Help Suburban Rhythm find some new...uh...rhythm
I think something similar was done like this before, but if not, I'm combining a few of the usual FOFC suspects - advice thread, YouTube, and opinions - to find some new music.
Back in the 90's, I used to buy tons of CDs, looking for new sounds, rare tracks from favorite artists, etc. Now, my new music consumption comes from my kids insistence on RadioDisney in the car. I know of, but have no knowingly ever listened to many of the new-ish hip artists. I know Mumford & Sons exist...Avett Brothers...or even going back Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse...never listened to any of it. So I'm coming to FOFC and it's range of tastes (and opinions) looking for something new. I'm going to post some YT's to give some idea of my tastes, but I'm open to any suggestions |
Graduating HS in 1994, through the college years, and into the 2000's, I was (and still am I suppose) a huge MxPx fan

Through MxPx I got into a few other Christian Bands. I remember seeing something on here re: Five Iron Frenzy's return show, through Kickstarter, a few months back, so pretty sure there's at least one other FIF fan on the boards

Similar to above, Relient K
Plus, this video is pretty great |

I recommended newcomer ZZ Ward the other day (well one track of hers anyway) and within an hour a friend of mine had bought the whole album. His description was "If Adele was from Memphis, this is what she'd sound like".
I don't know Adele well enough to argue with him, so there you go. |
New music from Menahan Street Band

I'm seeing them on Friday. :D I feel like I'm one of the few people who would be perfect to answer this, but I'm mostly drawing blanks in part because my taste in music changed as I got older. Early albums for The Gaslight Anthem had an edge to them that had hints of punk music in it. They wear Springsteen proudly on their sleeves. As they put out more stuff they do get more well produced, etc. In terms of Christian Southern/area rock, I love NEEDTOBREATH. They are one of the few acts that can get on CCM radio, and I don't cringe. They have the sound to be on mainstream radio but aren't due to being Christian. |
If you like 311 and chrisitan bands, PAX 217 should be right up your alley.
I'll second the Menahan Street Band. Love the hell out of their stuff, especially with Charles Bradley. Heres a cover of a Nirvana song that is so much better than the original its preposterous. |
