A list of all sports games/series?

I was thinking with the One Hit Wonder tournament hitting the later rounds, what we could do after that, and one possibility is a Sports Game Tournament. So, I thought to try to get a list of sports sims/game series for such a tournament.

This is just off the top of my head, I'm sure you guys will come up with a bunch I missed

Soccer:
Championship Manager
Football Manager (not sure if they should be combined, they tried to continue the CM series after the SI Games split)
Sensible Soccer
Goal/One-Nil
FIFA
Pro Evolution Soccer

High Heat
Hardball
MLB The SHow
MVP Baseball
OOTP Baseball
PureSim Baseball

Again, I just tried to come up with a list of video games off the top of my head. I'm sure there's going to be a ton that I missed.

NobodyHere 01-11-2020 02:08 PM

Just a thought but is there room in there for e-sports games like FPSs and MOBAs?

SirFozzie 01-11-2020 02:11 PM

Um... I think if we were doing a COMPUTER/VIDEO game tournament then yes, but not in a Sports game tournament.

Couple more I thought of:

Hyperblade
Chaos League

More forgotten games:

Maximum Football (I know, shame on me)
Axis Football
Mutant League Hockey
Bill Lambeer's Combat Basketball
Road Rash/Road Redemption

albionmoonlight 01-11-2020 02:30 PM

There was that Blitz football game

Carman Bulldog 01-11-2020 03:07 PM

How could you omit MAXIMUM FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!! (Edit: I see you added it in your later post)

I'll note at the outset that it might be worth considering specific years rather than a series, ie. NHL 94, NFL2k5, NBA Live 95, Madden 2004(?), etc. to determine the best sports video game of all time. Additionally, to avoid duplicates and depending on how long you want to stretch this out, you could have a selection process for each series. I'm not thinking a tournament, but rather a poll with say the consensus top 5-10 Madden's on it. Winner gets entered into the tournament as the Madden entry.

Additionally, I'll add these games/series as options (man, when counting your list and this, I've played a lot of different sports video games in my lifetime)...

Baseball
RBI Baseball (NES)
Little League World Series (NES)
MLB Power Pros (Wii)
World Series Baseball (Genesis)
Ken Griffey Jr Baseball (Super NES)
Triple Play (Genesis)

Football
NFL 95 (Genesis) [this is basically Joe Montana 95]
NFL Blitz (Arcade)

Basketball
Coaching a Dynasty (PC)

Hockey
2 on 2 Open Ice Challenge (Arcade)
Hit the Ice (Arcade)
Eastside Hockey Manager (PC)

Other Games (admittedly some of these fit into what might be a "sports" game)
Wii Sports (Wii)
Super Dodgeball (NES)
Super Spike V-Ball (NES)
Mario Kart (Nintendo)
Super Off-Road (Arcade)
Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat (Arcade)
Rocket League (PS4/XBox One)
Virtua Tennis (Dreamcast)
Tony Hawk Pro Skater (PS)
WWE 2K (PS4/XBox One)
WWF No Mercy (n64)
Mike Tyson's Punchout (NES)
Hot Shots Golf (PS/PS2)
Tiger Woods Golf (various)
Extreme Warfare/Total Extreme Wrestling (PC)
Pride FC (PS2)
UFC Undisputed (PS3/Xbox)
Knockout Kings (PS)

Carman Bulldog 01-11-2020 03:12 PM

Uproxx ran a similar tournament a few years ago so you might want to look at that as well for any that may have been missed.

Swaggs 01-11-2020 03:14 PM

Baseball Mogul was a good one for a long time.

rjolley 01-11-2020 03:14 PM

I would add the following:

College Hoops series from 2K
Fast Break Basketball (Pro and College) from Grey Dog Software/Brian Nichols

Baseball Mogul from Sports Mogul/Clay Dreslough

CU Tiger 01-11-2020 03:43 PM

two quick ones
tony larussa basball
troy aikman nfl football

what ws the NES baseball game played by robots that if you hit a playr theyd fight and kill or injure your robot and then youd end up with, for example a fist basemen with no arms for an inning?

Vince, Pt. II 01-11-2020 03:48 PM

Baseball Simulator 2.000

Sick as a Parrot was a soccer sim, if I remember correctly.

Groundhog 01-11-2020 03:49 PM

Jump Shot Basketball was the first text sim to get me hooked.

AlexB 01-11-2020 04:31 PM

World Championship Boxing Manager was a great game: PilotMan’s dynasty on this game was awesome!

Cricket Captain and Cricket Coach are the two best cricket games

A couple of other good early (ZX Spectrum!) soccer management games
Tracksuit Manager
The Double

And Test Match will always have a place in my heart (ZX Spectrum cricket game)

SirFozzie 01-11-2020 04:32 PM

Radio Baseball, along with the original NFL Football Sim was two of the first sims I ever played.

And the fact that Front Page Sports Football/Baseball hadn't appeared on my list yet is shameful to me.

JPhillips 01-11-2020 04:46 PM

Soccer
New Star
Football Tactics and Glory

Pro Cycling Manager
Really, really old but so am I: Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics (hopefully someone close to my age remembers what I'm talking about)

SirFozzie 01-11-2020 09:45 PM

PGA Tour Golf (Genesis)
NFL Challenge by XOR is what I mean by NFL Football (sim) above

Probably 96 (32 seeded games, 64 games playoff to join the seeded games in the round of 64) or 128 games

SirFozzie 01-12-2020 12:44 PM

This is what I'm currently thinking would be the 32 seeded games:

Seeds (in no particular order)

Football Manager
FIFA

OOTP Baseball
Front Office Football (hometeam seed)
Epyx Summer/Winter Games

MIJB#19 01-18-2020 11:41 AM

Sensible Soccer has to include Sensible World of Soccer as part of the series. I'm afraid this crowd will be too unfamiliar with it to give it the right kudos, but I'll vote in favor of SWOS against anything it might face.

California Games.

I played so many of the PC games that were dropped here, but Earl Weaver Baseball II was the start for me. I remember spending a snow day working on custom updated rosters. I didn't get too far. I was just 12 lol

NFL 2k5 has a 2023 NFL and college mod available. I haven't played it myself but details are available at the mod's Discord.

I played a full AL schedule with 2 friends. We manually entered all the rosters, and then played every game individually (there wasn't a fast sim available then). It was quite the project, I believe about 1,000 games. We'd take turns with the disc.

Then my friend somehow overwrote the Angels about 3/4 of the way through the season, so the stats were all screwed up. LOL

Here's an interesting looking college football game that is hoping to be released in late December. The developer had previously released mobile games. I think it is expected to cost $12.

I bought the game upon release (15% off at $10.19 until 19 December) and I am still fumbling my way around. I started at 2* New Mexico State and set most of the settings to auto-recruit and autosim for game play.

It is still very early days but I see a lot of promise. There are a few vagaries of the game being in Early Access like a restriction of 96 teams to a universe and a few other settings for team/conference that are not 100% realistic but I do see a lot of promise.

I expect that the developer will implement a lot of desired changes and turn it into a full on NCCAA universe. It is not there yet but it won't be far off.

The $12 release cost of the game is expected to be maintained beyond Early Access. Whether you buy now or wait for further developments shouldn't be affected by price.

It is not there right now but I do think that it will improve with time.

I bought it as well and first of all I would say its a no brainer for me, especially for the $12 cost, people will definitely get their money's worth. The developer is very active in the discord community and appears to be open to improvements which is always good.

However with that said, I kind of picked up on that the goal is not to make this a full NCAA real experience so I am not sure how close it will ever become. Seems the goal was to keep things less complex so not really sure how close it will ever be in the areas that are currently under represented. But even with that, I still think it's a good game and worth playing even if it never adds a ton more. Some of the things I have seen so far would include.

- Roster sizes don't appear to be as large as real life
- Not the same amount of teams and conferences
- Currently no ability to add real logos, fields, etc. (can add real names through a custom league)
- Players are put into position groups, versus specific positions. For example, no difference in offensive line positions, linebackers, kickers, etc.
- During a game, no penalties called. Haven't seen the ability to call a time out, unless I missed it. Going to guess there are other limitations with playing a game that I haven't seen yet but doesn't concern me as much since I usually just sim things so I'll just need to use my imagination
- No sound in the game. I am not talking game sounds, literally no sounds at all as you do anything. Not a huge deal, but not sure I have seen a game where it is completely silent (not sure if your clicking on something).

I really like how they kept game planning really simple, basically setting a number of high-level categories versus going crazy with deep and situational setup which always overwhelmed me in other games. Seems to have reasonable recruiting including NIL you can provide to players. Boosters are in the game to give you goals where you could benefit. Has coaching Carousel and a bunch of other stuff. The user interface is fairly clean although as already mentioned some QOL things certainly could further enhance the experience. The stats and history seem reasonable and does have awards system. When you start a league you can also choose from two options, either school dynasty where you simply play at the same school forever or coach dynasty where you are a coach that can go from team to team to build a career. Also can customize how many teams make the playoffs.

No regrets in buying and again I think already worth the $12 (if not more). However, if not being exactly like real life NCAA bothers people, then those people may want to think twice since not sure it will ever provide the full experience. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

I played the hell out of his mobile app (and alerted the community here awhile back about this PC version as well), so much so that I actually downloaded bluestacks to be able to play the mobile game on my pc so I will definitely be purchasing this. I prefer the less complex route he has taken (from what I've read below with the PC game as well). Everything noted in the reviews below are consistent with my experience with the app (but the PC version looks to have a lot more detail, configuration, programming, etc).

LastWhiteSoxFanStanding 12-13-2022 05:19 PM

In the old days, this game would have its own thread and at least 50 replies by now.

c'est la fof.

I didn't know where else to put this but I found this interesting game concept. I haven't had much of a chance to play it yet but the developer made a Football Manager type game in Excel. If nothing else, I'm going to use it to pick up some Excel tricks.

I got sick of waiting for Football Manager 2025 – so I made my own version in Excel. – The StoryTeller
