Greydog announces The Greatest Cape
Grey Dog Software
Adam Rylands next game is definitely a departure from his usual faire but is an intriguing premise. I am very curious to see how he pulls off a text based super hero game. The early FAQ notes some interesting features and you know with Adam the game will be deep.. |
Hmmmm, interesting. Will be looking to see how it's all designed.

And that the first several versions will be clickfests ;) |
I've never really been a fan of the TEW series; I don't like the way the mechanics of the engine work and I've never been able to "get" the gameplay. However, the biggest thing I remember about the series is the almost fanatical way that Adam has crafted a historical continuity for every character in his wrestling simulation and I think that a comic book universe is the perfect setting for bringing that kind of detail to life. If Adam can make the necessary changes to the game mechanics to develop meaningful gameplay, I think the comic book schtick is a brilliant idea.
|
Does he realize that if you say the title fast it sounds like The Great Escape? Glad I could help.
|
The fact that someone is thinking outside of the box in terms of making a text sim makes this interesting to me. If it has any of the elements of those tabletop superhero RPGs I used to play growing up, then this could be a winner.

I'm pretty sure that was in purpose. |

yeah he indicated as much :) |

Thank of it as cardio for your fingers :) |
The user mods made for this game will be fun to keep up with.
|
Interesting.
|
I like the concept, but than again, I liked the concept for ITP as well, but it was much harder to pull off as a replayable game, and it never saw a second generation. I am a big fan of Adam's work all around, and will certainly give it a long look.
|
Adam has started his developers journal on this game now.

Still waiting for Bowl Bound Pro Football.

This seems interesting. I might give it a shot once it is out.

The demo will be released on Monday the 14th of November. This will double as a public beta so that any last-minute errors can be fixed prior to the commercial release. To answer a common question, a working editor is accessible in the demo and can be used by mod makers who wish to start on proposed projects. The demo limitations will be announced on release day only.
The full game will be released on Monday the 21st of November. A small patch will be made available to allow people to upgrade from demo to retail, saving you from having to do two big downloads of the same material. |
Very interested to see how this all comes together....Could be very good, keeping my fingers crossed.
|
I really read it "The Great Escape" the first time.
|
Comes out November 21st.

Oh. I just thought we were all ignoring DeToxRox, not just sachmo. :p

Dowloading the demo now while I listen to Kelly Clarkson.

|
Any screenshots of this things available?
|
I'm intrigued, but I'm also crawling to the demo at 14kb/s....only 2 hours to go!

This one appears to be the quickest mirror, by a wide margin, for whatever it's worth:

give these mirrors a try, downloaded in 18 minutes for me CBH Demo Released! - Grey Dog Software |

Doh, beat me to it |
Adam tried something different this time, rather then a time differential, he broke the combat system and puzzle system so your hero, no matter how powerful is less powerful then Howard the Duck. (that includes maximizing the rolls the opponent gets and they do 10x as much damage and you do 1/10th the damage.. so you get to see how the game works, but you can't really play the game.
Saw enough that I likely will still buy the game, but the demo isn't giving me enough to solidify it. |
Demo has changed in response to that criticism, Foz. Now, combat is ungimped and character choice in the demo is limited.

Good to hear. The gimped combat made it impossible to get a feel for the game. |
Quote:
This is good to hear, the one thing that baffled me with this is that it makes it hard to really beta test combat, since this is what the purpose of the demo release was, to offer one last pre-release beta. Will have to try this again now. |
Tried the demo yesterday and was just about to go over to CBH board to bitch. I'll have to try demo v2 now.
|
Quote:
V2 is much better, as it allows you to experience combat as it will be in the game......Played it some last night, intriguing game, but just seems to be missing something. Definitely not as immersive as WMMA 3 was for me. |
The game is officially on sale for $24.95 right now. You can check the site for download/purchase information:

Damnit, I downloaded the patch, purchased it, it said the debit card I used was declined, but I see the $24.95 charge on my bank.. This sucks and better get fixed.
|
Nah, I'm sure Grey Dog is going to take your money and run.

Interesting concept, but the execution is unfortunately a bit dull right now. I'll try it again when/if the second generation comes out.
|
Reminds me of his TEW series. I love wrestling and I love the idea of being a booker, but I don't love the idea of being the timekeeper guy who counts out each minute of each segment and makes sure it all comes out to a 120 minute show. So much minutia involved, I rarely get past 2-3 months booking before I lose interest.
|
Quote:
Funny you mentioned this, I was just thinking last night how much easier booking TEW would be if you could build all of your matches on a single screen; i.e. Set up ever how many matchups you have for the show, all on one screen, with length, booking notes, etc all accessible via pull down menus. Think of the time saved if you weren't being forced to hop from screen to screen. The problem is not entirely the minutia, it's also the UI that still makes things draggier than they have to be. Still, it's improved considerably from past iterations, but that's damning with faint praise. |
I will note that this game is so much faster than TEW/WMMA sue to a new database Adam is using and that will hopefully make those games quicker as well when implemented.
Still looking for that wow factor here though. The concept is very good, but the demo hasn't drawn me in. Mods are begin worked on for DC and Marvel and I will need to hear feedback on those before I decdie to purchase. |
downloading the demo now...
