Silly Strategies

ITT: we share silly, marginally useful or totally useless strategies we've come up with in FOF.

This thought occurred to me recently and I don't think I will try it, but you never know....

Useful, clever strategies also welcome if you got 'em. I don't though.

* Release & immediately re-sign a rookie draft pick (provided he's not angry at you). Some possibly useful (or maybe say, affinity only) players won't get mad. No other team will have an opportunity to swoop in and sign, unless you do this during the preTC->TC sim and there are teams below 46 on roster.

benefits You take on a cap hit (which may be completely minor if he's a later round, or esp 7th round pick) but you're probably going to pay this guy less in year 2 and year 3 as a RFA. Maybe much less. Also less in year 1.

You also get to play him in preseason to try and get him injured, without fear. Players with multi-year contracts are not releasable while injured, so you can get stuck with a guy you can't release or IR.

drawbacks He might be a guy who doesn't make your team, but you want him as insurance during the regular season in case injuries come up. Release him twice and he's probably much more likely to get mad at you.

There are leagues that have specific rules against this.

If anyone tried it in a league I was commissioner of, there would be a team available.

Rookies usually have a relatively big signing bonus for the kind of talent they have. With this cut and sign strategy, you're pulling forward the 3rd and later year signing bonus into year 2 of the contract. Additionally, most rookies are willing to reneg to a lower deal in their 2nd year, which increases their chances to make the team in the 2nd and 3rd year. Cap technically, I think it's a bad strategy.

But as Yoda put, I doubt any MP league would allow this (with or without any rules), as it sounds like a 'cheat'.

Vary between 100% run for every situation and 100% pass for every situation as offense, randomly changing it or not changing it in between games.

Some day when my entire team is terrible I might try this.
