If anyone knows how to chat on this thing, would you mind telling me.

gotta go landscape, vertical doesn't show it.

How about comment? I type my comments out but when I hit enter I get a new line, and there's no button to submit comment like on a forum...

Id reset the iPad(home plus power and hold beyond the point that the screen gives you the option to slide for power off). And/or also exit the app, double tap home(brings up the running apps), find Facebook and delete it by holding down on it.

I think both of these actions should force a restart that will likely fix your issue.

Conversely if not, delete the app and reinstall. It's been known to be pretty fn wonky.

(also the safari webpage view of Facebook is really good as well IMO)
