1976 Week eight: Indy at Miami

Indy comes to town with an identical 3-4 record. We are 4 point favorites. The Jets travel to N.E. and Buffalo has a bye.
We open the game with an impressive drive but stall at the Indy 7 yard line. We take the 3-0 lead. Newton returns from injury with 28 yards on 4 carries on the drive.
We stop them on 3 plays and after a good PR we have the ball at the 50.
We drive to the 3 and stall again. We get 3 more. We need to punch these in the endzone.
Two sacks by our defense on the next drive stops them cold.
We drive from our 27 to the Indy 28 and miss a 45 yard FG. We still lead 6-0. Newton has 70 yards on 10 carries.
Our defense continues to shine as we force another punt. We start at our 6 but Newton bails us out with a 30 yard run. After a pass interference penalty gives us the ball in Indy's territory, we stall and have to punt.
Our defense finally caves and they drive for the TD and the lead just before halftime.

Our defense stayed in the locker room to start the 2nd half and let Indy just walk down the field. We did stop them at the one yard line. INDY hits the FG and now lead 10-6.
We follow with a drive and have a 1st and goal at the Indy 9. We stall at the one and get the FG to cut the lead to 10-9. That's 3 inside the 10 yard line and no TDs. That could come back to haunt us.
On a crazy play after a long KO return an Indy receiver catches a 10 yard pass. He fumbles and gets it back himself and goes 43 yards for a TD. They now lead 17-9. That just can't happen. We have to get those fumbles.
On another disappointing drive, we have a 1st and goal at the 5. A 15 yard sack stalls us and again we settle for a FG in the red zone. A 25 yard FG and we trail 17-12. The only bright spot is Newton is running all over them. He has 159 yards on 19 carries.
We couldn't stop a college team in the 2nd half. We are giving up huge passing yards and a TD by Indy has them leading 24-12 with 10 minutes to go in the game.
Two plays later and Sanders just about ends our chances in this one with an interception. Can't really blame him there as he needed to make something happen. Only Newton and our blockers showed up for this one.
Our final gasp is a drive deep with under a minute and it ends with another pick at the Indy 2 yard line. We lose 27-12.

What is alarming is the 3 drives inside the 10 that ended in FGs. And another inside the 20. If we punch those in the endzone, the game would be totally different.
We are at the midpoint in the season at 3-5 a game and a half out of the lead.
Our bye week is next and we should have everyone back at 100% except DT- Dobbins.
We are at the same record as last year through 8 games. We went on to lose 8 in a row. I think we are better than that this year.
Bright spots of the 1st half. Newton has over 800 yards and 5+ ypc. Sanders at QB has been decent. Our Defensive line is pretty good stopping the run.

After the bye week, Buffalo leads with a 4-3-1 record, N.E. is 4-4 we are 3-5 and the Jets are 2-6. We trail Buffalo by 1 1/2 games and lost to them twice. We trail the wild card by 2 games. Which is why I said we needed to go 2-1 or 3-0 before our bye. We went 1-2. We now go on the road for 4 straight basically looking to win out or at least 6-2 or 7-1.
Everyone is 100% except C-Mohr. He is still probable this week. We might be able to play without him. Dobbins is about 5 weeks away from returning.

Up Next:

We head to Houston after our bye week trying to start the 2nd half of the year on a good note.
