Official College Football Week 3 thread

There are three matchups of ranked teams this weekend:

USC at Stanford
Notre Dame at Michigan State
Florida at Tennessee

The games kick off this week on Thursday night, with Rutgers playing South Florida.

MrBug708 09-11-2012 09:05 AM

UCLA Houston...hopefully a blowout

Matthean 09-11-2012 09:19 AM

Well, 'Bama at Arkansas would have been interesting.

Logan 09-11-2012 09:27 AM

Nervous for Thursday. The Rutgers offense has been so ridiculously vanilla, with the passing game pretty disjointed. I'm hoping it was to keep everything simple prior to USF (huge conference game) and Arkansas, but I'm worried Nova just can't be relied upon.

The defense will be fun to watch, for all you "I can't believe I have to watch the Big East on a Thursday night" people.

Ksyrup 09-11-2012 09:35 AM

FSU plays a real team finally - Wake Forest. Their coach is actually good so this game makes me nervous, since we've played a couple of HS freshman teams as warm-ups.

bronconick 09-11-2012 09:36 AM

How has someone not thrown like $4 million at Grobe? The man is a sorcerer.

mauchow 09-11-2012 10:12 AM

Wisconsin needs to start showing signs of life on the offensive line front. Perhaps the markeson firing does that.

cadmus2166 09-11-2012 11:35 AM

I normally hate scheduling cupcakes, but I'm glad Michigan is playing UMass this week. Both lines need to get some things sorted out.

cartman 09-11-2012 11:41 AM

Doesn't look like my buddies and I will be making the road trip to Oxford. I'm bummed, as I've heard that The Grove is one of the top pre-game experiences in all of college football.

MacroGuru 09-11-2012 01:20 PM

Saturday Night, 10pm EST BYU @ Utah. (Will be on ESPN2)

BYU is ranked at 25 in the AP poll. Utah just experienced a major upset, losing to Utah State.

BYU is like 13-0 to Utah when playing them as a ranked vs unranked team.

Utah's starting QB just ended his career due to injuries and it looks they MIGHT be without their starting RB. Combine this with a bad OL and it may work out in our favor.

However, it is the last Holy War (until 2016, and who knows after getting their ass kicked at Utah State) and I don't expect this game to be a blowout like last season where we stunk it up and lost 54-10. I see this one being a slugfest and probably a 24-21 game with BYU kicking the game winner.

Considering the display Pitt put on last week, can you blame them?

I hate that we finally made the move up and with it's our least talented team in at least 10 years due to the incompetence of the previous coach. If Tre Roberson had 114 and 2 TD's on 5 carries before being injured, I can't imagine we can stop Denard Robinson. (Ans yes, both lines are probably our biggest weakness unless you want to say QB where we have 2 FR battling it out.)

tarcone 09-11-2012 06:51 PM

Iowa to lose to UNI this weekend. The only way Iowa wins is if we get a STs touchdown and a defensive TD. sigh.

Go Hawks!

Glad to have Tennessee in the top 25 again. It's been a while.

Big Fo 09-11-2012 08:09 PM

I just looked it up and am surprised that Michigan State is only favored by six (at home) over Notre Dame.

I didn't really like the sudden fourth quarter QB switch ND pulled last week although I have to admit it worked out.

The games tend to be close and ND can pass the ball so they have a shot at taking them down.

ND was claiming after the game that Golson bruised his hand on the 4th quarter fumble and is still the starter... knowing Kelly's track record, I don't really buy it, but they're at least claiming it was due to injury.

Ksyrup 09-12-2012 06:51 AM

Kelly said that injury or not, the plan was for Rees to come in for the last drive. Which seems bizarre.

Utah's QB Jordan Wynn announces he is stepping away from football after an injury last weekend will lead to his 4th shoulder surgery.

Yeah ....Front Office Football Central - View Single Post - Official College Football Week 3 thread

But their backups Hays and Wilson I think are better than Wynn. I only think he was in there due to experience. He looked horrible up until the injury in the game.

cartman 09-12-2012 11:22 AM

I'm surprised this didn't get a little more press. When Muschamp was asked after the game about Florida's 20-17 win at College Station, he said "You come in here to this environment and to be able to disappoint these people is a lot of fun." This was after he said something earlier in the week to the effect that if you've been to College Station, it would be the only time you'd go.

Looks like more players for LSU are sitting due to academics. Only one seemed to be a starter and they hadn't played yet anyway.

A cool story and short video on WVU assistant Daron Roberts. A guy that is a Harvard Law graduate that walked away from law the day he was supposed to take the bar to attempt to be a football coach.

The guy wanted to be governor of Texas....... Starting to show some intelligence getting out of politics. The biggest thing is he seems passionate about football which is always welcomed.

Ksyrup 09-13-2012 12:11 PM

Well, one of Penn State's back-up kickers just quit the team, so I assume that means he was less than thrilled with the decision to let Ficken keep kicken'.

General Mike 09-13-2012 12:33 PM

Rutgers gonna lose big tonight

Logan 09-13-2012 02:09 PM

We win if Nova is just decent. I'm not sure I expect him to be, so that's where I stand as far as a prediction. Oh, and Daniels will shit the bed once again.

A starting WR walked as well.

It's believed that he was actually kicked off the team, if that matters. He reached out to Rutgers earlier to see if there was interest in him transferring, but there wasn't (he originally verbaled to RU along with Gerald Hodges and Jordan Hill, and all 3 flipped to PSU back in 2009).

Yeah probably. Nova doesn't even have to be decent, just no bad turnovers. I was just depressed at work earlier. Think we have a decent shot to win this one, and wouldn't be shocked if we put up some points on them.

I dont know how to say this other than

Gary Nova sucks as a quarterback

Who was that one guy... Jarrett Jones? So bad Bobby had to bring the starters back in 5 minutes into the 2d half against Duke. This was like 2001 or so. His flame out paved the way for Chris Rix.

Worse. 1999. How awful can you be to suck against Duke with that team? Then he got booted out of school in January 2001 when he would have been the starter.

General Mike 09-13-2012 07:43 PM

Yep, that was it. Jared Jones was the name (I was close). He was the beginning of the end in terms of QBs. He was the heir apparent, and when he flopped, Chris Rix stepped into the black hole at QB, and then Adrian McPherson flamed out, Joe Mauer played baseball, and Jeff Bowden happened... and here we are 12 years later.

After 5 years at USF BJ Daniels is still playing sandlot football.

It seems like they have had like two QBs (Daniels and Grothe) for their entire existence.

Pat Julmiste too and he was garbage too.

Something you don't see very often: Ga Tech QB Tevin Washington will wear #40 on Saturday against UVA in honor of senior Yellow Jacket Julian Burnett, who suffered a career ending injury in the Sun Bowl last year. The seniors on the team have been rotating who wears his jersey and it is Washington's turn.

Logan 09-14-2012 04:51 AM

Very happy with the win. Nova was very solid especially in the second half. Amazing how much better a QB can look when he steps into his throws. He still sails his passes on most out routes but he used the middle of the field much better last night.

Jawan Jamison's game winning run was awesome.

Amazing that one of my biggest concerns is now the punter. Justin Doerner was a monster last season and has been awful so far.

And I'm sad we'll never get to play BJ Daniels again.

Logan 09-14-2012 05:43 AM

Sorry, I'm re-watching the game before work (yep) and just got to Jamison's game icing run.
