The next Batman and Superman movie

will be one and the same. It would be nice if the recent Superman movie went over much better.

Superman, Batman to unite on the big screen, Warner Bros. says - CNN.com

Quote:

This summer's Superman blockbuster is getting a sequel -- and it's going to unite the Man of Steel with the Caped Crusader for the first time on the big screen.
Warner Bros. Pictures announced Saturday at Comic-Con that Superman will pair with his fellow Justice League hero Batman in the upcoming yet-to-be-named film, expected to begin production in 2014.

"Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder will direct the film, and current Superman Henry Cavill will star, Warner Bros. said. The new Batman has yet to be cast.
Snyder's reimagining of Superman in "Man of Steel" broke the record for the biggest June opening, taking in $125.1 million in its first weekend. It has since raked in a total of $630 million worldwide, Warner Bros. said.

"Superman and Batman together on the big screen is a dream come true for DC (Comics) fans everywhere," said Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment.
Snyder told Comic-Con fans he's excited to work with Cavill again and take the story to the next chapter.

"It's beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest superheroes in the world," he said.

Snyder strongly hinted that the heroes will be rivals in the movie.

CNN partner Entertainment Weekly reported that "Man of Steel" actor Harry Lennix took the stage with Snyder and read a line from Frank Miller's 1986 book, "The Dark Knight Returns," in which Batman wages battle with the man from Krypton.

"I want you to remember, Clark. In all the years to come. In all your most private moments. I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you," Lennix read from the book.

Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane also return for the new film, Warner Bros. said.

Christian Bale, who starred as Batman in three film installments of "The Dark Knight," told Entertainment Weekly this month that he wouldn't be starring in a fourth. "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan also said he wasn't opting for a fourth movie in the franchise, the magazine said.

Nolan will, however, have a hand in the upcoming Superman-Batman film -- he's serving as one of the executive producers, Warner Bros. said.
Warner Bros. and DC Comics, the publisher of "Superman" titles, are both units of Time Warner, CNN's parent company.

It's going to be tough to pull off, but fingers crossed... I'm most looking forward to a potential Flash film TBH, but bring on Justice League already!

Zack Snyder again. Too bad.

Agreed.

I can't picture who can best Bale as Batman and especially as Bruce Wayne...

chinaski 07-21-2013 11:32 PM

Ive always hated the juxtaposition of superman/batman. And with Snyder directing, I have zero hope for this :/

They'll have to go a very distinctly different direction with Batman I think to make it not as comparable. Which is good, because the Batman you want in a Batman/Superman teamup is very different than what you want in a Batman-centered story, I think. I'm hoping they go that World's Finest sort of angle rather than the Frank Miller angle. That would be really bad I think.

law90026 07-22-2013 01:03 PM

I kinda wish they wouldn't go with a rival story. The Batman/Superman comics are actually really good (I think) and they show a really interesting interaction between the 2 iconic heroes.

Honolulu_Blue 07-22-2013 01:35 PM

I am not sure where all the Zack Snyder hate comes from.

I thought "Man of Steel" was decent. I loved Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead." I really liked "300" and "Watchmen" as well. I have never been able to watch all of "Sucker Punch", because it is so very, very horrible. It's a shit film. I never saw his animated owl movie.

So, even if we assume his animated owl movie sucks, 4 out of 6 aint bad.

Newb question: Why would Batman or Superman dislike one another? Aren't they all for the same kind of good?

I think it mostly has to do with their stark difference in personalities and sometimes they rub each other the wrong way even though they have mutual respect for each other. Superman gave Bruce kryptonite just in case since Superman knew Bruce would be the one person smart enough to stop him if need be.

Batman gave Lois Lane herpes and shit just blew up from there.

I loved Man of Steel and disliked the Dark Knight trilogy, so I'll just have to wait and see how this all turns out.

Groundhog 07-22-2013 07:43 PM

I have a friend who has been a hardcore Superman comic guy for a long, long time, and he thought that Snyder just got the character completely wrong and hated it, and that the editing was terrible (he gave me very detailed examples that I will keep an eye out for next time). This is pretty funny, and also sums up why my mate thinks they got it wrong:

I'm sure this Batman will be nothing like the Dark Knight version.

Izulde 07-23-2013 08:06 PM

300 and Watchmen were both terrible movies, esp. 300.

The normal scenario is that they work together, and that is what I hope they would depict in the story. However, it's typical in any "teamup" to have the heroes fight at first, so that's one reason they might. The ohter reason is pure fanservice -- people like X vs Y like "would superman beat batman?" or whatever, and so Superman and Batman is This is fueled by several instance sin teh comics where they've come to fight, particularly Dark Knight Returns, which they quoted in the conference. Batman's sort of the ultimate underdog, and so the idea of him taking on the golden boy and all his powers is a sort of fan favorite.

That said I sure hope they don't do it other than perhaps some sort of brief altercation. Focus on the friendship. If they make other movies they can build up to a fun faceoff down the line. but hollywood almost always blows their load too quick so I expect we'll get a stupid fight in this film.

Neuqua 07-23-2013 10:38 PM

Well, according to David Goyer (who helped write the Dark Knight Trilogy and wrote Man of Steel), they're tentatively naming the next film Batman vs. Superman so, uh, sorry Autumn.

It seems obvious to me that such a showdown becomes much more interesting after a movie or two of the two working together. You know they're friends, you know what they've been through, you know how well they know each other. And now because of (insert menace here which turns one of them bad) they have to face each other! Sometimes I wish I could make all Hollywood producers disappear.

Swaggs 08-22-2013 10:34 PM

The new Batman is.... Ben Affleck.

Ben Affleck Is Batman | Variety

Pretty good pick, I think. Some mention that his involvement could lead to his directing a Justice League movie.

Danny 08-22-2013 10:39 PM

So Matt Damon as superman?

Danny 08-22-2013 10:40 PM

Oh and this new movie is going to be awful. THank goodness for the Avangers / THor / Captain / Iron Man movies

Matthean 08-22-2013 11:53 PM

Maybe he's got something in him to pull this off, but I would much rather see him being behind the camera instead of it front of it.

SackAttack 08-23-2013 12:22 AM

Julio Riddols 08-23-2013 12:37 AM

HOLY FUCK, the same guy that brought Daredevil to life so vividly! Perfect choice.

Now if he were directing, I might see that as potentially good.

Izulde 08-23-2013 01:25 AM

Yeah the Facebook reactions seem to be mostly horror from my little corner of the social media world, but I loved Affleck as Daredevil. I also think he can't be much worse than Bale as Batman, who I didn't like at all in the role.

Overall, the contemporary Batman films are noted for odd and/or poor casting for the role, so at absolute worst, it's par for the course.

JonInMiddleGA 08-23-2013 02:13 AM

Affleck is Batman?

What's next, Hillary Clinton as Wonder Woman? Carrot Top as Hulk?

larrymcg421 08-23-2013 05:02 AM

The good thing about Affleck as Batman is that I can now avoid the movie. If they had actually cast someone good in the role, then I might be suckered into seeing more Zack Snyder nonsense.

A-Husker-4-Life 08-23-2013 01:44 PM

I guess they could have made a worse decision:

Tom Cruise as the batman or Will Smith

chadritt 08-23-2013 01:50 PM

Or a gay cowboy as the joker...or a Disney movie Princess as Catwoman...or a Newsie as Batman.

chadritt 08-23-2013 01:52 PM

Dola - or even worse they could have gotten the last John Connor as Batman. I mean...Terminator 4 was a disgrace to a once beloved franchise.

I thought Terminator 3 was even worse, frankly.

chadritt 08-23-2013 01:57 PM

it at least had a better ending.

Carrot top as Inspector Gadget though... I think that would be awesome.

mckerney 08-23-2013 03:38 PM

Most disappointing super hero casting since the guy who isn't Donald Glover was chosen to play Spiderman.

But really I probably wouldn't have seen the movie either way so I guess I don't really care.

I think the difference in all of those cases the person had legitimate acting skills. Ben doesn't have near the resume.

chadritt 08-23-2013 04:25 PM

except there was no difference, the castings were mostly met with hatred. Ledger in particular was considered to be an awful choice, though a lot of that just seemed straight up homophobic. Besides, Id argue Affleck has been a pretty good actor the last 6 or 7 years.

Julio Riddols 08-23-2013 04:42 PM

In movies he directs, he does fine.

Draft Dodger 08-23-2013 04:44 PM

honestly, if he doesn't do that horrible need-to-cough-so-bad voice that Christian Bale felt the need to do, he'll be fine.

Even though he wasn't gay? I actually thought he was a great pick for the role.

It seems I'm the only person in the world who thinks Affleck could be an OK Batman.

Neon_Chaos 08-23-2013 09:57 PM

I think he deserves a chance.

I actually liked Bale as Bruce Wayne but yeah his Batman voice absolutely pisses me off when I hear it.

Affleck? Meh....he's too old for the role to me. I'm sure he'll do a serviceable job with it but kind of reminds me of George Clooney as Batman...only without Clooney's screen presence.

Danny 08-23-2013 11:10 PM

Wow, I loved Bale as Batman / Bruce.

The story for this one (supposedly) is that Batman is older. Possibly even retired.

I think he'll be perfectly mediocre- not good and not bad. The movie will not be good and he'll get a disproportionate amount of blame.

Nope. I think he could be decent, too.
