Background
Despite losing to #1 contender Young Mitchell in the middle of last year, Bob Fitzsimmons was granted a title shot by the champion Jack Dempsey, who had already defended his title against Mitchell in the middle of 1889. This will be Dempsey's 6th title defense since winning the belt in May of 1886 from Irish Jack Burke in a split decision.

Round 1: (6) Dempsey starts off strong but Fitzsimmons battles back in the last minute. (Round to Dempsey, 10-9 Dempsey)

Round 2: (5) Fitzsimmons dominated the round and had Dempsey hurt several times. Dempsey couldn't get anything going. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 19-19)

Round 3: (0) A slower round with Fitzsimmons getting the better of it. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 29-28 Fitzsimmons)

Round 4: (2) Fitzsimmons dominates another round. Dempsey is in real trouble here. Fitzsimmons is completely dictating the action and Dempsey can't get anything going. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 39-37 Fitzsimmons)

Round 5: (5) Fitzsimmons drops Dempsey to the canvas twice, with Dempsey being saved by the bell the second time. Dempsey is getting tired from the beating he's taking while Fitsimmons still has a full tank of gas. This one might not last much longer. (Round to Fitzsimmons 10-7, 49-44 Fitzsimmons)

Round 6: (2) Another round with the challenger dominating. (Round to Fitzsimmons, 59-53 Fitzsimmons)

Round 7: (2) Fitzsimmons again drops Dempsey to the canvas. He gets up to take another beating. Dempsey is exhausted. (Round to Fitzsimmons 10-8, 69-61 Fitzsimmons)

Round 8: (8) Dempsey goes down again. He was able to answer the count once again, only to get knocked back down to the canvas. On the count of 9, he was getting to his feet, but he just couldn't beat the count.
