Hit It For Six (an interactive cricket dynasty)

I've been inspired to write this dynasty in no small part due to the excellence of the Give Rugby a Try thread.

It will track the progress of a one-day cricket league in that most unlikely cricketing nation - the United States - using a very basic cricket simulator that I found on the net called "CRICSIM".

There will be a lot of lexical jargon in this thread that may bemuse or befuddle the majority of readers. As a starting point, I suggest you look here to start your education.

I have already played out the first two seasons of this dynasty, but it will go on the back-burner very soon for about three weeks due to me travelling overseas for holidays (talk about bad timing). Still, I'd welcome any feedback, suggestions, comments or questions that you may have.

As the title suggests, this is an interactive dynasty. If you would like to enter the rookie draft for Season III please let me know (also stipulate whether you'd like to be a batsman, bowler, or both. As per "Give Rugby A Try", FOFCers will be among the pre-eniment players).

Now to fill in some of the backstory of this league. There will be no "real" players, as I intend this story to be timeless (hence "Season I, Season II etc"). Players typically start in the league between the ages of 18-21, and will begin to retire from as early as 30. Teams will have a bare squad of 11 players. There will be no injuries, so every player will play every game for their team, regardless of form.

Now to attempt to explain a fraction of the rules of cricket.

The main form of cricket can last up to five days, often without a result being known (a "draw"). One-day cricket, which this dynasty is modelled on, lasts for exactly that amount of time - a single day. Each team is given a maximum of fifty overs to score as many runs as possible without being "bowled out" - losing ten of their eleven batsmen to dismissals.

Team scores in cricket typically vary between 200-300. If the team batting second surpasses the first team's score, then the game is over. If the first team "bowls out" the second team without having their score passed, then the game is also over. If neither team is bowled out after fifty overs, then their innings is closed. A tie occurs if two teams score exactly the same amount of runs.

There are two basic roles in cricket - batting and bowling. A good batsman will average anywhere from 35 runs per game upwards. A good bowler will average 25 runs or less per wicket that he takes. In addition, one day cricket takes into account the scoring rate of both batters and bowlers. A good batsman will score 75 runs or more per 100 balls that he faces (a 75% strike rate). A good bowler will concede 4.5 runs or less per six-ball "over" that he bowls (a 4.5 economy rate).

I sense that I may have confused most of you already with these explanations, so lets delve into the fiction of this dynasty.

The United Cricket League (UCL)

The UCL currently consists of eight teams in two divisions which play a 26-game schedule. Teams play their three divisional opponents six times, home and away, and play the teams in the opposition division twice.

Currently the top two in each division qualify for the playoffs. The playoff series is a straight knockout, with the winner of the best-of-three advancing to the championship series, another best-of-three. Home field advantage for the entire series is given to the team with the better season record.

Teams tied in standings are sorted by their head-to-head record, then their divisional results, then by the result of their most recent game.

The eight charter members of the UCL are:

Notes from Season II

1. Batsmen dominated the fledging UCL in its second full season, with the total of runs increasing markedly, and number of wickets falling. The highest individual score of the season was a mammoth 222 not out by Robbie Nilsson of LA, beating the previous best of 195 not out set by Malcolm Wagner (Las Vegas) earlier in the season.

2. The number of centuries (individual scores of 100 or more) rose from 52 in Season I to 98 in Season II.

3. The instances of bowlers taking four wickets or more in a match fell from 47 to 38.

4. Dallas's first pick of the draft was Oliver McCallum, who went on to become an absolute phenom in his first season, scoring an average of 96.06 runs each time he batted. McCallum also broke the record for most centuries in a season (10, shared with Malcolm Wagner who also broke the record).

5. Quality all-rounders (players who are good at both batting and bowling) are few and far between in the UCL but Josh Wallace was the standout performer by far. The Gamblers star scored 1624 runs with the bat and also took 23 wickets. Other worthwhile contributors included Connor Attwood of Florida (batting average of 24.6 with 45 wickets), Jake Sutton of DC (batting average of 33.7 with 39 wickets) and James Deacon of Florida (batting average of 22.3 with 37 wickets).

6. Las Vegas hit on a good prospect in the draft with Michael Jones. Drafted seventh overall (Florida passed on their picks), Jones went on to take 58 wickets with the ball at a misely average of 20.1 (the lower the bowling average is, the better).

7. Oliver McCallum and Michael Jones were named the UCL Young Players of the Year. The award is given to the best batsman and best bowler under the age of 21. McCallum becomes the third Mustangs player to win the award after Dane Torgersen and Connor Attwood both won the award in Season I.

8. McCallum was a close second for UCL Most Valuable Batsman but ultimately lost out to Malcolm Wagner of the champion Las Vegas Gamblers. Also pressing a strong claim was Christian Joseph of the Chicago Barons. Wagner is the second Gambler to win the award after captain Sam Hill did so in Season I.

9. Kyle Watts of the Chicago Barons was a close winner of the UCL Most Valuable Bowler, edging out team-mate Ben Hall, who joined the Barons after spending the first season with the New York Emperors. Hall's former team-mate Matthew Baldwin was the first recepient in Season I.

10. Retirements will shortly be announced, followed by Trade Weekend, where team managers meet to discuss potential trades ahead of the draft.

11. The draft order for the Season III draft has been established:
  • LA
  • NY
  • PHX
  • PHX (from DC)
  • FLO
  • DAL
  • CHI
  • LSV
  • LA
  • NY
  • PHX
  • DC
  • FLO
  • DAL
  • CHI

The draft will consist of two rounds, after which players will be cut from rosters and claimed off waivers by any teams who do not have the full roster of 11 players. Phoenix have DC's pick in the first round due to a trade made before last year's inaugural draft.

Intruiging... although I can't seem to find the simulator you're using. Any clue as to its whereabouts?

Rawhide 12-14-2011 03:59 PM

Try CricketGames.com - Welcome and then look under "freeware games". It should be called Cricsim or The Cricket Simulator.

Awesome!

So.....does anybody want in on the draft?
I'll need to know your name, and whether you want to be a batsman, bowler, or all-rounder. I'll probably run the draft in the next 48 hours or so.

Sure, Throw in Deacon Palmer as a bowler

Thanks for the responses so far everyone. Just putting together a retrospective for retiring players - all ten of them - before doing player transactions.

The Off-Season - Phase 1 - Retiring Players

At the end of UCL II, ten players announced their retirements.

Aaron Case hung up his gloves as wicketkeeper for the DC Vulcans. He retired with a batting average of 23.88 and a highest score of 68.

Callum Rofe made his mark as one of the better bowlers strutting their stuff for the Phoenix Scorpions. In his 54 matches he took 104 wickets at a cost of 21.75 runs, or one wicket every 28.8 balls (anything under 35 is considered good, under 30 is excellent). He also took four or more wickets in a match seven times.

Calvin Christensen's contributions for Chicago are best forgotten.

Doug Ross played a decent first season for Chicago before being instrumental in Dallas's rise to the West Division finals last season. In his 54 matches he scored 2074 runs at an average of 54.58. His contributions with the ball were less stellar but he still managed to take 25 wickets.

Gerald Amico was an important contributor in the Florida Storm's first two seasons, with 2243 runs, an average of 41.98 and seven centuries (scores of 100 or more) in 57 matches.

Much like Doug Ross, Henry Elliott was a factor in the Mustang's rise to the finals in Season II. The recruit from New York finishes his career with a batting average of 47.75 and nine half-centuries. His opportunities to score more runs were overshadowed by the mammoth efforts of team-mates Dane Torgersen and Oliver McCallum.

Kyle Watts finished his career with a loss in the Championship Series to Las Vegas, but the Chicago bowler can still feel happy with a career that netted 91 wickets, including 61 in Season II alone. His career bowling average was 24.86 and strike rate of 34.1.

Luke Russell retires from Dallas with 2360 runs in the bank and 5 centuries, 16 half-centuies and a highest career score of 139 not out.

Sam Hill is probably the best batsman in the short history of the UCL, and a huge factor in the Gambler's early successes. In 60 matches, he has scored 3548 runs, 13 centuries and 8 half centuries. Together with Patrick Song and Malcolm Wagner, Hill was one of the "big three" that obliterated opponent's bowling in Season II as the Gamblers won 28 of 30 matches.

Wayne Connolly won a championship with Las Vegas in his first season, before finishing his career with Florida, scoring 1649 runs with an average of 56.86 runs.

Only four trades were agreed upon in the Trading Weekend, down from a record 12 last season.

Dallas were involved in every single trade, approved by the UCL Commissioner, Jack Schitt.

Dallas gets: Frank Gallagher (30 yo batsman, average 50.65) and Harvey Underwood (24yo bowler, average 86.57)
Chicago gets: Fletcher Deck (34 yo batsman, average 37.8) and Jayden Moen (31yo bowler, average 130.3)
Analysis: Dallas wins this trade hands down and it's difficult to see why Chicago agree to it. Moen will more than likely be released on waivers after the draft anyway.

DC gets: Mark Norman (22yo bowler, average 41.32)
Los Angeles gets: Drew Staggers (35yo batsman, average 58)
Analysis: Los Angeles gets batting support for Robbie Nilsson, who has carried the franchise for the first two season of the UCL. DC get a promising prospect who has suffered badly at the Knights. Staggers becomes the first player to play for three clubs in the UCL after spending Season I at Phoenix.

DC gets: Round Two pick in Season III draft (14th overall)
Dallas gets: Steve Graves (28yo all rounder, average 11.57 with bat, 34.55 with ball)
Analysis: Probably a dead-even trade. Graves has underperformed with the bat and ball in two seasons with the Vulcans, and DC now gets a second pick in the draft, which they badly need.

Las Vegas gets: Round One pick in Season III draft (6th overall)
Dallas gets: Round One pick in Season III draft (8th overall), Round Two pick in Season III draft (16th overall)
Analysis: Another head-scratcher. The Gamblers live up to their name but have squandered one pick just to move up two places.

Team managers, scouts and players convened in Las Vegas for the Season III draft, with three names on everyone's lips - Neilsen, Palmer, Bafou. These three prospects had impressed everyone at the first official UFC Prospects Game. Rob Nielsen retired on 100 not out, while Deacon Palmer bowled with amazing accuracy, taking three wickets. Jawouk Bafou was the wildcard, hitting fifty runs in a scorching thirty balls, while taking two wickets with the ball.

With trading during the draft prohibited, teams like Phoenix and New York were guaranteed to have more than the mandated eleven players on their rosters, while teams such as Chicago would have less. This would set up an intriguing period post-draft with players going on waivers.

Draft Results

1. Los Angeles - Deacon Palmer (bowler)
2. New York - Jawouk Bafou (all-rounder)
3. Phoenix - Josh Gibson (all-rounder)
4. Phoenix - Shannon Happel (batsman)
5. Florida - Rob Nielsen (batsman)
6. Las Vegas - Ryan Menendez (bowler)
7. Chicago - Stanley Leto (batsman)
8. Dallas - Scott Gibson (batsman)

UCL Announces Changes in Playoff Format

UCL Commissioner Jack Schitt announced today that the playoff format will change for Season III onwards, with six teams qualifying for post-season action.

The top team in each division will qualify for the Divisional Finals as per usual, but now the next best four teams in the UCL will play in a single qualifying match, to be termed the "play-in". The third best team in the UCL regardless of division will host the sixth best team, while the fourth best team will play the fifth best team.

The winners of the "play-in" will then play in the division final, against their own division champion if applicable. However, if three teams from the same division qualify for the Division Championships, then the team that finished first in their division will choose their opponent.

Using last year's standings as an example, Chicago and Las Vegas would earn a direct passage to the division finals, while Dallas (3rd) would host Phoenix (6th), and Florida (4th) host DC (5th). The winner of Dallas-Phoenix would play Las Vegas, the winner of Florida-DC would play Chicago.

The change in playoff format is rumoured to foreshadow possible expansion in Season IV. The regular-season schedule format of 26 games is unchanged.

Okay, sometime in the next 12 hours I am going to try and simulate the season, giving brief score summaries for matches, and detailed performance summaries for our three FOFCers. I don't think I will have the time to delve into serious storylines - a major feature of the NARC dynasty - so my apologies for that, but this dynasty will be going on ice until around January 10 due to my international travels.

And with that out of the way, let's get the show on the road.

No, sandstorms aren't a regular feature of CRICSIM. The error occured twice when simulating Dallas-Phoenix games. I think there may have been an error with not enough bowlers for either side. A little editing means this should not be a problem from now on. The results stand however.

UCL announces expansion, changes for Season IV
In the annual owners meeting it was resolved unanimously that the United Cricket League would expand to ten teams for Season IV. There would also be a change in the competition structure from a regular season of 26 games to 30 to account for the increased number of sides.

Locations thought to be in contention for new UCL franchises include Houston, Atlanta, Cleveland, Boston, Denver and Seattle. A final decision on locations would be made in the following days, UCL Commissioner Jack Schitt announced today.

Each of the eight current UCL franchises agreed to allocate three players each to an expansion draft pool, with the two new franchises making eight picks each. The new franchises would then pick third and fourth in the Season IV Draft. Three rounds of the draft would be held, with a record thirty rookies up for grabs.

---

Okay, this is up and running again. Albeit at a far more leisurely pace.
This is first and foremost an interactive dynasty, so any feedback would be welcomed.
If you would like to nominate for the Season IV Draft let me know.
Also, some input on the two new expansion teams and their names would be great!

Izulde 01-12-2012 10:14 PM

Utterly unrelated to this thread (sorry!), when we will see new RL rugby exploits, sir?

Rawhide 01-12-2012 10:38 PM

Haha. Probably not again, I've transferred out of the district that I was managing in. We never got that win.

Furthermore, about a year ago I went back to the Cattledogs thread and deleted most of it, on the off-chance that someone from the RL world discovered it. Even though I changed names, places etc I don't think the people in the story would be pleased if they found it (however unlikely)!

I have been toying with the idea of a FM2011 dynasty written in the same first-person fly-on-the-wall style however. Maybe.

Vulcans bite the dust; cricket leaves Washington after three seasons
In a shock decision, the owners of the DC Vulcans today announced the dissolution of the franchise and termination of all player contracts.

A spokesman for the UCL Commissioner's office noted that the Vulcans players had not been paid for the previous season, and had even been forced to make their own transport arrangements for their play-in final against Phoenix.

Plans are underway to hold a player dispersal draft, although the timing is complicated with the announcement of two new UCL franchises within the week.

"This really leaves the UCL in a bind," claimed commentator Wayne Bain.

"They will want to keep the number of teams even, otherwise the schedule will go right out of the window with one team given a bye each week. Also, the number of division games will become uneven, and that would advantage or disadvantage teams across the league."

The most likely option is that expansion will be scaled back to one team for Season IV.

Vulcans players were not available for comment.

Dispersal Draft sees former Vulcans find new homes
The UCL hastily held a dispersal draft for the former DC Vuclans players. Conducted by teleconference, UCL Commissioner Jack Schitt laid down the following conditions for the draft:

1. Current UCL teams would select playes in reverse order of the previous season.
2. If a team passed on a selection, they forfeited all future selections.
3. Each selection would cost a draft pick. One selection would cost a third round pick, two selections would cost a second round pick, three selections would cost a first round pick.

After hearing of these conditions, only three of the UCL teams actually participated in the selection of players; last-placed Los Angeles took the former Vulcans captain Curtis Rose with the first overall pick, giving the team some badly-needed help in the batting department. The other teams to select were the Emperors and Gamblers, who contested last year's Championship Series.

The results of the dispersal draft were as follows:

1. Los Angeles - Curtis Rose
2. Las Vegas - David Mackenzie
3. New York - Bennett Osbourne
4. Los Angeles - Mark Norman
5. Las Vegas - Al Brittain
6. New York - John Porter
7. Las Vegas - Gary Parks

Jake Sutton, Steve Graves, John Stout and Albert Marsh were not selected and will become available for the Expansion Draft.

Las Vegas have forfeited their first round draft pick, while Los Angeles and New York both forfeited their second round draft picks.

Seattle, Boston and Atlanta join the UCL

The UCL made the surprise announcement today that they were sticking to plans to expand the competition to ten teams for Season IV after all, with Seattle, Boston and Atlanta given the green light to participate in the expansion draft.

The plan was adopted by the remaining seven inaugural UCL franchises but not without some compromise, with expansion now firmly off the competition's radar for some foreseeable time.

Furthermore, the "Original Seven" will now give up four players for the Expansion Draft. Any player who is not drafted by either Seattle, Boston or Atlanta will return to their team. If a team has less than eight players remaining after the Expansion Draft, they will be given a compensatory pick, to be used after the second round of the draft.

Seattle won the right to pick first in the draft, while Boston will pick second ahead of Atlanta. The order will not change throughout the eight rounds.

Seattle will be known as the Ospreys, Atlanta have gone for alliteration and will be called the Aces, while the Boston club have gone for a nautical theme with their name of the Admirals.

The list of players nominated for the Expansion Draft are as follows:

Chicago
Christian Joseph

Trade Weekend

Seven complex trades were agreed to during the annual trade weekend conference, held this time in Boston as the city prepared to participate for the first time in the UCL.

After losing in the Championship Semi-Final series, the Chicago Barons were by far the most active team, shifting five players and three draft picks, as they enter rebuilding mode.

Another intriguing actor in the market were the Los Angeles Knights, who made a net gain of two players but gave up their coveted number one pick to do so. Time will tell whether the moves were the right ones for the team that finished 4-22 in Season III.

After gaining three former Vulcans players, Las Vegas promptly traded all of them away, picking up two of the better young bowlers but only holding one draft pick - the twenty-ninth.

Phoenix, Atlanta and Boston by contrast made no moves.

The Moves in Detail

Las Vegas gets: Jason Cross and Bennett Osborne, third round pick
New York gets: Wesley Teague and Al Brittain, third round pick
Verdict: Even
Analysis: Last year's two champions trade two of their better bowlers each. New York maybe have the better bowlers out of the deal but Las Vegas will provide the better batting support.

Chicago gets: Ryan Forbes, third round pick
Los Angeles gets: William Jones, Stanley Leto, third round pick
Verdict: Favours Los Angeles
Analysis: The Knights get Chicago's two best young batsmen, and give up comparatively little in return.

Chicago gets: Dane Torgersen, third round pick
Dallas gets: Tim Watts, third round pick, future conditional pick
Verdict: Dallas wins in the long term
Analysis: Torgersen was the Mustangs' best bat, however the addition of the conditional pick outweights the evenness of getting Watts. The second round pick turns into a first if Chicago makes the championship semi-finals, and two firsts should they advance to the championship finals.

New York gets: Rob Nielsen
Florida gets: Jayden Fenton, Danny Lapierre, first round pick
Verdict: Even
Analysis: The potential is there for Florida to benefit greatly. Although they have given up their gun Nielsen, they get two solid performers as well as a second pick in the first round. New York get one of the best rookies of Season III to pair with their "beast" Jawouk Bafou. The East is theirs to lose.

Chicago gets: Jack Jackson, third round pick
Florida gets: Timmy Tisch
Verdict: Evenish
Analysis: Chicago gets the better player, however they will set bowler Jackson up for failure by trading away get another batter.

Chicago gets: David Mackenzie, Gary Parks, third round pick
Las Vegas gets: Peter Riordan
Verdict: Las Vegas
Analysis: Again the Barons get duped in a trade. Mackenzie and Parks weren't even the Gamblers' players to start with (they were Vulcans), and the Barons give away a bowler who has taken 114 wickets in the past two seasons. Bad, bad move.

Los Angeles gets: Brady Vasko, Mark Woodard
Seattle gets: first overall pick, Mark Norman
Verdict: Seattle
Analysis: A puzzling move. The potential is that Vasko and Woodard will bolster the Knights lineup. The reality is that the first overall pick would have done that anyway. Furthermore, Norman took 55 wickets in two seasons in a terrible LA attack. The potential was there for him to take as many in Season IV alone.

The trades have resulted in this final draft order. The Ospreys have two of the first five selections, while the Storm also pick twice in the first nine selections. The Barons have five picks - the most of any team - while the triple-champion Gamblers will make only one selection, the very last one.
