2010 Golden Globes

I don't care about the awards, but my roommate is watching and Ricky Gervais is making half the room laugh awkwardly, because they clearly take themselves too seriously.

NBC: The home of awkward TV.

Mike Tyson is there. In a tux and that damn face tattoo. Apparently sitting with the cast of that one movie, The Hangover.

molson 01-17-2010 08:28 PM

I have two observations.

1. This show is moving remarkably fast. Maybe I haven't seen an awards show in a while, but I remember them dragging out and running past midnight.

2. Isn't it kind of strange that acting awards are still separated by gender? I mean, it's not a race, or a boxing match or something.

What would you do, cut the amount of awards in half? I think there's a difference between playing a male character and a female one.

That's true, but I think the male/female difference isn't as great as the drama/comedy distinction (a distinction that the Golden Globes does make but that the Academy awards doesn't).

Big Fo 01-17-2010 10:01 PM

It was funny seeing Tyson up there with all the other guys for the Hangover winning best comedy.

Inglorious Basterds should have won over Avatar.

sure, but what do you do when a male character plays a female, as John Travolta did in Hairspray? Or when a female plays a male, as Cate Blanchett did as Bob Dylan in "I'm Not There"?

If the role is awards-worthy, do you give them the one for the other gender?

MJ4H 01-17-2010 10:21 PM

Reese Witherspoon was smokin

Dodgerchick 01-17-2010 10:23 PM

Does anyone know if this'll be on hulu? I totally missed it. I'm more interested in Gervais than anything.

when isn't she? And yeah, she was.

I'm now prepared to be perpetually disappointed this awards season as Inglourious Basterds and 500 Days of Summer get crapped on, and Sandra Bullock wins.

Seriously, how insulting is it for Bullock to beat Sidibe? When will Hollywood get past this condescending love of white characters saving minorities?

Maybe by tomorrow? Later tonight? He was probably the only consistently entertaining part of the show. It wasn't really a terrible show, as far as awards shows go, but also pretty boring on the whole.

So really, watch his opening monologue and a few other bits of him introducing people and there you go.

Even Michael Oher said he objected to the way the character in the movie was portrayed as too stupid. He refused to elaborate in the NY Times article about him in advance of the Colts game, but...that solidified it for me.

Karlifornia 01-18-2010 02:22 AM

Gervais is hilarious, btw. I will watch him in anything. I even considered ordering that ghost movie off of PPV. British 'The Office' and 'Extras' FTW.

And I really don't think she did all that much in terms of noteworthy acting in it. You could have subbed in a number of other actresses and got equal if not better performances.

I disagree. After watching this movie I was pretty sure that Sandra would win awards on her performance. You can use the "substitute any other actor/actress" argument for most awards. Certain roles are made for award nominations as long as the actor does well. This was one of those roles, and Sandra did played it very well.

ISiddiqui 01-19-2010 12:26 AM

Fucking Avatar wins?! Yeah, it's fun... but best drama? Nah...

His podcast is awesome, too. I didn't know he was hosting, but I might try to find the parts he was in online somewhere.

Ronnie Dobbs2 01-19-2010 08:42 AM

The podcast, incidentally, is being made into an animated show on HBO.

I'd like to accept her globes.

Dr. Sak 01-19-2010 11:46 AM

If her legs are that hairy...you can only imagine what else is growing untamed. I hope that dude has a machete attached to his cock.

miked 01-19-2010 11:48 AM

Thanks to the award show, I am now aware of the existence of January Jones.

ISiddiqui 01-19-2010 12:54 PM

I feel sad for you that you have not been watching "Mad Men"

Monique, who until the movie Precious, was vastly known for playing in crap black based TV shows and movies.

Well, if she was the best female performance, it was a weak year for females.
