When Barkeep originally suggested it, the first thing that popped to my mind was a mechanism similar to the crown a king game. After a while you can predictably estimate the total score expected for a team's "attack" you can also figure in their team attack bonus. If you end up with a team that for some reason ends up with some kind of penalty (like the one you would get from a bad guy being in the team sabotaging the team's effort), you can then perhaps narrow down where one bad guy might be.
he might have a different idea of where he is coming from though, but this is what popped into my head when he first said it.
