sitemeter.com

Well, whatever this "tracking.sitemeter.com" site is that this forum wants me to log into tonight, you are now blocked.

Logan 06-25-2012 08:07 PM

Saw it on my trip here about an hour ago (on each page view), nothing now though.

edit: Take that second part back. How do I block it on Firefox?

EagleFan 06-25-2012 08:09 PM

SOB, now I'm getting it.

Grover 06-25-2012 08:09 PM

Haven't seen it once on Chrome.

bhlloy 06-25-2012 08:11 PM

I entered "user" and "password" and it took me to some secret mod forum. You should see how many candid Pumpy photos there are over there

Showing up on my IPhone

DaddyTorgo 06-25-2012 08:17 PM

Blocked it awhile back with Ghostify.

RomaGoth 06-25-2012 08:21 PM

Glad I wasn't the only one getting that popup.

What is Ghostify?

SackAttack 06-25-2012 08:23 PM

Popped up when I came to the forum just now. Saw the thread and wondered what gstelmack was up to NOW.

Popped up again when I clicked the thread. Canceled out both times, haven't seen it since.

RomaGoth 06-25-2012 08:35 PM

Figured out what it is, just not sure why now all of a sudden it is showing up with that stupid authentication box. Never saw it before today.

Errr...Ghostery. My bad.

Ghostery™ sees the invisible web - tags, web bugs, pixels and beacons. Ghostery tracks the trackers and gives you a roll-call of the ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers, and other companies interested in your activity. After showing you who's tracking you, Ghostery™ also gives you a chance to learn more about each company it identifies. How they describe themselves, a link to their privacy policies, and a sampling of pages where we've found them are just a click away. Ghostery™ allows you to block scripts from companies that you don't trust, delete local shared objects, and even block images and
iframes. Ghostery puts your web privacy back in your hands.

Sitemeter is just a site that provides traffic data on your site, like a poor man's Google Analytics.

In the "Day at the office" theme I see the sitemeter icon at the bottom of the screen (like on any site it's been set up for) but don't get the popup window you guys are mentioning.

Thanks. I looked it up and found Ghostery instead but figured that's what you meant.

gstelmack 06-26-2012 07:10 AM

Ghostery sounds interesting, but the "free" part always sounds fishy to me. What do they get out of it?

yeah, there must be something broken somewhere because sitemeter isn't a shady thing.

Ben E Lou 06-26-2012 08:19 AM

We've had the Sitemeter widget on FOFC for roughly 4 years. Operation Sports had me put it on the site back before they acquired it in summer 2008, to gauge traffic. I haven't touched it since then, so I have no idea why it would suddenly cause pop-ups for some people. *shurg*

DaddyTorgo 06-26-2012 08:22 AM

Weird...I just got the sitemeter popup for the first couple times on my work computer (use IE here, don't have any popup blockers or ad-aware or anything).

Your soul

Buccaneer 06-26-2012 08:34 AM

Been getting on every page refresh since yesterday. Very annoying.

Young Drachma 06-26-2012 09:04 AM

Never seen it. Ad block rules?

Autumn 06-26-2012 09:27 AM

I started getting this yesterday too, but haven't seen it yet today.

CrimsonFox 06-26-2012 09:31 AM

I did notice it popping up other sites, too.

I'd bet something broke on an update they rolled out.

Autumn 06-26-2012 02:38 PM

Me too. I suppose if you have pop-ups completely eliminated, you won't get it, but that's some AdBlock-only feature. It certainly isn't shutting it down automatically outside of that.

Ghostery takes care of it.

RendeR 06-26-2012 03:25 PM

The only thing I really run to block anything at all is adblock and I've never once seen popups or weird ads or anything of the like.

I did get them when i forgot to add adblock onto the new machine right away once...the things people will put up with frighten me.

Me too. After I got it a few times, I set NoScript to block it.

I use nothing clever - just Chrome and I've never seen it, I reckon its something displayed by your ad-blockers to gain revenue ;)

sabotai 06-26-2012 05:36 PM

Far be it for me to dispute your conclusion reached after a study involving a sample size of 1, but I'm fairly certain it's not that.
