Urban Meyer Stepping Down from Florida

Just reported on ESPN during the Meineke Bowl. No details yet, but confirmed by the Florida AD.

GoSeahawks 12-26-2009 05:55 PM

wtf?

tucker rocky 12-26-2009 05:56 PM

Health reasons is the first thing I heard.

MJ4H 12-26-2009 05:56 PM

Yeah just heard that, too. This should get good in a hurry. Off to watch some meltdowns.

Atocep 12-26-2009 05:56 PM

Reportedly health related.

Young Drachma 12-26-2009 05:57 PM

Wow.

Logan 12-26-2009 05:58 PM

I think EF beat me by a few seconds.

Dr. Sak 12-26-2009 06:00 PM

Didn't Meyer check himself into the hospital after the SEC title game?

A-Husker-4-Life 12-26-2009 06:00 PM

WOW.... Do you think he's going to the NFL??

Eaglesfan27 12-26-2009 06:00 PM

Of course, I hope he is ok health wise, but I'm looking forward to seeing the change in the recruiting landscape, particularly with Ronald Powell.

Dr. Sak 12-26-2009 06:01 PM

Yep...

Not a chance.
Health reasons is the cause, will resign after the Sugar Bowl.

Flasch186 12-26-2009 06:06 PM

The Jaguars and they'll draft Tebow. Its just business, baby.

BTW Im no Gator fan.

Go U

M GO BLUE!!! 12-26-2009 06:06 PM

I hate to see the guy go out this way. I do hope he's ok.

However, this creates a seismic shift in the recruiting landscape. The scrambling between now and the 1st Tuesday in Feb will be interesting.

Dr. Sak 12-26-2009 06:13 PM

SportsDigs had this 2 days ago.

Noop 12-26-2009 06:14 PM

???????????????????????????

That is a shocker.

Young Drachma 12-26-2009 06:15 PM

So who replaces him? Meanwhile, Chris Fowler is slurping him now.

Really? Wow. This is huge. I hate the man (as a competitor. Not as a person), but it hurts to see anyone as talented as him have to step away because of health. It has to be something big health-wise (cancer? Heart problems?), because the dude is only 45. I'm just in shock.

Atocep 12-26-2009 06:24 PM

Some are saying it's a heart problem.

Too soon for a Tebow leaving joke?

I think the call list might look like this

1. Bob Stoops
2. Gary Patterson
3. Chris Peterson
4. Kyle Whittingham

Young Drachma 12-26-2009 06:36 PM

I was thinking Patterson too, though apparently he "just signed" an extension. I wonder how dry the ink is. And apparently, Charlie Strong and Urban Meyer couldn't have been particularly close or else, Urban might have said "Hey Charlie, wait a few weeks will ya?"

Dr. Sak 12-26-2009 06:38 PM

Maybe Bowden will apply.

UFA wouldn't have hired Strong anyway. No actual head-coaching experience (except one game as interim coach). They are not likely to even look at coordinators in the position they are in right now.

M GO BLUE!!! 12-26-2009 06:43 PM

I think that Florida should go all-out & do whatever they can do to get a true coaching genius who knows the spread offense as well as anybody who has ever coached.

June Jones probably doesn't fit at Florida

Good try. :)

Edit: You realize if Meyer retired two years ago, Rich Rod would have gotten the Florida job without question.

rowech 12-26-2009 06:45 PM

Why doesn't Tebow just touch him and make him healthy?

Edit: I do realize that, and that if Florida would show interest, Rodriguez would be a fool not to leave Ann Arbor in the rear-view mirror. He could actually have a decent chance for immediate success there.

hhiipp 12-26-2009 06:46 PM

Maybe he's suffering from a broken heart because Tim Tebow is breaking off their bro-mance since he doesn't want a long distance relationship.

My brother just said that when I mentioned what I wrote here.

MrBug708 12-26-2009 06:51 PM

Would Mooch ever come back to coaching?

hhiipp 12-26-2009 06:53 PM

Any chance Tebow takes over as the head coach and Urban Meyer babysits his kids?

MrBug708 12-26-2009 06:56 PM

Bobby Petrino would jump if offered I bet

Noop 12-26-2009 06:57 PM

Muschamp would be perfect for that job.

He isn't going to Florida

M GO BLUE!!! 12-26-2009 07:17 PM

Petrino to Florida

Rodriguez to Arkansas

Mallett to ?

stevew 12-26-2009 07:23 PM

Tony Dungy? He gets to stay reasonably close to home. Plus it gets him off my TV. He also said some stuff about wanting to work with youth. And this is about as good of a job as he can ever ask for.

Eaglesfan27 12-26-2009 07:27 PM

ESPN is now reporting that he has a "heart defect" that is causing him to step down, but that it is not life-threatening at this time.

I think Dungy would be an awesome replacement if he was interested. If not, I think Stoops has to be near the top of the list if not at the top.

tucker rocky 12-26-2009 07:28 PM

Anyone ever think Mike Shanahan gets a call from Florida?

He is a former OC there back in the early '80's.

By leaving, I should've referenced Atlanta.
He left after a 3-10 record.
