IWS #219 - The Results

Stupid is going through a mid-life crisis, and decides to create the greatest rock band in history. For all questions, the person can be living or dead. Assume Stupid has a time machine.

1. Stupid starts out by recruiting the greatest lead singer of all time. Who does Stupid get?

11 - Freddie Mercury
5 - Mick Jagger
5 - Robert Plant
3 - John Lennon
1 - Eddie Vedder
1 - Elvis Presley
1 - Kurt Cobain
1 - Ozzy Osbourne
1 - Roger Daltrey

I thought there would be much more variety than this. Freddie Mercury winning wasn't a shock, but I thought it would be closer.

2. Now Stupid needs a guitarist. Which guitar player is playing the hot licks for Stupid's band?

15 - Jimi Hendrix
3 - Eddie Van Halen
3 - Eric Clapton
2 - Jimmy Page
2 - Slash
1 - Dave Navarro
1 - George Harrison
1 - Jeff Beck
1 - Keith Richards

An eliminator, and one that I didn't see coming. I thought it would be a battle between Van Halen, Clapton, and Page. Then I saw the first Jimi Hendrix answer, and realized I forgot a biggie. I would have done poorly on my own IWS.

3. Somebody needs to set the beat. Which drummer did Stupid get to sit at the back of the stage?

12 - John Bonham
6 - Neil Peart
3 - Dave Grohl
2 - Keith Moon
2 - Ringo Starr
1 - Rick Allen
1 - Tommy Lee
1 - Travis Barker
1 - Vinny Paul

Another one that surprised me. I didn't think Bonham would be a runaway winner. I figured it would be a three way battle between Bonham, Peart, and Moon.

4. Stupid needs a bassist to hold everything together. Who is laying down the groove for the band?

10 - Flea
6 - John Entwistle
4 - Geddy Lee
3 - John Paul Jones
3 - Paul McCartney
1 - Jack Bruce
1 - P-Nut
1 - Slash

In yet another "shows how much I know" category, I thought this would be an eliminator with Flea. Turns out, this was the closest of the four band members. And I was shocked that Les Claypool didn't get a single vote, and surprised the nobody mentioned Cliff Burton.

5. Stupid is in awe of this collection of musicians, and has to get in on the act. What instrument is Stupid playing in the band alongside the other musicians?

15 - Keyboards/Piano
8 - Guitar/Rhythm Guitar
5 - Cowbell
1 - Skin Flute :nono:

This one played out like I expected.

6. Stupid is not very creative. He knows he needs a cool name for his band, but can't think of one. He decides to rip off a name from a real band. What real band name does Stupid think is the coolest?

7 - The Beatles
4 - Led Zeppelin
3 - Guns N' Roses
3 - Metallica
3 - The Who
2 - The Rolling Stones
1 - Fishbone
1 - Gwar
1 - Nirvana
1 - Pearl Jam
1 - Radiohead
1 - Slayer
1 - The Band

I intended this one to be spread all over the place, and it was. Turns out that Stupid likes the names of the big hitters. In hindsight, I didn't like this question, and wished I had used "Name a songwriter" instead. That would have been more interesting, I think.

Finally, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin were the only bands to have all of their members, as well as their band name, mentioned. The Rolling Stones, Cream, Rush, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, and The Who also had multiple members chosen.

On to the final tally...

Congratulations to DougW, with a late entry to steal the win from britrock88. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Wow. Freddie/Hendrix/Bonham/Entwistle/Keys/Zeppelin here. Four firsts and two seconds and it doesn't win!

So, DougW, who'd you have--Jagger or Plant? :D

And thanks for an entertaining IWS, Umbrella!

Alf 05-19-2014 02:10 PM

Feck, I should have gone with my guts and put Mick Jagger / Flea instead of Elvis (doh, bad !) and Entwistle.

korme 05-19-2014 02:13 PM

I nailed everything except for John Bonham (went Grohl) and the Beatles (Rolling Stones).

Thought about going Beatles just bc of their overall historic popularity, but I thought with the Stones still performing and having the iconic rock magazine name, they'd get more love than me + 1 other.

This was a great IWS, Umbrella

MIJB#19 05-19-2014 02:28 PM

Ah, my Beatles only approach failed. :D

The dreaded "go with your first thought" downfall.

Gut said Freddie Mercury & Flea...talked myself out of both.

:banghead:

flere-imsaho 05-19-2014 03:01 PM

I talked myself out of Bonham, thinking the recency of Peart would make that the correct answer. But FOFC likes its classic rock.

I talked myself out of Flea, thinking that even Stupid couldn't be that stupid. Stupid.

DougW 05-19-2014 03:42 PM

My first win here fellas, so if I am responsible for moving the game forward (pretty sure I am) - I'd appreciate a breakdown of what I may need to know.

IE : How long I have, scoring, etc. Thx :).

Scoring is just multiplying how many points someone scored for each question. So someone who answered Mercury, Hendrix, Bonham, Flea, Cowbell, and Beatles would have scored 11x15x12x10x5x7.

I also talked myself out of Mercury because I didn't think Stupid would be on board with the whole sexuality aspect.

Umbrella 05-19-2014 07:22 PM

Another thing that could have made this one a little more interesting is if I put the stipulation that the musician had to be alive. Most of the picks were deceased.

If only he'd died of cancer, some factions of FOFC would like him better

Great IWS Umbrella.
Freddie Mercury completely slipped my mind. Not sure I would have picked him, but still surprised I missed it completely.

You have as long as you need, really. Spend enough time to devise a decent set of questions without too many eliminators (as much as you can help it). Grab the first post from the main thread, add yourself to the hall of heroes, and get your IWS out there long enough for 20-plus submissions to come in (a week or so). Then get ready to brush off your Excel skills. :)

Ditto for my completely off answers... I thought Barker may actually get another vote other than mine though.

sterlingice 05-21-2014 10:28 AM

Yeah, someone hook him up with the IWS spreadsheet. All you have to do is enter answers and it automatically tallies the score. PM me with an email address to send it to and I can email it to you.

SI

This board needs more Rush fans

I have it fellas, Umbrella was nice enough to shoot it over my way.

britrock88 05-21-2014 12:57 PM

Seriously? I figured that the spreadsheet was an inside joke at this point.
