Steve Victory JOURNAL- Recruiting Update 2011-12

Victory’s savvy in the recruiting department may be the only thing that kept him at Alabama following his second three-win campaign in a row (that, and a lot of begging). The coach finally got a couple of blue-chip guys to sign on with the Tide. Both are power forwards (something ‘Bama needs desperately).

PF Brett Fischer is listed as the fourth-best player in the nation by both .400 Software and Hoops Galore. He inks with Alabama in week nine. Fischer grew up in Tuscaloosa and despite being ignored by the Tide early in the recruiting process tells coach Victory that he has “always dreamed of playing at Alabama.” For real? Fischer looks like a legit 5-star guy, too (31.3 ppg, 11.3 rpg, 85 % FT, 62 % FG).

“You’ll start next winter no doubt about it,” Victory tells Fischer (after kissing him on the forehead) on signing day.

The second stud is a pick out of Sheridan, Wyoming named Michael Bliss. He’s the 59th best recruit in the land according to .400. He pulled down an amazing 16.6 rpg and scored 24 ppg as a high school senior. What a combination these two guys can be if they fulfill expectations and stick around for four years.

Not wanting the post game to suffer like it had the past few seasons, Victory also gets yet another center, 7-1 Craig King. He scored 24 ppg and averaged 12 rpg at his South Carolina high school. The fourth recruit is SF Travis Williams (18 ppg), who probably won’t be as strong but could earn some PT later in his career.

For the first time in a few years, Victory sees some light at the end of the tunnel (and it doesn’t appear to be a train coming the other way)…
