Ping: CKII - Game of Thrones fans
The first release of the mod is out. Totally playable...I stayed up till 4am on the night it was released playing, and have just dropped like 4 hours more onto it without even noticing.
I don't think I'll ever play Vanilla-CKII again. http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/...ame-of-Thrones After a ton of play Friday night (6-7 hours) and about 3-4 hours this afternoon I have succeeded in my first quest. Ultimate goal is to displace the Martell's as Lord Paramounts of Dorne. My current ruler is the Castellan of Dorne, so that's nice. House Dayne (me) are now High Lords of the Red Mountains and the Prince's Pass in 8352. The High Lordship of Brimstone is next (my current heir will be Lord of Nymerwell b/c his mother is the ruler of Nymerwell. That will get the ball rolling on that). Arguably the most powerful family in Dorne now. I married my way into the Lordship of Prince's Pass, and then fabricated a claim on Skyreach. A quick war on that branch of Yronwood's (who had taken it from the Fowler's) later and I seized Skyreach (their last province) and was able to anoint myself the High Lord of the Prince's Pass. I'd love to branch out and take on some of the Reach lords (say the Dornish Marches?). Maybe I'll temporarily put my assault on the High Lordship of the Brimstone deserts on hold and go after some more fertile land first. |
I haven't fired up CKII in a while - great game, but I've just had no PC gaming time the past month or so. This will break that drought, thanks for the heads-up.
|
wth is CKII?
|
Just a caution that it's still a 0.1 release so there are of course things that are incomplete (some house flags), and other things that have already been noted and are being fixed.
That being said - I think it's totally playable at the moment. Hasn't crashed on me at all or anything, and if you can suspend your like "OMG this minor house doesn't have a flag" angst it's a solid gaming experience still at the moment. More scenarios are planned - the initial one is Robert's rebellion. Apparently there are some nice "flavor events" if you play as the Targs or one of the other great houses. I imagine it might play "best" if you play as one of the Lords Paramount - more involved in that war, more to do with your vassals and such. |

Nevermind...duh.
If it weren't 40 bucks I'd probably try it. I've so lost the interest in paying 40-60 bucks for a game that eternally fails to impress. Maybe I'm just getting old and crotchety. |

well thank you. I'll jump at a chance to play GoT for 10 bucks!
apparently gonna take almost an hour to download but hey, I got minecraft to entertain me =) |
Sweet.
I just had an affair with the Lady Paramount of Dorne. And then I went back and noticed that we're distantly related. My grandfather Tion Dayne had two sisters, Ashara and Allyria. Ashara married Albar Royce of the Vale matrilinerally. They had a daughter, Cerenna Dayne. I married Cerenna to the Prince of Dorne, who subsequently ascended to be Lord Paramount. They had 4 daughters, the eldest of which just became Lady Paramount of Dorne after her father's death. |
I just got back into FM. So much for that...haha

Incest! Do you unlock some sort of GoT-related achievement bonus for that? |
Damn. My computer just can't handle this game. Between this one and D3, I'm starting to feel the need to replace this dinosaur.
Looking forward to more dynasties until then. (hint, hint) |
Yeah this is the one game I've been tempted to get, but my computer's no where up to the task.
|
Quote:
I should do a dynasty yes. Unfortunately unless you all want to settle for a "Here's how we got to where we are now" type of speedier summation of things where they stand now, I don't want to restart yet...although I'm sure with the next release fixing some bugs I will. |
Quote:
Not THAT closely related. Distant cousins I guess? |
Can you run it said that my desktop couldnt handle CK2 but when I loaded it there, it ran pretty well for 100 years or so before time slowed down. I always play on the fastest speed though
|
Good thing I didn't bring my PC here. Otherwise I'd go download this and not accomplish anything for the next week.
|
Thanks for the Amazon sale link. Downloading it now.
Question - I've not played a CK type game before. Does anyone have/know of a concise tutorial that will help me get up to speed quickly? |
Good god how do you succeed at ANYTHING in this damnedable game.
I spent 4 hours playing with this learning what everything does and basically turning my little french hamlet into a starving miserable mudpile of failure.... Now granted I probably shouldn't have started in a county where the difficulty was 80% of the little bars.... Now to find the mod and see how I can do as a Stark! |
Yeah..thanks...not going to get sleep tonight when I get back from being out at the park with the kids and dropping them off at the ex's

Exactly my problem this weekend!! :D |

Take it slow. Use your first few savegames to figure out how to manage a small little county and then a duchy and then a kingdom. The principles are similar but the execution due to the level of complexity ramps up each level of hierarchy you go up. There are some great CKII wiki's out there and beginner's guides and such. If you register the game on the Paradox forums I think they have a pretty decent beginner's guide. It's definitely a game with a serious learning-curve. My first couple savegames in Europe were HORRID. I was an absolute mess. But now I've got my Westeros game and I've been hugely successful (growing my treasurery reliably, building up my lands, 2 High Lordship (Duchy-level I guess) titles, and I've got my levies that I can raise up to like 20k men). Read the beginner's guides...consult the wiki frequently as you play (hell I was just looking at it to try to figure out how to raise the castle infrastructure level last night). I'm still far from an expert - others here are much better players than me. |

You mean after 100 years it stopped working because of hardware issues? |
Ok, I have the mod where it supposed to go, launch the game, hit the checkmark for the mod and the game starts, but it doesn't load the mod...what am I doing wrong?
|

You have the mod in the steam folder right, not in my documents? |
Resolution too high maybe?

Nah, very fast just went about as fast as normal. Im a fast simmer so it wasnt ideal for me, but most people probably play on normal quite a bit more than I do |
In my first attempt, Hooster Tully married Cersei
The Mad King also won. I declared independence and his two allies were the Tully's (who brought in the Lannisters naturally) and the Arryn's. Jon had about 10 kids with Lyssa too. Pretty convenient for the Mad King. I didnt last long either |
Ok, I'm definitely getting the hang of things, but one wrong step and man did I bugger things up =)
Took over as lord Howland Reed a crannogman. married a lovely young woman had 2 kids, one of which turned out to be a pretty amazing son. Built up 600 prestige in teh first 20 years but then started hearing rumors of trouble from a vassal. turns out the little shit was sewing lies about me all over the place and trying to get the other reach Lords to unite against me. So i revoked his Lordship. To which he declared war against me and asked the STARKS for help!! They declined as I was beloved by Lord Eddard. However the little fucker has 3x my number of men and ate me alive in battle. Taking me prisoner. My son was in charge at this point as I had passed on. Aemon had no heirs so once imprisoned...game over =( 348 points I accomplished nothing. BUT, I at least am getting a clue. |
Don't revoke without a valid cause. :)
|
Okay - i'll do a Starks AAR with the new Starks game that I just started. I'm 20 years in, so it will involve a bit of recapping what has gone on so far (the War is still fully on), but then I'll keep current with it.
Just trying to decide if I should work from home this morning and take a few minutes here and there to do the setup so you all can pepper me with "What's up with X" questions all day that I can answer later or what. |
speaking of the war....Robert won teh war in my game literally like 2 months in. Wasn't even close. THen he died, poisoning it would appear =)

Same early win happened in my first Stark game. Then all the Targs ran off to be Court members at Three Towers (a vassel of Oldtown). Pretty funny. Okay - so I ended up coming into the office. I'll start the AAR tonight, but I made a placeholder thread for it so you can ask your "What happened to House X or Person Y" questions today. Bumpity.
Big new release (0.3.3) yesterday (well 0.3.2 was the big one, but this is the bugfixes of it). What scenarios are available?

Excellent!
|
Yes. Thanks for the update. Look forward to giving the new version a spin.
|
I think my single favorite feature is the Kingsguard. The Valerian swords are pretty cool, but was never able to marry into one
|
Quote:
Kingsguard is pretty snazzy. Then again - dragons are nice too. Still plenty of work to be done with it, but it's coming along hella nicely. |
I do like this mod, but every time I play it it seems like it goes off the rails pretty fast - still fun to see what happens. Right now I am focusing on other mods, so many good ones coming out for the game right now.

What other mods would you recommend for this? |
Right now I am playing around with A New World, the Dawn of Empires. Basically what it does is use the existing counties but strip away all duchies and kingdoms, and gives each state its own culture and religion - then you can watch it over a long time to see which empires develop, as well as which cultures/religions come to dominate. I think it's good for AARs, but it does crash a good bit so I recommend frequent autosaves.
Paradox Interactive Forums I also play Lux Invicta a lot - basically there's a very detailed alternate timeline which also focuses on religion - a remnant eastern Roman state and a Roman state which is broken up into various successors. I enjoy this one because I like to play in an area which isn't already set into large empires - this is a good mod to be able to take your own area and really make your mark on the map. Paradox Interactive Forums CK2 Plus - lots of changes to the game that make it more interesting and realistic - better crusades, nastier diseases, states use mercenaries more often and more effectively, more useful stats, better health/fertility, and tyranny systems, generally a lot of new stuff - CK2, but better. Paradox Interactive Forums I am also looking forward to Elder Kings - not done yet, but it is a project to make a world based on the Elder Scrolls games. |

Well it's supposed to go "off the rails" isn't it? I mean...it's supposed to be a dynamic universe. The later scenarios do a pretty good job setting up situations as they exist in the book, but to some level once you hit play you have to...suspend your preconceptions, ya know? I started a new Aegon's Conquest game last night and after the Durrendon's came back and killed off Orlys Baratheon I prmoted the Estermont's to LP of the Stormlands, and they're my best ally. In fact...I got rid of the Lannisters, Tyrells, and Martell's too. Now the Dayne's are LP of Dorne, the Florent's are LP of the Reach, and the Westerlands are held by some dumblefuck. The Starks/Arryns/Tullys still hold their LP titles. It's awesome. |
Yeah obviously it is dynamic, and it's fun to see what happens when different scenarios happen - in fact my favorite thing about the mod is how many events are coded into it - I'd say it's definitely leading in that category of all the mods I've tried.
|

Cool. There's definitely more fun stuff being worked on right now - one of the devs is particularly excited about some wedding-related events he's working on. And of course there's the R+L=J submod. And now that we've gotten a few more kinks ironed out I think the next big area of focus is going to be making religion meaningful. (I say "we", but I'm really just a tester, and a semi-inactive one at that). |
DT, do you know if there is a mirror of the zipped version?
The rapidshare link has exceeded it's quota and I need the zipped version since I'm playing on a Macbook and the installer won't do me much good. |
Sure Lonnie - shoot me a PM with your email and I'll fire over the zipped version to you by email.
|
Sweet turn of events.
So the Lefford's, who I had made LP of the Westerlands (in place of the Lannisters), conquered the Florent's (LP's of the Reach). I married my daughter matrilinerally to the Lefford heir, but the Leffords went and teamed up with the Iron Islanders (now bred in with the Tully's I guess?), to faction up against me and declare independence. Fuck them. You don't declare independence against the dragon!! Especially not when I had been a totally nice ruler (except for trying to counter the rising power of the Leffords by tweaking them a little). The Dayne's in Dorne, the Arryn's in the Vale, the Northerners, the Tully's, and the Estermont's (LP of the Stormlands now) remained loyal. We fucking CRUSHED the traitorous rebels. I sent my dragon to burn their capital, and we ended the war after wiping out the Florent and Westerland armies comprehensively. So then I stripped the Leffords of both of their LP titles, and the Iron Islanders of theirs too. So I have 3 LP titles to hand out to loyal vassals - or Targaryn family members for that matter. GOOD TIMES!!! |
I have had some fun with this the last couple of days. Pretty neat to play out some altered history from the books and see how things go. Overall, it does seem to get slow and boring over time without any threats outside of Westros. But what if's, like what if Cersi married Stannis? Are fun. I'm trying out CK+ right now, which looks very interesting.

Well there will be ex-Westeros threats soon...*hint hint* |
