Live long and prosper, Prince to be Named Later

Figured we have a Death Crier, so we might as well have a birth announcement.

"Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4:24 PM today."

By the time he'll be in a position of power I'll likely be dead. Just kind of an odd thought really.

OldGiants 07-22-2013 07:22 PM

We fought a war so we don't have to give a shit about royal babies.

ISiddiqui 07-22-2013 11:30 PM

Yeah, we just decided to treat our Presidency with the worship of a pseudo-monarchy instead :p.

The Brits have announced they're sending the baby to the US to fufill the trade from 1812, as the newborn is the PTBNL (that is, Prince to Be Named Later)

Izulde 07-23-2013 12:23 AM

It's so wonderful to see monarchy still alive, even if in unfortunately a ceremonial role only in most places.

Let's forget this foolish monarchy-idolizing, so we can get back to the Kardashians.

Young Drachma 07-23-2013 08:41 PM

I like this idea of keeping people in naming suspense. Given the names people choose these days, seems more folks might want to do that.

Izulde 07-24-2013 10:08 AM

Well if they name him South and he goes to a Kanye West concert, people could say that North and South are together again.

Butter 07-24-2013 10:27 AM

I am hoping for "Beetle Bailey."

Meh.

molson 07-24-2013 12:57 PM

I like that they went old-school and royal instead of trendy like "Mason" or "Ethan".

Summer of George!!!

Autumn 07-24-2013 01:21 PM

That's a lot of naming pressure, when you stop and think about it. You're deciding the name of a king that's going to be in history books, to some degree. Do you follow up with another George, throw in a new name, it's crazy.

Has anybody here ever named their kid two days after they showed up? Is that a common thing?

It's not entirely unheard of with common folk -- I've known a few people over the years who were 24 hours or more before officially settling on a name -- but it actually seems pretty normal for at least the Brit royalty.

sterlingice 07-24-2013 01:48 PM

Had to get it through the focus groups first?

I did some google searching on this. Apparently, it's far more "common" than I thought. There were people who said they wanted to take said kid home and "try their name on" for a bit. Like see whether the kid grew into their name.

So apparently it does happen for commoners.

digamma 07-24-2013 02:10 PM

Eff, Maryland's already given the kid a county.

digamma 07-24-2013 02:10 PM

and our goddaughter was named after a day or two.

Passacaglia 07-24-2013 02:31 PM

A Prince with no name? That sounds familiar.

King of New York 07-24-2013 02:43 PM

Phooey, I just lost ten dollars--I bet that his name was going to be Carlos Danger.

Honolulu_Blue 07-24-2013 08:43 PM

North of the Wall they don't name kids until they're two.

Now I think we can call him the "royal" formerly known as Prince.

"Believe it or not, George isn't home.
Please leave a message after beep.
I must be out or I'll pick up the phone.
Where could I be?
Believe it or not, I'm not home."
