2012 Christmas Loot thread
What didja get?
|
The realization that after ten years and no children likely that it will be harder and harder to find a winning gift for the wife. Made even worse this year since my nephew was born and seeing how much kids can renew Christmas.

Samsung Galaxy Note II phone
Japanese sodas Bond 50 Blu-ray collection Spartacus: Vengeance Blu-ray Slow-cooker recipe book Drown - Junot Diaz This Is How You Lost Her - Junot Diaz The Wages of Wins (Basketball sabermetrics book) Basketball on Paper (Basketball sabermetrics book) Slam Dunk manga - Vols. 2-24 The Fault in Our Stars - John Green The Blind Owl - Sadegh Hedayat Fraternity hooded sweatshirt Dolphins trivia book Lolita with unique cover Questionable Content Vol. 1 paperback A very book-heavy Christmas this year and the first time I can remember in literal decades that I didn't get any video games. Says a lot about how I've changed the last few years. All in all, a fantastic Christmas. I'm particularly excited about the Note II, which I got early and is already the best phone I've ever owned and it's not even close, the Japanese sodas, and Drown, the last of which I've been trying to find for the last five years, ever since one of my many terrific professors at UW-L had it and Junot Diaz as part of a course book list. |
I'll just leech off my kid's Christmas loot. That explains why I was playing Far Cry 3 until well into the early AM ... and why I'll be getting around to The Walking Dead sometime later. Sirius XM delayed until Jan 1st due to overworked installation folks.

Cable card adapter for the PC
The xx CD Wallet Cash Got the kid a nook color because I'm tired of her stealing my phone and tablet. After hacking it last weekend, it decided to boot endlessly. She may be getting my tablet while I fix the nook. |
Paid of Brighton & Hove Albion shin pads (soccer)

*nods head* Not Far Cry, though. Since they're young girls, it's Lego Harry Potter and some game extension buys for Wizard 101. Otherwise, it was getting a couple of shirts and then gifting myself a few selections off Steam/Green Man like Sleeping Dogs. Today was the first time in my life that I didn't celebrate Christmas Day with my parents. It's a little different, for sure. It still was pretty much all about the kids, though. The wife and I have been gifting ourselves a bit beforehand so we weren't expecting much in the way of gifts to each other today. Next weekend we'll trek over to Charlotte to have a delayed Christmas celebration with my family (strangely enough on the one-year anniversary of everything going to hell, so it'll also be a marking of how far everything has come since then for my parents). We'll be getting the rest of our gifts then, including hopefully the big-ticket request of a Kindle Fire HD. Merry Christmas to all of you! :) |
iTunes gift card (got Carcassonne)
more vintage baseball cards plus eBay gift card the new "1775" book |

Resisting urge to make joke since it's Christmas So, which cards? SI |
SI, Working on completing my 1962 set in fairly high grade and got the Mays and Ford AS cards.

It's not over yet here. We are at my in laws and will give gifts in about four hours.
I had a lot of fun last night reading "Twas the Night Before Christmas" to my son. He's still too young (six months) to understand or to get excited about opening gifts, but I was excited to read the story to my son for the first time. This morning I read the first couple of chapters of Matthew and Luke to him as well. Too young to understand but he at least appeared to be enthusiastic because I was talking and paying attention to him. He got some bath toys, a Tennessee towel, some clothes, and few other little things. After about five gifts he was tired from opening them and passed out. My big gift to my wife was a book I made online for her. It talked about the story of us. It was a simple format with lots of simple pictures and briefly told how we met and various events throughout our relationship. One of the cheaper gifts I have her and she hasn't stopped talking about it. So far I've received: a new Tennessee sweatshirt a football calendar for my desk at work three games: Monopoly Streets, MLB2k12, and MoH Warfighter. A new bowling ball Some coaching DVDs I've got suspicions of what lies ahead: a few other games I requested and a headset and perhaps a new controller for the Xbox. |
Ah, the woodgrain ones. 1961 was certainly a memorable season- is that the reason? Or is there a more personal reason?
I've always wanted to do a 1971 set just on degree of difficulty of getting a quality set. However, it was before my time so I don't have a personal connection to it. SI |

Very nice, Bucc. Earlier this year, I started piecing some sets together starting from 1988 and moving backward. The 1988 year was my first year I started collecting cards. I lost those cards due to the Mississippi flood in 93 for the most part. I had always wanted to try an rebuild that collection. One of my gifts for years to my dad has been various Bob Gibson baseball cards. My dad told me a few days ago that he wants to pass those cards on to my son. |

My goal is to complete all of the Topps sets from 1960-1986 in exmt-nmmt. I am about 85% done: 1967, 1968, 1971-1986 are completed, most of th rest are 40-91% complete except for 1965, 1966 which I have not started yet. 1962 is certainly a memorable set (Maris is my favorite Yankees) and close to done. 1960, 1961 and 1963 will be my next focus for completion. The iPhones purchase for the family certainly curtailed my collecting for a bit and I hope to get back into full swing very soon. What sets have you worked on? |

Poli, that is very cool. I wished my dad had collected since he was a Dodgers fans since the 1940s. Bob Gibson is probably my third favorite pitcher of all time (after Maddux and Seaver) and I have a lot of his cards except for the early years. |
Electric smoker. Can't wait to get some rib racks tomorrow and fire it up!
|
I got a tablet.
Money. Phone call from my brother. |
I'm hours away from family, in a town where I know very few people...so this was expected to be a crap Christmas. My girlfriend was working last night, and was having a rough night...so I decided to go and hangout until she got off from her shift. It started snowing, which made things awesome. We ended up coming back to my house and falling asleep on the couch, with the (fake) fireplace going and the tree lit up.
Best Christmas Eve I can remember having. Today has been really, really low-key...tonight may be spent out watching music and enjoying some pool at what has become my home pub...Kristy (gf) and I have a budding tradition of ending the night by getting kicked off the pool table. All-in-all, not a bad Christmas. Could be better, but I was expecting a lot worse. |

That really can't feel good on her back. |
Slippers.

2 Barbies
Hess Helicopter with the truck inside. Shitload of cookies. Buttload of lottery tickets. Winnipeg Jets Hat & Poster Nerf Basketball Mini Pool Table But none of that compares to the joy of winning $70 in my families post dinner poker game by crushing all of their smug asses. I actually cut the pot with my cousins husband when it was down to just us two because I actually like him and I had already taken out all my targets. And that doesn't compare to the look on my moms face when she opened the General Hospital, One Life To Live and All My Children scrapbooks I got her. I don't understand it but I guess if someone had given me NWA, Mid South and World Class Wrestling scrapbooks I'd have the same reaction. God, now I wish those things existed. |

I haven't done anything really since heading off to school. My parents want me to get them out of their house as we're making noise about getting a house in the next year. I have the late 80s mass-produced stuff as that was when I was a kid: 1987-1992 Topps for sure. I can't remember if I got 1986 or anything past then. Also, a few Fleer, Donruss, and Score from around then but that's it. I have an oddly large number of one of the early 80s Topps sets: 1980 or 1981, iirc. The 1971 set was just an odd idea based on how hard it would be. I guess doing the 1986 set would be a little like that. SI |
Two pairs of slippers (which is cool, I am always wearing slippers), a couple of long-sleeve shirts (one henley and one with a cool zip-up collar), GC to Home Depot, a Hickory Farms snack pack, Monopoly Millionaire (I really need to re-inventory my collection). Thankfully a lot less than in previous years.

Book (Chief Benders Burden) - I get biographies of players from Baseballs deadball era every year and this one really interests me as I haven't done a ton of research on Bender. All the kids were here except my son in the navy who is deployed right now, so perfect with that one exception since we missed out on having the grandkids as well who are back east and went to my daughter in laws parents place. Spending the Holiday with family was by far the best part, went way too fast though! Played Bloodbowl team manager for the first time as well, fun game and plays fairly quickly....of course I came in third :) |
UCLA Bruins "Sport"-ula
$300 worth of Amazon GC which I plan on using toward photography gear $50 Chevron GC Socks |
I got a card game, and a couple funny little things from the kids. My family has long since given up trading presents, there's way too many of us and no one can afford that. And my wife and I generally don't do anything--we're too busy dealing with taking care of the kids in the family. So it's just my wife's sister that I get anything from.
