The 2011-12 Winter Storm Thread

Poor East Coasters, some places could see over a foot of snow this weekend. Crazy how early its' going to begin.

Young Drachma 10-28-2011 06:32 PM

Wow.

DeToxRox 10-28-2011 06:37 PM

Eaglesfan27 10-28-2011 06:54 PM

I am shocked that I might see snow this early. It feels good to be home.

SirFozzie 10-28-2011 07:00 PM

AH HATE WINTER! I ESPECIALLY hate winters that start before Halloween.. right now, we're on the good side of the 10-15/2-4 line, let's hope it stays low.

Alan T 10-28-2011 07:02 PM

So uhh.. tomorrow is not a good day for me to have to drive through Springfield?

SirFozzie 10-28-2011 07:03 PM

Is there ever a good day to drive through springfield? But in this case, no. Tommorrow's not the day.

Matthean 10-28-2011 07:08 PM

Late Oct./early Nov. was always a good time for snow back in high school during Cross Country season. It's when the State Finals happened.

JPhillips 10-28-2011 07:22 PM

That dark purple running through NY. Yeah, that's where I live.

Fuck the snow! I've got a play to work on and I'm not about to cancel.

JPhillips 10-28-2011 07:50 PM

More likely I'll give them a call when I'm stranded at the college!

General Mike 10-28-2011 09:44 PM

And I won't get in to work today-ay-ay-0ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay
Cause the snow has shut down half the town.

tyketime 10-29-2011 08:29 AM

Snow here in Jersey! Not sticking, but still crazy as all hell. It's global warming, I tell ya!

Yeah...and I am there too...it's my cheerful sunny disposition that keeps it away. It's the only reason I can explain why it dumped last year every time I was out of town :)

You say this like you're not a believer...but you do understand that due to the melting of the polar ice releasing more moisture into the atmosphere and the changes in weather patterns that brings, that's exactly what this is.

Apathetic Lurker 10-29-2011 09:07 AM

Thank God I live in Buffalo, place of mild winters

Suburban Rhythm 10-29-2011 10:03 AM

Pittsburgh has maybe 1". Its been snowing since about 3a, but it's approaching upper 30s. So it's falling and melting.

I miss the Jersey winters. It doesn't snow much in Seattle and when it does people turn into bigger morons that they already are. I love winter.

Passacaglia 10-29-2011 11:07 AM

People here in Chicago are eating outside. :)

Suicane75 10-29-2011 11:34 AM

I'm smack dab in between Trenton and Philly and it started snowing here a good 6 hours earlier than forecast. It's heavy and it's piling up. I think this one could turn out to be pretty major. My only hope is that there isn't a sustained problem with outages but the branches are already coming down.

JPhillips 10-29-2011 01:08 PM

Because it's so wet and the flakes are large it looks terrible here. It's only now starting to stick to the roads, but if it snows like this for the next twelve hours we'll easily break a foot.

Peregrine 10-29-2011 01:11 PM

Man I hate Winter Creep - I blame all these stores that are starting to sell Christmas stuff so early - now the snow is coming with it.

I would be one of those. So many trees down everywhere they say it might be days before we have power back. This snow pretty much finished off every tree in the neighborhood that was damaged by the hurricane this summer

jeff061 10-30-2011 08:00 AM

Thankfully no power issues here.

Suicane75 10-30-2011 08:32 AM

This is what came crashing down literally right over my head at about 2pm yesterday. The tree is blocking the window which is exactly where I was sitting at the time. And this is after my neighbor and I drug it back about 2-3 feet. We abandoned removal because A) It was heavy and B) As we were doing it we saw 3 other large branches come crashing down around us. Not a winter wonderland.

Alan T 10-30-2011 04:18 PM

Massachusetts looks like a bomb went off. This is far crazier than the hurricane damage and some people in town had no power for a week after that. Driving through town trees are everywhere, power lines are down all over the place. Every other street is closed to detours from the storm.

National grid is saying four days before the area gets power back. This really is going to make a mess for the kids tomorrow night. You can't trick or treat without any power anywhere. Just not safe at all. So we might end up taking the kids to the closest town with power for halloween.

jeff061 10-30-2011 04:27 PM

Wow, I haven't even gone outside. Looking out my window I'd never have guessed it's that bad.

How's the NYC/CT area, anyone?

JPhillips 10-30-2011 08:25 PM

Just got power back after about 30 hours.

ouch. so how much snow did you get?

JPhillips 10-30-2011 08:39 PM

I don't have any idea, but I'd guess anywhere from 9-12". It snowed like hell for a couple of hours before anything stuck and it was melting as it fell. I don't think there was ever more than five or six inches on the ground, but we definitely got more snow than that.

Places that saw the morning sun today were completely free of snow by 2 pm. Crazy storm.

edit: Weather.com has New Windsor at 11.5"

sterlingice 11-08-2011 08:13 PM

Do we have any Alaska members? That storm looks amazing- it looks like a hurricane but with snow. Pressure is around 28.00 inches and 80 mph sustained winds. That's just nuts to think about it with so little heat but still having so much energy

DeToxRox 11-08-2011 08:25 PM

Are the Crab fisherman out right now? If so, I'd expect this storm to be featured heavily on the new season of Deadliest Catch. Looks insane.

I don't think they are, IIRC they are usually out towards the start of the year. I was just down by the locks yesterday and saw several of them docked.

sterlingice 01-12-2012 06:57 PM

(Finally found this thread. No one had really had winter since that quick little blast in November and that snowstorm in the plains in mid December)

WINTER, I HATE YOU!
