like the movie 300 with the flying blood, etc), but I enjoyed the series to keep watching further.
I didn't really post much about it because most people here seemed to hate it. I definitely watched it each week while traveling the last month or two though. |
I just couldn't get through the first episode without being bored. It's on Netflix so I may try to give it another shot, I generally love this genre of movies and shows.
|
Dola,
I think it has to do with it not being very era-friendly in my eyes. I hate that some of the actors have guido-haircuts ala Jersey Shore and their uses of modern day swear words always takes me out of the historic element. Maybe I'm just thinking too hard though. |
Jupiter's cock!
|
pretty much all I do is wait for the episode to air and then find screencaps of butts and dongs on the internet afterwards
|
I've enjoyed it so far I guess. I thought there was definitely some good payoff in this last episode (although I missed the first half so I'm not quite sure how Spartacus was able to leverage getting Crixus to help him and turn on Battiatus). Looking forward to seeing where they'll take it now.
|
Just finished Season 1 on Netflix Watch Instantly and Antmeister and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The scandals, the backstabbing... good stuff. I actually liked the blood gushing, slo-mo CGI. You could easily tell with some of the slicing and hacking but it didn't bother me. Looking forward to Season 2.
|
I've watched the first three episodes of Season 2 on Netflix. Still a very enjoyable series.
|
Batiatus is a surprisingly likable character, despite being a conniving power-hungry prick. Good show.

He really makes this series for me, the absurd lines and how he delivers them are great. I'm sad that he was killed at the end of season 1. |
I like the show, but as Nequa pointed out, the constant swearing seems unnecessary. It's annoying to me. Same thing in Deadwood. Just sounds stupid.
But it (cursing) doesn't bother me at all on "The Wire", cuz it seems appropriate...... |

That's how I feel about Ilithya. She should be an annoying character but is very very likable. |
if they could work curse words into the screenshots of butts and dongs, i'd be in heaven squared

he sure likes to discuss the penchant for the gods putting their wieners in peoples bottoms, doesn't he? |
Just wanted to chime in on how much I like this series still. Every episode has at least a couple of things that I like.
|
Sadly, Andy Whitfield has died.
The Associated Press: 'Spartacus' star Whitfield dies of lymphoma at 39 |
Damn.
|
39 is way too young.
|
Fuck cancer.
|
Just got through season 1. Loved it. Looking to see what people here thought of it and find out Whitfield passed a way is very disappointing.
|
just finished up season 1, really enjoyed the final few episodes, especially the season finale. Hopefully season 2 can keep pace, with Whitfield gone and the way season 1 ended, it has to be a whole different show now.

I have to give Spartacus it's due, every time I expected it to fail, it always kicked my ass. Even with my mind struggling to deal with the multiple characters being played by different actors in the third season, it never really falters from it's pace, tone or quality, so if you liked season 1 I think you'll love the rest. Season 2 (1.5?) actually doesn't involve Spartacus at all, and goes back in time, focusing more on the political/social maneuvering of Batiatus and family, but it's tons of fun too, and fills in lots of backstory. |
Not sure who followed this show through to the end, but the series finale was great.
|
I'm on season... 3, I think it is?
|
Quote:
Yeah, there are 3 full seasons of the show, and the half season prequel they made between seasons 1&2. I really enjoyed the series overall. |
I thought it was a great ending to wrap it up.
