History in the (re)Making (FBCB)

The premise of this “Dynasty Report” is to create a NCAA historical save with 99% fictional characters with several real life coaches and players sprinkled in. I feel very comfortable editing coaches but with players I do not. Largely in part because it is very easy to set off the balance of the game by overpowering players unknowingly. So for the most part I will only add in superstars and the occasional player that I enjoyed following. I may also just change a player’s name, location, re-allocate ratings, etc. to sprinkle in recruits as we go. Some that come to mind are Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, Garnett, etc.

For the first few years I will have early entries starting after their junior season to replicate the trends but in a few years I will enable high school players to go pro which will likely make editing a Kobe, Lebron, etc. a waste of time but to me the potential reward is worth the potential waste.

I will start with the 1986-87 season and my current plan is to begin with an all-CPU world until Tom Izzo, John Calipari, or Roy Williams get their first head coaching job and start my HUMAN career from there. These guys are probably going to take jobs after the first season at lower level jobs than they did in real life but who knows. My preference would be to go with Izzo, then Williams, then Calipari but it is no big deal either way.

Real life players that are included so far:

David Robinson, Sr., Navy
Armen Gilliam, Sr., UNLV
Danny Manning, Jr., Kansas
Gary Payton, Fr., Oregon State
Derrick Coleman, Fr., Syracuse
Steve Alford, Sr., Indiana
Hank Gathers, rSo. (transfer-redshirt), Loyola Marymount
Bo Kimble, rSo. (transfer-redshirt), Loyola Marymount
Larry Johnson, Class of '87 (risk of non-qualification)
Shaquille O'Neal, Class of '88

My goal is by the time I get to modern day that the league take its own path while resembling real life re-alignment along the way and some minor influence in how things go. My biggest plan of influence is on coaching, so I’ve edited the following coaches to be in game (current school):

Bob Huggins, Akron
Lute Olson, Arizona
Nolan Richardson, Arkansas
Jim Larranaga, Bowling Green
Charlie Coles, Central Michigan
Jim Calhoun, Connecticut
Mike Krzyzewski, Duke
John Thompson, Georgetown
Dick Bennett, Green Bay
Tim Floyd, Idaho
Lou Henson, Illinois
Bob Knight, Indiana
Tom Davis, Iowa
Lon Kruger, Kansas State
Larry Brown, Kansas
Bill Self, Kansas (assistant)

Eddie Sutton, Kentucky
Fran McCaffery, Lehigh
Denny Crum, Louisville
Paul Westhead, Loyola Marymount
Jud Heathcote, Michigan State
Tom Izzo, Michigan State (assistant)

Clem Haskins, Minnesota
Norm Steward, Missouri
Jerry Tarkanian, UNLV
Dean Smith, North Carolina
Roy Williams, North Carolina (assistant)

Gary Williams, Ohio State
Ralph Miller, Oregon State
Jim Harrick, Pepperdine
John Calipari, Pittsburgh (assistant)

Pete Carril, Princeton
Rick Pitino, Providence
Gene Keady, Purdue
PJ Carlesimo, Seton Hall

Top 5 Capsules:

Iowa Hawkeyes (Big Ten)

The Hawkeyes are led by a dominant front court, anchored by senior center Garth Donner. Donner is a force on the boards and defensively. Their backcourt is no slouch either - lead by a pair of great ball handlers in seniors Greg Ardoin and Charles Rager. The time is now for the Hawkeyes.

UNLV Rebels (PCAC)

The Rebels are at least 10 deep with plenty of potential to go. Leading the way is senior forward Armen Gilliam, the projected lottery pick is a leading candidate to win Player of the Year. Junior guard Wade Donaldson is an elite shooter, ball handler, and defender. The experts are predicting a 38-0 season, can they live up to the hype?

Indiana Hoosiers (Big Ten)

Steve Alford headlines this group but don't sleep on the rest of their backcourt. This veteran bunch should be on a collision course with the Hawkeyes for the Big Ten title but who could defend Donner?

Purdue Boilermakers (Big Ten)

Gene Keady's bunch isn't as talented as the Iowa or Indiana but they have great length and a superstar in Matt Solano. The 6'7" guard is a top flight scorer but he doesn't have much help on the offensive end. At first glance this team looks to be over rated.

Alabama Crimson Tide (SEC)

The Crimson Tide have a player of the year candidate at point guard with senior Charles Hersey. He can do it all - look for him to go for a triple double on any given night. However, after him there isn't much in terms of SEC talent --- that should tell us how much hype there is around him.

I am still debating if I want to sell my soul to the devil and take control of John Calipari or wait for Roy Williams or Tom Izzo to make a move. The first offseason there are always very few moves so I feel comfortable that holding out 1 more year would be OK. However, I am going to sleep on it. The advantage with Calipari is he is already an A- recruiter and he got a decent job to start.

My apologies for the long delay, I was stumped on how I wanted to proceed. I have decided to takeover Paul Westhead for now and see what I can do with Loyola Marymount. Gathers and Kimble...can we recreate history? Once those 2 leaves I will turn him back to CPU.

The following real life players are high school seniors:

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf
Christian Laettner
Alonzo Mourning
Billy Owens
Anthony Peeler
Malik Sealy
Todd Day
LaPhonso Ellis
Shawn Kemp
Lee Mayberry
Chris Mills
Stanley Roberts

A heavy Big Ten presence again this year, it should be another blood bath in the league.

Loyola-Marymount

The Lions are coming off a horrible 9-21 season but there is great hope for the immediate future with the eligibility of forward Hank Gathers and guard Bo Kimble. Westhead plans to continue his uptempo, sometimes chaotic, style of play and has high expectations due to the arrival of the two USC transfers.

Points Guards

Steven George, Sr.
5'11", 174 lbs from Grass Valley, CA
George is one of 4 returning starters on the roster. He is a good free throw shooter and a reliable ball handler and defender. He possess elite athletic ability.
1986-7 Stats: 30 GS, 8.2 ppg

Allan Scott, Jr.
6'0", 188 lbs from Mendocino, CA
Scott is a reliable shooter and ball handlers but a liability on the defensive end. His defense may limit his playing time.
1986-7 Stats: 30 GP, 4.1 ppg, 1.4 apg

Delbert Roth, rSo.
6'3", 206 lbs from Riverside, CA
Roth is a great ball handler, specifically his passing ability stands out. The rest of his game is shaky at best.
1986-7 Stats: 20 GP, 2.8 ppg

Shooting Guards

Bo Kimble, rSo.
6'4", 186 lbs from Philadelphia, PA
Kimble's presence in the lineup will instantly make the Lions a contender in the league. He is a very good all-around player with the ability to score at will. He should excel in this offense. The staff was focused in the offseason on his conditioning to push the limits on court time.

Gil Wilkey, Fr. (3-star recruit)
6'0", 174 lbs from Apple Valley, CA
Wilkey will be forced into action out of need. He is actually a gifted scorer and a good defender but he is so sloppy with the ball it is hard to keep him on the floor.

Small Forward

Thomas Lacey, Fr. (3-star recruit)
6'6", 230 lbs from San Bernardino, CA
Lacey sure could use a year to develop before getting thrown into the starting lineup but he has a great upside and right now he is one of the better players on the team.

Donovan Banner, rSr.
6'4", 217 lbs from El Centro, CA
Banner doesn't excel at anything and he isn't horrible at anything. He is just so-so at everything. He will buy us some minutes.
1986-7 Stats: 30 GS, 8.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg

Odis Marable, rJr.
6'7", 238 lbs from Sacramento, CA
Marable is a defensive specialist, who plays average defense at best. Great free throw shooter!
1986-7 Stats: 30 GP, 3.5 ppg, 2.2 rpg

Power Forwards

Hank Gathers, rSo.
6'7", 229 lbs from Philadelphia, PA
Gathers is a force on the glass to go along with his outstanding scoring ability. The combination of Kimble and Gathers makes the Lions a contender to go deep into March.

Eugene Brien, Jr.
6'8", 256 lbs from Belmont, CA
Brien is a reliable defender and rebounder but an offensive liability.
1986-7 Stats: 30 GS, 4.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg

Cory Murray, Jr.
6'5", 227 lbs from Redondo Beach, CA
Hope he transfers...
1986-7 Stats: 30 GP, 2.2 rpg

Centers

Gary Reel, Sr.
6'9", 242 lbs from Long Beach, CA
Reel started due to injuries late in the season. There really isn't much about his game to talk about in a positive manner.
1986-7 Stats: 30 GP, 18 GS, 3.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg

Kevin John, rFr.
6'7", 229 lbs from Simi Valley, CA
John may very well take the starting job from Reel before this season is over. He doesn't have a lot of game either but he can least rebound and block shots at a decent level.

Team Schedule

I duplicated as much of the non-conference schedule as I could but had to throw in a few extra games.

November 1987

Recruiting

The Lions strike out on their 2 biggest targets but they remain in the hunt for Marco Flores, a 5'11" point guard from Bakersfield, CA. However, rumors are he is leaning towards San Diego over LMU.

Coach Westhead is scrambling to make something out of this class.

Elsewhere...
Stanley Roberts has signed with Florida over Indiana, Duke, and North Carolina.
LaPhonso Ellis has signed with Missouri over Kansas and Iowa.
Chris Mills has signed with UNLV.
Lee Mayberry has signed with Oklahoma.
Christian Laettner has signed with Pittsburgh over Indiana.
Alonzo Mourning has signed with North Carolina.
Malik Sealy has signed with Syracuse.
Todd Day has signed with Indiana.
Anthony Peeler has signed with Kansas.
Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf has signed with Florida over Alabama.
**Abdul-Rauf and Roberts played together at LSU in real life, ironic that they end up together again but this time at Florida.

Shawn Kemp remains unsigned - he has narrowed his list to Illinois and Purdue.
Billy Owens remains unsigned - however, he is expected to sign with Pittsburgh soon but North Carolina and Michigan are still pursuing him.

Recruiting

Marco Flores ends up signing with the Lions! This is a big signing for a team that could really use a solid point guard.

Elsewhere...
Shawn Kemp signs with Illinois.
Billy Owens signs with Pittsburgh. He joins Christian Laettner in one of the nation's top classes.
