The Grammys are on. I didn't realize it until by accident on CBS. Just in case you want to go "wait, what?" A lot...

The Grammys make me feel old

Lady Antebellum shouldn't make you feel old. Bieber? Sure.

It's more the fact that I haven't heard of half the artists performing or up for awards.

What do the Grammys have to do with CDs?

Is Lady Gaga taking the stage dressed in 60 live kittens stapled to her?

I presume most people who buy CDs are the only ones who knew it was on? It was a clever lead-in?

Esperanza Spalding just beat Justin Bieber for best new artist. She's great. Mumford & Sons were apparently also in that category. Which surprised me. They're also great, fuddie duddies.

I thought people gave up on Esperanto years ago.

Looks like they are going for safe picks. Nice to see Patty Griffin win, but even as a fanboy of her music that I am, it's not near her best album.

I figure mp3 lovers are into them, also.

Went to Berklee College of Music at Boston at age 15. Playing upright bass. Graduated at 19. Was named a faculty member at age 21.

She's basically a genius.

I would think so. Most of the Grammy talk I've seen have come from a few Gaga monsters (or whatever they call themselves) that I know on Facebook. Otherwise, it's like buzz free in my world.

Well, she has an album coming out that's she wants to be considered the best album of the decade. No word on what she thinks the rest of her albums in the decade will be like.

So what?

That's nice. Still doesn't mean the resounding response to her win isn't "Who?"

The reality is that she's in a secondary (or tertiary) niche that's about as popular as bluegrass, which on the bright side means she's at least ahead of the rising polka stars of tomorrow.

In the end, it's the Grammy's being the Grammy's. After all, they taught us that Jethro Tull is a Hard Rock/Metal act.

It won't matter. She's a Grammy winner after all.

Kind of weird. The last month there have only been three albums in my cd player in my truck. For the first week it was Mumford and Sons Sigh No More, then for about three weeks it was The Avett Brothers Emotionalism, and then yesterday I finally took it out and put in Bob Dylan Highway 61 Revisited


Buddy texted me earlier asking if I knew a band called Mumford and Sons... gave him standard, "yea, good fucking band." He replied, " Yea. They played with Bob Dylan and some other band that was pretty fucking good, the something brothers."

All I could say was, " .... "

Maybe nobody else finds that cool but I was kind of blown away lol.

I guess I didn't realize winning in the most popular categories were the only ones that mattered.

You'd be hard pressed to get me to go along with "mattered" for any of the Grammy categories. It'll move some units though, no denying that, there's people who will buy anything if you put a big enough sticker on it. But it's still the same record it was the day before.

{shrug} It's something to talk about I suppose, but there really isn't a bigger joke among the award shows than this one.

I remembered why i don't give a fuck about the Grammy's. Arcade Fire is awful, and who in the fuck is Esperanza Spaulding.

Interesting, I didn't even think "Need You Now" was the best country song.

The Suburbs is the one album I flat out couldn't get into despite numerous attempts and on paper I should love the album.

Y'better not say that, somebody will get their panties in a wad ;)

I didn't really like The Suburbs, but someone posted elsewhere that it probably just gave the voters a chance not to vote for hip-hop, country or pop. It was a pretty accessible album though, I guess. And it did grow on me over time, but I'm still partial to Funeral and Neon Bible.


Or not. I was just informing, I don't care what people listen to. It's not ruining my musical experience. It doesn't mean I can't be incredulous about it. Opinions are like assholes...

Watching the Grammys (or any awards show for that matter) is like watching a rerun of The Nanny - there's really no use in purposely watching a show that is going to anger, annoy and confuse the hell out of me.

Maybe it was partly due to my own ignorance, but I swear the Grammys had some credibility back in the day, but they just started to cave to all of the other music award shows that were far far worse. It's still the one I find most credible in terms of quality, but Kathy Perry being up for album of the year pretty much covers how much cred they have these days.

I'm not sure it was credibility as much as we were younger and actually liked some of the acts on the show. And, we were too young/naive/stupid to understand it for what it was. But honestly, the Metallica/Jethro Tull thing ended the innocence for me. But I was also just leaving high school about then, too, so I was growing up.

Now, it's pretty clear that it's just about a bunch of old people who still think they matter to the music business trying to catch up to the flavor of the month as quickly as they can. Some they can't ignore, like Bieber or GaGa, and others they just try to make up for by giving them awards a few years after they deserve them even though their best work is in the past (which seems to fit someone's comment above about Patty Griffin). And then for some, it's like getting a Gold Glove award - once you've established that the music industry loves you, they just keep throwing awards at you until you retire, break-up, or die. And if you die, then you win the lifetime achievement award when you become the next Ghost At Number One.

I recorded this just to see The Avetts and Mumford. I know of one Mumford song that I like, need to d/l more now.

For those that paid attention to the Izulde thread (before it died) know that I LOVE the Avetts. Seeing them live Friday as a matter of fact, which tells you something if you know how little I go to shows.

I hope this performance does them some good. They are an amazing band imo, especially live.

That was freaking awesome! Never thought they'd win and its interesting that I actually own the Album of the Year (well, before it won the award ;)).

I hadn't heard of Esperanza Spalding before last night. Today I listened to a few of her songs on Youtube and they're quite good.

How does the album of the year not win in the subcategory it´s slated in (alternative) ? :confused:

A friend of mine actually sent me a bunch of youtube vids of Esperanza Spalding a week or so ago and i was pretty impressed. Not the type of music i´ll listen to at length but definitely impressive in it´s own right.

What the hell are the Grammys?

Is it a bunch of old ladies congratulating each other?

Maybe The Black Keys were more "alternative" than Arcade Fire? ;)

Listened to 30 seconds of one of their songs. Sounded like Coldplay. Who I equated with U2.

Thanks to YouTube I just heard them for (afaik) the first time. It didn't take 20 seconds for me to think of U2, subsequent clips all went back to the same thing.
Maybe a little lighter weight U2 but everything I heard screamed it, so much so that I was trying to avoid the phrase "knock-off band" here.

Funny you should say that. The only song of theirs I'm reasonably sure I've heard is one I can't recall right now, but was on one of the early Guitar Hero games. On another board, I mentioned that one of the reasons I don't like much of the rock music that's out there these days is (1) I'm old and (2) quite a bit of it seems to be influenced by 80s British pop, which I always hated growing up. Smiths, Cure, U2, Modern English, Joy Division, etc. - hated it all. And I lumped Arcade Fire into that group.

In response, one of their biggest fans on that board posted literally 5 minutes ago that they were basically a cross between David Bowie and U2.

Bowie works a bit better, but also Neil Young. U2 just sounded weird, but it seems like a ton of alternative bands get compared to U2 to whatever reason.

I've never watched the Grammy Awards, but I check in to see if Sevendust ever wins. They never win. I hate the Grammy Awards.
