Best Year for each NFL Team?
I am going to do a league where I take the best years of each NFL team, put them all in a single league together, and see what happens.
Here are the years I am using for each team. Thoughts? Suggestions? AFC East Buffalo Bills 1990 13-3 SB Loss AFC East Miami Dolphins 1972 14-0 SB Win AFC East New England Patriots 2003 14-2 SB Win AFC East New York Jets 1968 11-3 SB Win AFC North Baltimore Ravens 2000 12-4 SB Win AFC North Cincinnati Bengals 1988 12-4 SB Loss AFC North Cleveland Browns 1986 12-4 Conf Champ Loss AFC North Pittsburgh Steelers 1978 14-2 SB Win AFC South Houston Texans 2009 9-7 No Playoffs AFC South Indianapolis Colts 2006 12-4 SB Win AFC South Jacksonville Jaguars 1999 14-2 Conf Champ Loss AFC South Tennessee Titans 1999 13-3 SB Loss AFC West Denver Broncos 1998 14-2 SB Win AFC West Kansas City Chiefs 1969 11-3 SB Win AFC West Oakland Raiders 1976 13-1 SB Win AFC West San Diego Chargers 1994 11-5 SB Loss NFC East Dallas Cowboys 1992 13-3 SB Win NFC East New York Giants 1986 14-2 SB Win NFC East Philadelphia Eagles 2004 13-3 SB Loss NFC East Washington Redskins 1991 14-2 SB Win NFC North Chicago Bears 1985 15-1 SB Win NFC North Detroit Lions 1991 12-4 Conf Champ. Loss NFC North Green Bay Packers 1996 13-3 SB Win NFC North Minnesota Vikings 1998 15-1 Conf Champ. Loss NFC South Atlanta Falcons 1998 14-2 SB Loss NFC South Carolina Panthers 2003 11-5 SB Loss NFC South New Orleans Saints 2009 13-3 SB Win NFC South Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2002 12-4 SB Win NFC West Arizona Cardinals 2008 9-7 SB Loss NFC West San Francisco 49ers 1989 14-2 SB Win NFC West Seattle Seahawks 2005 13-3 SB Loss NFC West St. Louis Rams 1999 13-3 SB Win |
I think the 76 Steelers would be better, because while they didn't win the SB, their defense only allowed 1 TD (and a 69 yard one at that) over the last 9 games (allowing 3.11 ppg during that stretch and 9.9ppg for the season).

Pats 2004 team I feel was better than the 2003 team. You could make an argument for 2007 even though they lost the SB. :)

Ya I wasn't sure what year to grab for them. Almost chose the 2007 team just because that team could probably beat the others. I might change it. |

That was before my time, so I never watched any of those games (born in '74). I just know that a lot of the so-called experts choose the 78 or 79 team. Maybe i'll do two leagues (just for the hell of it), one with each team represented and one with the 32 "best" teams ( or just super bowl winning teams ) which would then leave out the teams that have never really had any teams considered great. Most likely these will be one season leagues and not career leagues. I just thought it would be interesting to see what happens. Of course I would probably turn injuries off and then sim the season several times. |
The 1981 Bengals were actually a more well rounded team. The 88 team had a great run game and Boomer's play action as excellent, but Anderson's 81 squad was more talented overall.
|
Most say the 73 Dolphins team was actually better than the 72 one.

I'd say there's a strong argument that the late-80s/early-90s Eagles teams were better than the 2004 iteration. They just had the misfortune of being in the uber-stacked NFC East.
Also echo the above about the 76 Steelers. Have heard that from players and coaches as well. |
1964 Browns beat the heavily favored Colts 27-0 with Jim Brown, arguably the greatest player of all time. I would put them in over any later version of the team. An Otto Graham-led team from the early 50's is likely the best era for Cleveland, but 50's ball is hard to model in a 21st century game.
1967 Packers, the 'frozen tundra' team, would easily whomp any Favre team. Likewise Lombardi's first championship in 1961, another superior choice. 1957 Lions with Bobby Layne actually won the championship game. Again, hard to get them into a 21st century game. As far as the Cardinals go, 1948 is the best season, but until Jim G gets off his lazy ass and puts in a single wing offense, that isn't going to happen.;) |
I play a lot of historical SP. The 88 Eagles were a great team; check out their roster. Not a good team. A great team.

Interesting. May have to do a bunch of different ones.
