Milt Campbell, first black athlete to win the Olympic decathlon, dies in Ga. at 78 - The Washington Post

1952 Silver Medalist in the decathlon (he was rising HS senior when he did that) and 1956 Gold Medalist. Member of both the National Track and International Swimming Hall of Fame. Played a year in the NFL with the Browns before going to CFL. Was named New Jersey athlete of the century in 2000.

I only take the death herald's role on this one, because Campbell was from my hometown and graduated from my high school in New Jersey.

He was the first athlete that I saw profiled in "Greatest Sports Legends."
