Quick Question - AOL / Netscape

Does anybody know if Netscape is owned by AOL?

I do believe AOL/Time Warner did purchase them in the battle against MSN and I.E.

I'll have to double check though.

I still prefer Netscape, but every time they add more AOL crap to it, they push me towards IE (or Opera).

When my Windows XP got "compromised" a couple of weeks ago and I was unable to surf the web with IE (or use Outlook Express or Windows Media Player), I had to download Netscape and all of its counterparts just to function. I found it to be quite a bit slower than IE. After I re-formatted my hard drive and got everything back to normal, I'm back to IE. The difference is amazing.

I just can't do IE anymore...when you behold the wonders of tabbed browsing and pop-up killing, it's hard to go back.

I originally preferred Netscape to IE when I first started web browsing (around '97 or so) - I thought it ran smoother, and I preferred the interface. Even after I started at MS as a contractor, I continued to use Netscape despite the occasional odd looks from co-workers. However, increasing difficulties with Netscape (crashes, slow loading) pushed me to switch to IE around mid '99. I was surprised at how much better IE performed compared to Netscape, and I got used to the interface.

However, I think it's time for IE to make another leap forward to compete with Opera and the other new browsers. With all the pop-up blockers on the market I can't believe that IE hasn't incorporated that ability yet. I keep saying I'll download Opera at home to try it out - I should download it here at work and burn it to CD to save time (I have 56K connection at home).

Any version of Netscape I have ever used had me always asking myself the same question while browsing:

When will Netscape crash?

It wasn't a matter of if it would crash, because it was always inevitable. I'm strictly an IE guy, and could probably be swayed into trying a less main-stream browser if I ever run into serious problems with I.E. (I haven't in 5+ years).

For all of you who like the feel/features of Netscape, but can't stand all the AOL bloware, I recommend trying Mozilla's browser:

Mozilla is actually the open-source base for Netscape's browser, but it doesn't include all of the corporate bloat. In my experience it's just as fat as IE if not faster, and you get the tabs and pop-up killing (although you need to configure the pop-up stuff manually). I switched over because some component of IE started to crash regularly, and I didn't want to go through the headache of figuring out the problem.
