WBG Middleweight Title Fight
March 22nd, 1890
"The Nonpariel" Jack Dempsey (19-0-1 15KO)
vs.
Irish Jack Burke (30-7-1 19KO)

Background Info
Irish Jack Burke won the WBG Middleweight title on April 14th, 1882 defeating Jimmy Murray by TKO in the 15th round. In his 2nd defense of the title in January 1883, he lost a Unanimous Decision to Billy Baker. Also in 1883, he lost fights to George LaBlanche and Bob Turnball that hurt his ranking. He would go undefeated in 1884, winning a rematch with Bob Turnball and defeating Jimmy Murray again. After gaining the number 1 contender spot again, he beat Billy Baker by TKO in the 11th round to reclaim the middleweight title.

Burke's celebration was short, however, as he lost the title in his first defense by Split Decision to "The Nonpariel" Jack Dempsey. Burke remained active, and it cost him as he lost fights to George LaBlanche and Young Mitchell. And now, Irish Jack Burke has once again worked his way back up the rankings, going undefeated in 1889 defeating George LaBlanche and Billy Baker to gain what could be his last chance at the title.

Since winning the title from Burke, Dempsey has gone undefeated as champion. This will be his 5th title defense.
