The earthquake was about 800km and several islands away.

We're good in Metro Manila.

I noticed it was far from Manilla, just didn't know if you had family/friends in the area. ;)

So far so good. Looks like Metro Manila will not be bearing the brunt of the storm.

I'm just going to post the intro to Jeff Masters's blog today. You pick out what seems the scariest if you lived in the Philippines:

Is is the strongest cyclone in world history as he emphasized? Is it the average winds of 96 mph before they lost touch with the city? Or was it that when the strongest part of the storm got there, it would be 195 mph? Or the 235 mph gusts? Later it talks about a 17' storm surge at Guiuan? Or the fact that it probably experienced the worst wind damage of anywhere in modern history? The making landfall at peak strength? This one's bad. I don't see Jim Cantore standing on the coast waiting for this one.

No. :) The main cities and suburbs have buildings built from cement, meant to withstand storms year in and year out.

Our house is primarily cement, and the worst damage we ever got was that sheet roofing dislodged.

The ones in the provinces are the shabbily built houses.

We are just getting the heavy rain in Manila, 12 hours after the storm made landfall in te eastern part of the country. Not much wind, but we're just getting it from the northern end of the storm.

Goddamn. This is a lot of rain.

Not sure how much media is going out of the country, but the level of devastation in the hard hit areas is unspeakable.

There were fucking mini tornadoes spawning inside the storm. Wtf.

Happens with hurricanes here sometimes, not surprising that it would happen with this storm I guess.

Glad you're okay in the city. Also spent the morning getting updated on a friend's parents who just traveled there (church mission maybe? unclear) a few days ago, they're apparently fine too.

Very small world these days, 20 years ago the odds of me knowing anyone there (or being aware they were there at least) seem like they would have been very small.

Tho, as stated- it's pretty crazy to think about sustained 195mph winds- how would you even notice.

Actually- that's something that's boggling my mind a little. Where specifically are the sustained 195 mph winds? Is it within 5 miles of the eyewall? One mile? It takes many hours for a hurricane to pass over you so if you're right at the coast, does your windspeed (if measured accurately- and I realize machines break during this sort of thing) look something like this:
0000: 45mph SW (keep increasing)
0400: 65 mph SW
0800: 85 mph SW
1000: 105 mph SW
1030: 125 mph SW
1045: 145 mph SW
1055: 165 mph SW
1056: 175 mph SW
1057: 185 mph SW
1058: 190 mph SW
1059: 195 mph SW
1100: calm (eye)
1105: calm (eye)
1106: 195 mph NE
and so on...

Never experienced anything like this yet, but am flying out to Vietnam tomorrow, landing Sunday evening. Haiyan is due to hit Vietnam on Sunday, albeit forecast to be reduced to Cat3.

If it were a US hurricane, the hurricane hunters would have dropped dropsondes for measuring winds and pressure as they worked their way around the storm. Quickly checking Wikipedia, it simply says the 195 number was a one-minute estimate from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Hawaii. Reports have said that it pegged out on the Dvorak satellite measurements and maybe a little more even.

There is a subtle difference in how wind speeds are measured by various services. The US services tend to take a much shorter sampling time (three minutes) compared to many foreign services (up to ten minutes in some cases). So, the US measurement is usually more accurate for determining the maximum intensity in any one moment of the storm (and thus the potential for catastrophic damage in any one place), but the foreign measurement will probably better recognize the general strength of a storm across a much larger area (and thus the general damage sustained across the larger area of the storm's impact). The 195 measurement was with the US standard. Asian services were reporting lower wind speeds and a maximum intensity of 145 because of the differences in estimates.

Those winds will likely be felt probably in some corridor a few miles or so outside the edge of the eye itself. I don't think it's simply 165 to calm in no time flat, but a fairly rapid increase and then decrease from the general windfield of the storm to the eyewall area and then to the eye itself.

The 10,000 number is just from one single province. The hardest hit. Police are unable to grt solid numbers due to cut off communications.

My brother's girlfriend and her family live in Tacloban. We still haven't heard any news of them, and my brother is really freaking out now.
