3. For each draft pick, you must specify the creator of the character. The creator can only be used once per player and once per main category.

4. For the date categories (21st, 20th, 19th, Pre-19th), we are using the time that the character was originally created.

5. For Literary, Film, TV, etc. categories, you can draft a character that did not initially debut in that format if you feel they are more notable for a different format.

6. You can draft real people. In this case, the creator should be designated as "Real" and this is subject to the same limitations as above.

7. You can draft characters created by unknown people. In this case, the creator should be designated as "Unknown" and is subject to same limitations as above.

8. Please bold your selections and use the following format - "1.1 Your Mom, Muscle, Pre-18th Century (Real)"

9. I will be lenient on enforcing time limits as long as we are making good progress each day. If you are not going to be available during normal daytime hours, please try to submit lists.

10. At the end of the draft, I will post a voting thread including everyone's picks. FOFC members will vote on the best Super Team.

Chief Rum 06-04-2012 10:16 AM

Okay, coming up with my pick. Sorry for being on the West Coast, guys! lol

Chief Rum 06-04-2012 10:20 AM

1.1 Batman --Science/Gadgets, Comic Book (Bob Kane--artist, Bill Kane--writer)

Chief Rum 06-04-2012 10:21 AM

I edited to add the dashed line in my selection above to separate the character name/choice from the other info.

larrymcg421 06-04-2012 10:25 AM

From his list, hoopsguy selects:

1.2 - Superman, Protector, 20th Century (Jerry Siegel)

Chief Rum 06-04-2012 10:34 AM

It's amazing how difficult a choice this was. Not only am I not all that well-versed in the comic book superhero world (from which I figure a number of characters will be used in this draft), but just the wealth of characters and information was immense and very hard to navigate.

I had many considerations. Do I go with the most powerful character I can think of, thinking of team versus team conflict? Do I go with the most popular character I can think of, because in the end this draft will come down to a popularity contest? Do I go with the character who is the best choice in a scarce category, like drafting a C or a SS higher in a baseball draft? What category do I select if my choice applies to many?

I ended up going with the popularity option. Batman is generally considered the 2nd most popular comic book character of all time, from what I have found anyway. Combine with the coming movie in the very popular series by Nolan, I thought he was the best fit, going popular.

Batman is not even technically a superhero in that he has no innate superpowers. He is instead just a guy with a lot of money and intelligence and drive. Because of his knowledge of science and his heavy use of gadgetry, I am hopeful I am not stretching him too much by placing him in the Science/Gadgets section. I felt that would be a more difficult category to fill.

I could have put Batman in a number of different source categories, and went with Comic Book, for the reason that that is his original source and because I felt that for me it is a pretty limiting category, as I don't really read comic books. I realize for those that do, the Comic Book category will be a wealthy source material.

I don't know which between the artist and writer is most responsible for creating Batman so I have included both. As I have heard of neither (no doubt they are both well accomplished in the comic book realm, but of that I am ignorant), I wasn't too concerned about having them unavailable to me going forward.

Chief Rum 06-04-2012 10:36 AM

Good choice by hoops. Superman was the superhero generally placed at the top of the most popular lists, and only one I found consistently ahead of Batman.

wade moore 06-04-2012 10:40 AM

I think this was a pretty obvious 1/2 punch. Curious where it goes from here.

Danny 06-04-2012 11:02 AM

If would could get PM's when we are up that would be cool!

Danny 06-04-2012 11:03 AM

Wow, I feel like picking 3rd in the Odom / Durant year

The Jackal 06-04-2012 11:05 AM

I think you mean Oden. Odom is actually a useful player.

The Jackal 06-04-2012 11:08 AM

Have new hires at work today so there will be a couple of periods about an hour long where I can't check, but other than that I'll be here.

Danny 06-04-2012 11:09 AM

I have my pick, just deciding which category to place him / her under

Danny 06-04-2012 11:12 AM

1.3 Jesus of Nazareth, Leader, Pre 19th century (Real)

The Jackal 06-04-2012 11:13 AM

For clarification, can we only use a real person once, or unlimited?

The Jackal 06-04-2012 11:13 AM

Eh, I think I get it from the rules, so now that Danny has used a real person in leader, we can't use anymore real leaders.

I think we can still use one, just not fitting those categories as Jesus would be a Creator.

The Jackal 06-04-2012 11:17 AM

Hmm, I'm still not super clear on it then. Sorry, work is distracting my brain.

wade moore 06-04-2012 11:20 AM

What he's saying is that now a real person can't be used by Danny at all and not by the rest of us in the leader category.

I think he slipped that second part in, I don't remember that being there before.

The Jackal 06-04-2012 11:21 AM

That makes sense to me.

Yes I did, I didnt read the rule that said to post creator

Grover 06-04-2012 11:26 AM

1.4 Spider-Man, Protector, 20th Century (Stan Lee)

Danny 06-04-2012 11:26 AM

Though obviously not everyone agrees on his creator, I'm going with real

Danny 06-04-2012 11:26 AM

Such inside the box thinking with picks 1, 2 and 4!

TRO 06-04-2012 11:32 AM

Batman was the clear 1. He beats Superman head to head, so it is a no contest really.

Oh, I thought about Jesus. I also thought about putting him in as Mythology/Folklore and creator as Anonymous, just to piss off the Bible thumper crowd.

But in the end, Jesus doesn't have all the cool toys Batman has.

Well, I meant that larry slid in the "creator can't be used in that category by anyone" bit fwiw. I could be wrong though.

hoopsguy 06-04-2012 11:57 AM

I just wasn't going to do someone like Jesus - it comes up in every one of these drafts and is always polarizing.

I'll provide longer bios/rationale stuff around picks when I'm home tonight.

I'm sure it will be polarizing in the voting, but I plan to send some mass emails to local church groups with this site and voting instructions when it is time for that.

larrymcg421 06-04-2012 12:09 PM

The creator limitation for drafter and category was in there from the beginning. I wanted to have some strategic limitations, but didn't want to completely cancel out too many people, so I decided against a creator being eliminated for the entire draft.

However, the creators are not limited by the subcategories. So for example Seigel is now eliminated for Protector, but not for 20th Century.

Logan 06-04-2012 12:11 PM

I can never participate in these drafts because I'm not even smart enough to understand the rules.

Danny 06-04-2012 12:12 PM

I wish Izulde was playing too. He always has a unique way of picking that makes things interesting.

I think it's a good rule fwiw, I just didn't notice it before (the 2nd part of it).

wade moore 06-04-2012 12:14 PM
