San Antonio trip ideas
 

I'm planning a trip to San Antonio from Dec27-Jan1 and was curious if anyone within FOFC land could help me along in the process. I don't know much about the city but I've heard that the Riverwalk area is beautiful (hopefully this remains true during December). I booked the hotel, flight, and car via Priceline and we will be within walking distance of the Riverwalk at what seems to be a well reviewed hotel. So far Ive made reservations at Chamagaucha for new years eve, bought six flags fiesta tickets, and have started the initial process of pricing lakers vs spurs tickets for the 28th on Ebay. If anyone can chime in on restaurant suggestions, new years eve plan ideas, trip ideas in general, San Antonio weather in December, etc... it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Just back from San Antonio a few months ago - my BFF moved there.

Definitely walk the Riverwalk.

Where'd I go for dinner when I was there...ummm...Bohanan's. It was fucking delicious steaks. High class though...pricey. But man...worth it.

I lived in San Antonio for 3 years and I really wish I could get back there sometime.

Weather in December should be in the 60s during the day and maybe the low-mid 40s at night IIRC.

The Riverwalk, a Spurs game, the Alamo are what I'd recommend checking out. The Riverwalk is a really popular spot for New Year's as well.

If you're a fan of BBQ I strongly recommend checking out Rudy's. Their San Antonio restaurant is the first they opened and it's legendary in that area. If word got out you were going there for lunch where I worked you'd end up with 20 orders.

If you're interested in history at all, their are other missions that aren't as famous as the Alamo but are pretty neat, all within about 15 minutes of each other.

There are several Rudy's, the original one mentioned isn't too far away from Fiesta Texas. It is in Leon Springs, about 5 miles north on I-10.

The Tower of the Americas has a bar and restaurant on top (Chart House, I believe) that has gotten pretty good reviews. I haven't been since the new restaurant opened.

You'll also be in town during the Alamo Bowl. I guess it would depend on the matchup as to if it would hold any interest.

Since you'll have a car, Austin is only a little more than an hour north of San Antonio. So if you run out of stuff to plan, that opens up a whole new set of opportunities.

Not related, but I am in a hotel in San Antonio all day today.

Hopefully the Westin Cantera. That place is awesome.

That would be nice, but we are near the airport in a Crowne. I'm not complaining. Taco Garage was good for lunch.

If you love beer try and make it to Freetail.

My friend took me there. It was tasty!

Also - flying out of San Anotonio is nasty. I flew out to Houston when I was there, and whether it was the winds that day or the short flight which meant "straight up and straight down," or something I ate/drank beforehand (espresso maybe?), that was the only flight in my life that I've ever puked on - and I was tossing it literally right as the plane was touching wheels-down in Houston.

Sucked ass.

My advice would be don't venture much off of the tourist tract.

When I was there we did the Riverwalk, walking from right by the Alamo, and we ventured a block or two off course.

Yeah, not a good idea.

Some of the better Tex-Mex is not found on the Riverwalk. If you have a car and can drive up Highway 281 out past loop 410, Alamo Cafe is great for fajitas and Chuy's has really good enchiladas. A lot of the Tex-Mex food on the Riverwalk tends to be greasier. I also second Rudy's as well. Just don't expect to have plates when eating there and you'll be just fine.

I was in San Antonio a few years ago. The riverwalk was nice but the Alamo was underwhelming IMO.

My mom is a pretty big Catholic so we visited a Christian Missionary museum which was better than I'd thought it'd be.
