Board down - virus anybody?

Looks like I have a worm on my computer and it seemed to happened when the board went down. Anybody else experience any problems or was it just coincidence?

No viruses for me, but yes the board has been up and down all morning.

Actually just had a trojan horse downloaded and quarantined by my virus protection while surfing the board. So, yeah, something is up.

Those usually come from the advertisements, if someone inserts an illegal iframe into those banners it can do that.

Usually using noscript with firefox or some kind of ad banner will often protect you from that occurring. It happens on many internet sites that use banners for advertisements unfortunately.

Ya - I had one of those fake security pop-ups hijack my computer at work yesterday. I actually got it three times, all three times while looking at this board.

It's a pretty nasty bug - it commandeers IE, and tries to shut down your malware programs.

I don't know if anything can be done. But I definitely have to stay off the board at work for now.

Obviously noscript or some other type of protection that blocks iframes usually takes care of 99% of these though. Adblockers are not designed necessarily as security protection so are more hit or miss.

You should practice safe browsing everywhere on the web these days, mainstream sites are infected like this all of the time, so not using protection puts your computer at risk.

Nothing weird for me either on Firefox or Chrome, and i was in the forum when it went down.

molson 04-01-2010 08:58 AM

Ya, I have zero problems at home when using Chrome - but I'm not allowed to install any programs at work, so I'm stuck with IE there (and their obviously crappy security setup at work)

Stupid IT department.

I'm getting lots of PDF download requests from the board. Looks like some worms are being pumped through the advertisements.

That and April 1st is a notorious day for time delay virii. You might have caught it 6 months ago but it's just doing something today.

What are these viruses you people speak of?

I also wonder if viruses are out there that are causing issues with boards today. 3 of my favorite boards have been up and down today. 1 of them is almost never down. In fact, this is the first time I've seen it down for more than a minute or two in a few years.

I got a nasty malware virus from FOFC today. Was pretty pissed about it.
