Windows 7 bsod help
It's been a while since I had to mess with anything on my desktop pc. Last night I let run a windows update and this morning it was a continuous cycle of rebooting-safe mode-bsod. The screen references win32k. I checked the bios and all disk drives and memory are there. I don't remember what to do now to diagnose and recover. Help please?

One possibility is corrupted files on the hard drive. Have you run chkdsk on your hard drive?
|
Ha, I see it is Windows 7 - I'd be guessing one of the boot files is corrupted. Might be as easy as over writing it. You'll probably have to do it through the dos prompt. Then again, if you have your disk handy, you could probably just put that in and repair from there.

It's 7. How do I get a prompt to run chkdsk?
|
If you have the install disk, boot with that and select 'Repair Windows'. If you don't, reboot and keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Boot Options appears, and you can select Repair Your Computer. From there one of the options is Command Prompt

I'll try that tonight. Thanks.

I hope you figured it out, Bucc. I had the same problem. I booted up from my Windows disc and ran the repair program, but it said it found nothing wrong. So I ran System Restore and picked the day before the update. That worked.

My wife's computer had this a couple of weeks ago. I restored from a save point before the update and its worked fine since. I think I read the other day that Microsoft has released some bad patches lately.

Sorry, forgot to provide an update. I had to boot from cd and was pleasantly surprised with all of the options it gave me. I went through all and it detected a hardware problem as well as could not restore from an earlier point. I did a chkdsk and something else. Eventually it went ahead and did a restore in the background (unbeknownst to me) and all of the problems did clear themselves up. I did apply the latest update (took about 2 hours) and all has been well since then. Thanks all for your help and I would follow the example of Chesapeake and shepp and focus on the restore point.
