Mount Rushmore - Band member becomes one hit wonder

Usual MR rules apply - which *four* faces go on the mountain. Post your four, then you have license to engage freely in the discussion. Post just your one, or a list of ten, and you will be suitably scored and ridiculed.

Today's Mount Rushmore:

Band members whose solo career amounted to one hit.

Points for notability of both the band and the hit, plus the relative lack of impact from the further solo catalog. No formal scoring of course.

cartman 08-20-2012 09:08 AM

At first blush, I'm having a hard time coming up with anything Anasazi cliff carving worthy, much less Mount Rushmore worthy.

CrimsonFox 08-20-2012 09:11 AM

Dave Wakeling who went from the one hit wonder band The English Beat (Save it for Later" to form the new group (of basically himself and one other who didn't do much) General Public (who also became a one-hit wonder(Tenderness))

CrimsonFox 08-20-2012 09:15 AM

Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham both of Fleetwood Mac eeach had one hit in the 80s (Gotta Hold On Me and Go Insane, respectively)

Ksyrup 08-20-2012 09:30 AM

This seems less of a Mount Rushmore topic and more of a puzzle/interactive forum topic.

The Fleetwood Mac ones are good. I was thinking along those lines of bands with multiple members who had solo careers - Styx, Eagles, etc.

I guess in that vein, Steve Perry from Journey with Oh Sherrie would qualify, although he might have had a second minor hit off that album, I don't remember.

Easy Mac 08-20-2012 09:41 AM

Everlast - What It's Like (formerly of House of Pain)
The Bassist and drummer from U2 - Mission Impossible Theme
Nick Lachey - What's Left of Me (formerly/now non-formerly of 98 degrees)
Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side (formerly of the Velvet Underground)

cartman 08-20-2012 09:41 AM

Lindsey Buckingham also had "Holiday Road" in the 80s.

DougW 08-20-2012 09:42 AM

DUET ? Bill Medley - The Time of My Life (The Righteous Brothers)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RH0lEVMuzzw

Larry Graham - One in a Million You. (Sly and the Family Stone)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYycDyAxgb0

DUET ? Phillip Baily - Easy Lover (Earth, Wind, & Fire)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8q8kB87APc

Candyman - Knockin' Boots. (Tone Loc)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q76IlF5HES0

Not sure if the duets would count, so - if not, here's 3 & 4
Spoiler

QuikSand 08-20-2012 09:52 AM

The thread might have immediately yielded the Mount Rushmore of not following the rules of Mount Rushmore.

These rules should be stickied somewhere for the casual lurker that wants to take a crack !! :)

hardly a hit. Merely in a popular movie.

Styx and Eagles wouldn't work as Deyoung had many (crappy) hits, I don't believe Shaw had any. He coformed Damn Yankees (barf) instead. Eagles, same. Henley had a bunch of hits and Frey and Walsh a few. Frey is the closest but he had The Heat is On and Smuggler's Blues. Perry would definitely work. I don't think anything beside Oh Sherri charted. I remember the followup but it was a stinker.

We seem to be stuck in the 80s :)

Everlast is a perfect example! Great pick.
Bailey and Medley are really good.

fixed

QuikSand 08-20-2012 10:06 AM

Love the On You're With, Stephen Stills (CSN/CSNY, Buffalo Springfield)
Welcome Back, John Sebastian (The Lovin' Spoonful)
Midnight Rider, Gregg Allman (Allman Brothers)
Oh Sherry, Steve Perry (Journey)

So, it would have been clear=er i I had posted something like this:

Okay, then.

QuikSand 08-20-2012 10:09 AM

I initially thought of this as an 80s only category, and was thinking about Lou Gramm's Midnight Blue and Dennis DeYoung's Desert Moon, along with Oh Sherry.

QuikSand 08-20-2012 10:11 AM

Back In the New York Groove by Ace Frehley of Kiss would also be in my mix - that wasn't a huge charting song, I suppose, but it seems to have held up well.

I was gonna say Steve Perry too, but thought this took him out of the one hit wonder mix.

Yet if you ask 100 people Family Feud style to name a Lindsey Buckingham song from the 80s, 90+ would say 'Holiday Road'. Ask people to name the artist that sang 'Go Insane' and you are likely to be met with a blank stare.

Ksyrup 08-20-2012 10:13 AM

*shurg*

I'll take off. I know the rules. I just find this stuff much more fun as an interactive discussion than a "run off and search the internet for 4 entries so I can play along" thing. I don't see the fun in that. The fun is in trying to identify them while interacting with the group. I can sit in my office and make Rushmore lists all day on my own.

Dang, forgot about that song, but it was a pretty decent hit.

QuikSand 08-20-2012 10:15 AM

And sorry to disappoint you.

Fidatelo 08-20-2012 11:10 AM

I'm going to break the rules because I don't have the time to think of 3 names, but Pras of Fugees hit huge with "Ghetto Superstar" and has done absolutely nothing else of note otherwise, as far as I can tell.

Logan 08-20-2012 11:15 AM

I'm gonna google around during lunch to try to find four people who played with Billy Joel that also had solo careers.

stevew 08-20-2012 11:43 AM

Stills obvious 1.1
Thought of Nick Lachey too
Going to go with Ol Dirty's "Got Your Money" even if it only charted at 26.
Chad Kroeger's "Hero" maybe?

Nah - your thread, your rules. It's just that with the way the internet is, I find these things more fun if you try to keep them "off the top of my head" instead of "go google the answers and come back later."

Regardless of the discussion around "Holiday Road", Buckingham had another top ten hit ("Trouble") besides "Go Insane", so he's not a one hit wonder.

Grammaticus 08-20-2012 11:22 PM

What do you consider a hit? If somebody charted something at 106, does that count? How about 85 or 60.....

thesloppy 08-20-2012 11:50 PM

Lou Reed (Velvet Underground)- Walk on the Wild Side
Buster Poindexter (New York Dolls) - Hot Hot Hot
Tom Tom Club (Talking Heads) - Genius of Love
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) - There's No Way Out of Here

Stills and Sebastian came to me off the top of my head. I will concur on Gregg Allman, and my #4 is...

...

Let My Love Open the Door, Pete Townshend.

thesloppy 08-21-2012 12:04 AM

Personally, I would count Greg Alman's "I'm No Angel" and Pete Townshend's "Rough Boys" & "Face to Face" as 'hits', but I have no idea if they technically meet that standard.

Scarecrow 08-21-2012 12:01 PM

Donald Fagen of Steely Dan with "IGY (What a Beautiful World)"
John Sebastian of The Lovin Spoonful with "Welcome Back"
Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary with "The Wedding Song (There is Love)"
El Debarge of Debarge with "Who's Johnny"

Damn, I think I even own that album, too. Nice pull.

Sensitivity - Ralph Tresvant

Walk on the Wild Side - Lou Reed

Easy Lover - Philip Bailey/Phil Collins
Okay so Philip Bailey is the one hit wonder for this song. Formerly of Earth, Wind and Fire
Spoiler

Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant
Formerly of the band The Equals

Antmeister 08-21-2012 04:03 PM

And yeah, I don't think Steve Perry qualifies for one hit wonder in his solo career. Close, but he does have at least 2 hits.

stevew 08-21-2012 04:03 PM

Since I've posted-
It's amazing how many members of old bands I can recall, but I couldn't tell you any members of most of the bands on my phone.

Who are the guys in Arcade Fire? Who really cares, I guess.

Slit skirts is fantastic, did this never chart?

Toddzilla 08-21-2012 04:05 PM

Sisqo (Dru Hill) - Thong Song
Ralph Tresvant (New Edition) - Sensitivity
Nick Lachey (98 Degrees) - Whats Left of Me

and i'm out of ideas....

Never released as a single, according to teh Wikis.

DougW 08-21-2012 05:04 PM

I'm kinda surprised by the lack of love for Time of my Life - Bill Medley. That song was huge. Hit top 5 in every chart, tops in a few. Hell, hit #8 again 4 years after it was released - due to the movie hitting TV. And, the Righteous Brothers were pretty big. Members of the RocknRoll Hall of fame, with multiple hits - including the most played song in Radio history (You've lost that lovin' feeling).

mauchow 08-21-2012 05:15 PM

Gavin rossdale love remains the same.. ill edit and think of more

I had to look it up - I would have figured Rough Boys had charted high as well, but it actually did worse than A Little Is Enough.

Still, I think Townshend had enough success in his solo career with those songs, plus Slit Skirts, Stardom In Action, Give Blood, Face the Face and Secondhand Love to not be considered a true "one-hit wonder".

QuikSand 08-21-2012 07:55 PM

I don't think this is a one-sided argument, but I marked down the various duets or side project groups as a less-than-best fit for this setup. YMMV, I suspect.

Time Of My Life would otherwise be really strong.

Wouldn't the Traveling Wilburys have to win the least success compared to the past success of the members of their supergroup?
