Debate on releasing info on newly created deadly virus

Debate Persists on Deadly Flu Made Airborne - NYTimes.com

Scientist made a new form of the A(N5H1) virus that would be airborne and thus far deadlier than the previous version. Now the debate is what to do with that information.

BillJasper 12-27-2011 09:50 AM

Why would we make something like that public to begin with?

Butter 12-27-2011 10:11 AM

Way to go, idiots.

Wait, why did the scientist create an airborne virus?

That's like taking a perfectly good Daddy Long Legs (most deadly venomous spider, but incapable of breaking human skin with his stinger), and genetically designing him with a sharper stinger. WTF?

They don't need to make it public necessarily, but as I understand the debate, it's more about releasing it in a form that can do some good for scientists and officials in the countries where the H5N1 is common, and letting them work on controlling it. Obviously they want to do that without letting it get into the hands of the bad guys. Probably they will end us releasing some kind of redacted version of the information.

"It's going to happen anyway. We might as well deal with it now."

BillJasper 12-27-2011 11:18 AM

No matter what you think of their motivations this is some scary shit. Sixty percent mortality rate, think I'm going to go live on top of a mountain.

That is not true about the daddy long legs on both statements. It's not the deadliest and it can break the skin.

Okay, fine...

Then it's like taking Michael Vick and genetically engineering him to be accurate, make correct ball decisions, and stay healthy, so that the Eagles can finally win a Super Bowl.

I mean, WTF would anyone do that?!?

(Better? ;) )

Not really, I can't stand Vick.

Well, the biomedical companies will make a ton of money now in vaccines. I wonder which company I should buy stock in?

For some reason, I am getting images of Bruce McCullough from The Kids in the Hall saying "I'm sorry I caused all that cancer."

Is there a mutual fund that specializes in evil companies generally? I think evil is always a "buy".

illinifan999 12-27-2011 02:30 PM

I'm going on a limb and guessing this shit gets out around December 21, 2012.
