The Christmas Bonus Thread

Got a $50 gift certificate to Applebee's. It's not even a membership to the Jelly of the Month Club.

OMFG.

Logan 12-23-2011 11:45 AM

The least they could do is Chili's. I'd rather have $50 worth of Southwestern Egg Rolls than $100 cash.

larrymcg421 12-23-2011 11:46 AM

Ha ha ha ha "Christmas Bonus" ha ha ha ha. You guys kill me!

We all got sweater vests with company logo on it. Same as last year. How many does a person need?

Jim Tressel thinks you need at least 7 of them - one for each day of the week.

RomaGoth 12-23-2011 11:52 AM

Dola

Received a $100 Amex gift card from my employer. Wife and I used it to go out to dinner the other night.

Got to avoid the layoff reeper for another week!

chadritt 12-23-2011 12:04 PM

2 weeks of unpaid vacation, unless I wind up having to work 2 days over the break like I think I will, a $20 bottle of wine, and a candy cane. Thats actually a good haul compared to most years.

cuervo72 12-23-2011 12:12 PM

Move your hand, Beverly.

digamma 12-23-2011 12:14 PM

Oh, Sparky.

Fidatelo 12-23-2011 12:33 PM

Our bosses are pretty generous, they go to Future Shop and load up on stuff, then we take turns choosing a gift at the x-mas party. This year we could choose from: Xbox, PS3, Tassimo coffe maker + 8GB iPod touch, Dyson hand-held vacuum, flying helicopter gizmo, 32GB iPod touch, or some kind of fancy headphones and surround speakers.

I chose close to last this year, so a couple of options were gone. Since I have 2 kids and a big furry sheep dog, I went with the Dyson.

I am working for a great company now. Every employee (over 6,000) got a 800 dollar bonus for the holidays and the docs got considerably more. Working my tail off, but this is my best job ever (and being back at home is great.)

stevew 12-23-2011 12:43 PM

I got a rock

And get to work Xmas Eve!

Draft Dodger 12-23-2011 12:44 PM

Congrats EF27. Didn't know you moved from Louisiana.

No bonus this Christmas, just started a new job at the beginning of the month. Did get a steak dinner from my last company at their Christmas dinner. Guess that's my bonus...

MacroGuru 12-23-2011 12:56 PM

I take my +1 back...

We had a team party last night at a cool little bar and the company paid for all the alcohol.....combined with our work party 2 weeks ago with more free alcohol....Work sufficiently paid for me to get my drink on twice this month.

Honestly found out yesterday that the other rep and myself helped the company break even for the first time in 4 years. We shattered their expectations for us in the first four months.

Seriously.

heybrad 12-23-2011 01:13 PM

First time in 4 years that I didn't get a bonus.

molson 12-23-2011 01:37 PM

We had a Christmas party, but had to pay to attend. So the bonus was kind of the effort of the employees who put together the party.

sabotai 12-23-2011 01:45 PM

I'm going to Atlantic City for New Year's Eve, so for me "Christmas Bonus" = "Money I will spend on booze and gambling."

DanGarion 12-23-2011 01:52 PM

We stopped getting Christmas bonuses about 10 years ago and even then we were lucky to get a $25 gift card for a grocery store at my company. But my wife and I give each of our employees at the Dog Grooming shop we own a $100-200 bonus each year.

Sublime 2 12-23-2011 01:52 PM

We actually did pretty well this year as a company, and in turn the board was generous. 2 weeks worth of pay for a bonus.

We have this too...and I've not attended the 2 years I've been here.

You can pay in $10 a month and go for "free" at the end of the year. Or pay the $120 to go in December.

My wife is a nurse, and we never know the weekend of the party or her schedule until about a month in advance, so I can't really pay in advance, and if I am spending $120 to go out, I'd rather my wife and I go out on our own, rather than a company party.

Right there with you on this one.

bob 12-23-2011 03:51 PM

I work at a large company that had 10% growth this year. Our bonus was a "no pay raises in 2012" email.

lighthousekeeper 12-23-2011 03:54 PM

now that i'm self employed, the days of holiday bonuses are gone.

Buccaneer 12-23-2011 04:21 PM

We did a secret envelope-trade type of deal. Got a nice gift card for Chipotle, which I used all this week. Also got a gift card for our local indie ice cream store. Chipotle and ice cream is an unbeatable combination.

CrimsonFox 12-23-2011 04:24 PM

FOr my bonus I got...oh wait I still don't have a job outside the santa stuff. which ends today

Dutch 12-23-2011 04:35 PM

Lots of time off....I'm working no more than 4 hours per day for 2 weeks with 4 federal holidays and two free off days...govt doesn't really give out holiday bonuses so this works great for me.

Drake 12-23-2011 04:47 PM

My boss took us all to lunch o his own dime.

I work in the public sector, so any sort of bonus is a taxpayer no-no. The fact that my boss is willing to shell out the cash to take the whole department to dinner every year (when he's got 8 kids at Xmas!) never fails to touch me.

Yellow5 12-23-2011 04:56 PM

I work for the State of Washington so no bonus. GF works in a large attorneys office and she got lots of booze and $100 gift certificate to Nordstroms. Pretty sure I can steal the booze from her while she isn't looking and pretend it's my bonus.

terpkristin 12-23-2011 05:03 PM

My company has a standard bonus for all people who have worked there for over a year.

Usually, program managers in my business area give bonuses to the program management team, but my current program manager does not. He prefers to defer all bonuses until the end of the build, test, and launch campaign. I'm OK with that (though I can see that it's also kind of dick-ish).

My current program is under a bit of a disaster so we'll have to work every day this holiday season except Christmas Day and New Years Day. We'll be able to bank the holidays to be used in the next quarter, though. Luckily the lead engineer on the program and I back eachother up pretty well, so I'll be able to take tomorrow (Christmas Eve) to spend with my family (Christmas Eve is a significantly bigger deal in my family than Christmas day).

All in all, though it sounds like a lump of coal, I'm OK with it. The office should be pretty quiet next week, so I'll be able to get some other work I've gotten behind done as well. I'll definitely be at work on Monday and Tuesday but am hoping to spend more time with my family on Wednesday-Friday.

Dola,

One of my coworkers got a 12-year old bottle of scotch from one of his bosses. It was more of a personal gift. My friend did the barcode lookup on it and saw that it usually sells for ~$140. He was stunned.

I got all but one of my employees a screaming monkey (or a chicken, pig, or cat). They liked them. The one that didn't get anything has been a problem child this past year and could've cared less when I got him his present last year.

On the receiving end, I received a few gifts from some co-workers. Nothing big, but probably more meaningful than a gift card.

What does that mean? :)

+1 that you received a 12 year bottle of scotch that cost $140 or +1 that you're stunned?

Giving or receiving a bottle of scotch deserves a +1 in my book. That is a great gift for any occasion. ;)

CleBrownsfan 12-23-2011 05:43 PM

As an owner I gave my employees a weeks pay bonus. I usually try to give them a weeks pay - I think the only year I wasn't able to was in 2009.

lungs 12-23-2011 06:05 PM

I gave my employees $50 or $100 bonus.

My own bonus? I survive to farm another year.

jeff061 12-23-2011 06:21 PM

I have never gotten a mentionable bonus. I left the one job that would have given me 10% a month before Christmas.

Butter 12-24-2011 09:33 AM

$100 grocery store gift card.

Of course, my annual bonus of 10% of my salary is due in February, and we are close to hitting our company goal of 10% revenue growth, so I should be getting it. Hooray!

Castlerock 12-24-2011 09:54 AM

2 movie tickets. But the tickets are for a California theater chain. I live in Massachusetts.

mauchow 12-24-2011 10:03 AM

My company gave everyone a 2% bonus of their salary and put into their 401K.

Tim Tellean 12-24-2011 11:13 AM

Unemployed for 9 months, I got an eviction notice for my family.
