Catalytic Converter Warranty Question

On the theory that FOFC knows all . . .

We have a 2004 Subaru Outback. In 2009, the catalytic converter crapped out. They are, however, covered under a federally mandated 8yr/80k warranty, so the dealer replaced it for free.

Today, it has crapped out again. And it costs $3,000 to fix. The car now has greater than 8yrs/80K on it, but the part has less than that.

So, anyone know about emissions warranties? Are we covered, or are we screwed?

Highly doubtful you will be covered. 3k seems pretty high. Is it more than just the converter ?

Warranty durations typically do not reset when a part is replaced, so you are probably out of luck.

As Lathum said, a catalytic converter replacement should cost far less than that estimate. I just had one replaced where I couldn't use an aftermarket one (thanks California!) and it cost about half your estimate (and thankfully insurance was paying).

Last time this happened, it was hella-expensive (though we didn't have to pay). Apparently, that's a Subaru thing.

Subaru exhaust systems are demons spawns from hell, they have to remove pretty much everything and replace it from the point where you need replacement all the way aft from there. its stupid and it sucks but thats what it is.

Warranties go with the car, not the part, so basically yer screwed.
